Michigan State (13-3, 5-0) enters this matchup with eight straight wins, the most recent of which came over Minnesota. The 74-58 win saw Cassius Winston lead the Spartans with 27 points, as Michigan State pulled away in the second half after entering halftime up only six. Winston is averaging 19.4 points per game for the season. He’ll be Purdue’s top priority on defense when the teams meet.

Meanwhile, Purdue dropped its second straight game its last time out. The Boilermakers lost at Michigan in double overtime, dropping a dramatic 84-78 affair. Trevion Williams scores 36 points in the losing effort, with Purdue falling to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in conference action. After such a grueling game earlier in the week, Matt Painter’s team will need to rebound quickly against another tough opponent.

Both Purdue and Michigan State typically find themselves at the top of the Big Ten standings, but Purdue’s struggles have kept them from those heights this season. The Boilermakers will need to play with a sense of urgency before it is too late in the season to climb the conference standings.

The big key for Michigan State in this game is Cassius Winston. He was instrumental in the Spartans sweeping the two regular-season games against the Wolverines and the Big Ten tournament title game last season. He averaged 21.3 points and 8.7 assists. He’s putting up those same kinds of numbers this season, with team-highs of 17.8 points and 6.1 assists per game.  Winston had 21 points and six assists Thursday night when Michigan State cruised to a 76-56 victory over Illinois. Xavier Tillman has also been a standout player to begin the season. Against Illinois, he had 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four blocked shots. The 6-foot-7 junior has 10 blocks in his last three games and is shooting 56.7 percent on the season.

Michigan (10-2, 1-1) had two easy wins against overmatched opponents in Presbyterian and UMass Lowell, combining to outscore them 172-104. Before that, the Wolverines faced four of five ranked opponents, splitting the games. The Wolverines cruised to an 86-60 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday when Jon Teske scored a career-high 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting.

The 7-foot-1 Teske is averaging a team-high 14.4 points, while shooting 57.7 percent. He is one of four players scoring in double figures for Michigan, including Isaiah Livers (13.4), Eli Brooks (11.5) and Zavier Simpson (11.2).

The No. 14 Spartans (10-3, 2-0) are coming off of a 95-62 trouncing of Western Michigan on Sunday in which four different players scored in double digits and the team went on a 25-0 first-half run. Forward Xavier Tillman picked up a double-double, tallying 15 points on 11 rebounds. Foster Loyer also had 16 points. MSU shot 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the field and out-rebounded Western Michigan 46-24. The Spartans are still dealing with an injury to star point guard Cassius Winston, who didn’t play due to a bruised knee. Head coach Tom Izzo said the injury is nothing structural.

As for Illinois (9-4, 1-1), the team demolished North Carolina A&T 95-64 on Sunday behind 26 points and nine rebounds from center Kofi Cockburn in just 28 minutes and 19 points from Ayo Dosunmu. The team had four players score in double figures. In just 13 games this season, Cockburn now has four 20-point games and three games with 20+ points and 9+ rebounds. If the Illini have any chance of beating the Spartans, Cockburn has to put up the same kind of numbers.

10 for 20: Michigan State basketball

Michigan State basketball in the 2020s

The end of our series on the 13 non-Wisconsin Big Ten basketball programs at the start of the 2020s features the Michigan State Spartans. If one is to ask, “What is the biggest question facing the Spartans in the 2020s?”, it’s not about the success. That is assumed. It’s not about the consistency. That box has been checked. It’s not about the ability to play well in March. Michigan State has proved it can, in contrast to Purdue and Maryland, among others in the conference.

The main question is about the man responsible for Michigan State being so terrifically successful: “Will Tom Izzo coach through the entirety of the coming decade?” That’s the whole ballgame at Michigan State, is it not?

Yes, Tom Izzo was a Jud Heathcote assistant who was promoted from within two decades ago. Michigan State, as it turns out, didn’t need a national search or a splash hire to maintain and then improve upon Jud’s prosperous tenure in East Lansing. Izzo was not only sufficient, he was transcendent. He took what was a very good program and made it a monster.

The most amazing fact about Michigan State basketball under Tom Izzo is that only ONE senior class — 2014 — has failed to make a Final Four under his coaching. With Final Fours in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2019, you can see that the only gap of more than four years was 2010 to 2015. The 2014 class made the Elite Eight. That’s ridiculous.

The right question for the 2020s is not if Izzo can sustain. That’s what he does. The right question for the coming decade is not if Izzo can stay relevant or adaptable. That’s what he is. The only question is if Izzo will tire of the chase, of the continued pursuit of greatness and a second national championship. Tom Izzo’s hunger is a central storyline in the 2020s Big Ten. Only if Izzo steps down before 2030 will his successor become a huge question. We’ll see if we even get to that point before the decade ends.

