Demetrice Martin is leaving his alma mater for UCLA

New Michigan State football head coach Jonathan Smith poached former Spartan Demetrice Martin to be the team’s cornerbacks coach from Oregon. Now, Martin is being poached back to the west coast.

According to a report from On3’s Jim Comparoni Martin is taking the position as a defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator at UCLA, leaving his alma mater for another Big Ten school.

Now the Spartans will be faced with the task of replacing Martin on the staff, whether it be another defensive backs or something else on the staff, Smith will need to find a replacement, and quick.

Michigan State went under a major overhaul, obviously, when they hired Jonathan Smith to take over the Spartan football program. With the new changes to the Spartan football program, came a full overhaul within the MSU coaching staff.

While we know what the new staff looks like, it is time to look at the old staff, and where members of the old staff ended up in their new coaching positions.

Michigan State basketball assistant coach Mark Montgomery to be hired by Detroit Mercy

MSU assistant Mark Montgomery will be the next head coach at Detroit Mercy

Michigan State head basketball coach Tom Izzo is reportedly losing a member of his staff. Mark Montgomery has reportedly been tabbed as the new head coach of the University of Detroit Mercy.

This will be Montgomery’s second head coaching job, having led Northern Illinois’s basketball program from 2011-2021. Montgomery has also served two long stints as an assistant with Izzo, from 2002-2011 and now 2021-2024.

Izzo will now be tasked with replacing Montgomery on his bench next season.

Former Michigan State football DB coach gets defensive coordinator job

A former MSU DB coach has accepted a defensive coordinator position at Louisiana

Jim Salgado was a member of the Michigan State coaching staff during the 2023 football season, coming in as a cornerback’s coach. Previous to MSU, Salgado was a longtime assistant with the Buffalo Bills. Salgado joined the Washington Commanders staff following MSU’s season last year.

Now, according to a report from ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Salgado is being hired as the new defensive coordinator at the University of Louisiana.

Michigan State football officially retains Courtney Hawkins as WR coach

Courtney Hawkins is being retained as MSU’s WR coach.

Michigan State has officially announced that Courtney Hawkins will be retained onto Jonathan Smith’s staff as the team’s wide receiver coach. Hawkins has been Michigan State’s wide receiver coach since 2020, prior to that, Hawkins was the head coach of Flint Beecher High School from 2006-2019.

Hawkins, a former Spartan player in his own right, has produced two NFL draft picks and has been a solid recruiter during his four years with the program.

Utah State hires away Michigan State football RB assistant coach

Utah State has hired an MSU offensive assistant to their staff

Rodney Freeman has spent his one year in East Lansing serving as the assistant running backs coach, working under the Spartans RB coach Effrem Reed. Freeman was rewarded for his work at Michigan State, receiving a promotion and the ability to run his own RB room, getting the running backs coach job at Utah State.

Report: Michigan State football parting ways with GM Saeed Khalif

According to reports, there is going to be a shakeup to Michigan State’s coaching staff

Mel Tucker has made a pretty big move to his coaching staff. It appears  Saeed Khalif was let go by Tucker. Khalif has been the main source of recruiting for the Michigan State coaching staff during his tenure in East Lansing.

Corey Robinson of 247Sports reported the move and that Tucker plans to conduct a national search to find his replacement.

Michigan State football hires new assistant WR coach

A new coach will be joining Michigan State’s offensive staff:

Michigan State has enhanced its coaching staff on the offensive side of the football, adding a new coach to the support staff. Tino Smith will be joining the Spartans coaching staff as the new assistant wide receivers coach.

Smith previously held a coaching role at Albion College since 2018, serving as the wide receivers coach before being promoted to the recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach positions.

Smith played his college football at Savannah State University as a quarterback and wide receiver.

Michigan State football: Mel Tucker is “very confident” in MSU’s staff

It appears Mel Tucker is fully confident in his staff at MSU amid tough stretch

Fans took to social media to voice there displeasure with Michigan State following the team’s 34-7 loss to Minnesota. A lot of that disstain was put towards Michigan State’s coaching staff, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Spartans not only seem to have not progressed at all, but it appears that the team has regressed from last year to this year on the defensive side of the ball, much to the disgust of the fans.

In his post game press conference, Mel Tucker was asked about his staff and he doubled down on his confidence in his staff.

Former Michigan State football assistant Ron Burton lands new job

Former MSU DL coach Ron Burton has found a new coaching home

Ron Burton has been a staple of the Michigan State defense for many years. Burton was hired to East Lansing by former coach Mark Dantonio in 2013, and Burton has served as a defensive line or defensive tackles coach ever since. When the coaching change was made from Dantonio to Tucker, it was rumored that Indiana was poaching the longtime Spartan coach, but Tucker managed to keep Burton in East Lansing.

Following the 2021 season, Tucker and Burton had made the decision to part ways. Burton was loved by many players and fans, but it ultimately was time to move on.

Burton has found a new home, being hired in as the new defensive line coach at Miami University in Ohio of the Mid-American Conference.
