Purdue runs flea-flicker throwback screen touchdown to shock Michigan State

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm has amazed Michigan State with his creativity, and one trick screen touchdown from Aidan O’Connell to Jackson Anthrop proved the theory.

It wasn’t quite Big Ten After Dark given the time of day, but the Purdue Boilermakers absolutely shocked the third-ranked Michigan State Spartans on this amazing flea-flicker throwback screen touchdown pass from quarterback Aidan O’Connell to halfback Jackson Anthrop. The touchdown put Purdue up 21-7 in what would be a major upset, and though Sparty came back with a touchdown drive to make it 21-14 near the end of the first half, this play was something else.

O’Connell took the snap with 5:06 left in the second quarter, pitched the ball to Anthrop, who pitched it to receiver Milton Wright, who gave it back to O’Connell. All that matriculation allowed Anthrop to get out to the left side of the field for the throwback screen, and as you can see below, Anthrop had his entire offensive line blocking the screen for him.

You don’t see that every day.

Michigan State’s defense struggled in the first half to keep up with Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm’s creativity, and this was the most obvious example. We’ll see if the Boilermakers can keep the upset going through the second half.

Michigan State (13-3, 5-0) enters this matchup with eight straight wins, the most recent of which came over Minnesota. The 74-58 win saw Cassius Winston lead the Spartans with 27 points, as Michigan State pulled away in the second half after entering halftime up only six. Winston is averaging 19.4 points per game for the season. He’ll be Purdue’s top priority on defense when the teams meet.

Meanwhile, Purdue dropped its second straight game its last time out. The Boilermakers lost at Michigan in double overtime, dropping a dramatic 84-78 affair. Trevion Williams scores 36 points in the losing effort, with Purdue falling to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in conference action. After such a grueling game earlier in the week, Matt Painter’s team will need to rebound quickly against another tough opponent.

Both Purdue and Michigan State typically find themselves at the top of the Big Ten standings, but Purdue’s struggles have kept them from those heights this season. The Boilermakers will need to play with a sense of urgency before it is too late in the season to climb the conference standings.