Game Recap: MSU Basketball defeats UCLA 75-62

Michigan State Basketball defeats the UCLA Bruins 75-62 in their final Maui Jim Maui Invitational game. Here is a quick game recap.

Maui wowie, what a game! Michigan State defeates UCLA 75-62 in their final Maui Jim Maui Invitational game. The Spartans pulled away late in the second half. No question that MSU did not meet fan expectations in this particular game and the tournament as a whole.

Here is a quick game recap:

First Half

Michigan State really struggled early on, mostly due to UCLA’s defense. The Bruins played tough defense against the Spartans around the rim. MSU players had extreme difficulty getting into the paint. On the bright side, Marcus Bingham had two stern blocks at the start of the game.

The Bruins held the Spartans captive in terms of pace. UCLA used up all of the shot clock on nearly each and every possession. Furthermore, they focused on transition defense, allowing no easy baskets. MSU struggled at first against this defensive strategy but got back on pace with time. Eventually, the Spartans found their rhythm.

Late in the half, MSU went on a beautiful 10-2 run. Cassius Winston got loose in transition for an off-balance three. He later hit another three to bring it to 24-20. Unfortunately, Michigan State lost a shooter in the corner. On the next play though, Winston got a nice layup off a second chance opportunity.

At the end of the first half, MSU led UCLA 26-23.

Second Half

Tom Izzo changed the starting lineup to start the second half, replacing Aaron Henry with Gabe Brown. Almost immediately, Marcus Bingham blocked his third shot at the rim. On the other end, Gabe Brown is wide open in the corner and wets a three. Then, Rocket Watts played tough defense to force a UCLA shot clock violation. On the next offensive possession, Brown hit yet another three and gave MSU a 36-25 lead.

Michigan State failed to take advantage of UCLA switches but that did not matter. The refs continued to make poor call after poor call but that did not matter. The Spartans were on a mission. Rocket Watts drove to the rim, absorbed contact, and hit the shot.

Winston hit his third three of the game to give MSU a 41-30 lead. Then, Malik Hall had a wonderful couple of possessions. Hall drew a foul for free throws, hit a turnaround elbow jumper, and then drew yet another foul for more free throws on three consecutive possessions.

Rocket Watts hit a smooth step-back and-one shot. With 10 minutes left in the game, MSU pulls away and Winston shows out. Aaron Henry, who was hounded by Izzo all game long, drove and kicked the ball to Tillman for a bucket. UCLA did not give up though, instead they clawed back to single digits, MSU led 61-52.

Malik Hall fouled out of the game with less than five minutes left in the game. I don’t blame Hall though. The refs called fouls on him for simply standing in front of defenders. Finally, Xavier Tillman woke up. Tillman had a humungous block at one end then a nice dunk on the other end.

UCLA was still within striking distance down nine points to MSU. Winston found Tillman for an easy bucket at the rim. Then, Rocket Watts closed out the game for the Spartans. Watts hit an ice-cold three-point shot in transition to put Michigan State out of striking distance. Again, what a game.

Check out some highlights below:

I’m sure there are critical fans out there but please relax. Remember, it’s just November. Tom Izzo is playing a lot of young guys. It will take time for them to get in the full swing of things. For example, Rocket Watts just put up a career-high 12 points. I imagine his numbers continue to trend upwards.

Spartan’s Basketball is back in action against Duke on Dec. 3 at 9:30 P.M. Michigan State will retire Draymond Green’s jersey at this game. Be sure to tune into ESPN to cheer on the Spartans.

Michigan State PG Cassius Winston ranked as first-round NBA draft pick by ESPN

Michigan State star point guard Cassius Winston has been ranked the 30th best player in the 2020 NBA draft pool by ESPN.

Michigan State Men’s Basketball has slowly become a factory for producing NBA talent and this year looks like it will be quite fruitful when it comes to Spartans heading into the draft. Some publications have Aaron Henry going in the first round, others have Xavier Tillman floating around that area. The ranking I find most compelling, however, is ESPN, who has point guard Cassius Winston ranked No. 30 in their NBA Draft rankings.

Winston is the No. 9 ranked point guard in this year’s draft, per rankings made primarily by Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz of ESPN. This is pretty gratifying to see since I am just one of many Spartan fans who have seen Winston play enough to be confident in his abilities at the next level, it’s good to see others in the media acknowledging that his skills could translate.
