Big Ten update: Michigan State, Maryland wins set up huge showdown

Michigan State and Maryland meet Saturday

It was a dramatic night in Big Ten basketball on Tuesday. While many Americans were focusing on numerical totals in New Hampshire, Maryland and Michigan State scored narrow wins on the hardwood. The Terrapins beat Nebraska by two, and Michigan State defeated Illinois by one on the road. These two results put Maryland at the top of the Big Ten, with Penn State in second and Michigan State close behind in third.

Guess which two teams meet this Saturday in East Lansing? Yup. The Terps and Spartans will duel for positioning in the top tier of the Big Ten with Penn State, as the race for the regular-season championship heads for the home stretch.

The Illinois run is over… not just because the Illini have lost consecutive home games, but because star Ayo Dosunmu got injured. He is certain to miss some time. How much is less certain. Nevertheless, that’s enough to write off Illinois for the Big Ten title. The Illini are still likely to make the NCAA Tournament, but the conference race is now very different.

What adds to the drama surrounding Michigan State and Maryland is that this upcoming Saturday’s game in East Lansing is merely the first of two between the schools in the next month. The reunion in College Park will be on Saturday, Feb. 29 (yes, this is a leap year!).

Penn State owns victories over both Maryland and Michigan State, so the Nittany Lions would probably prefer a split in these two upcoming games between the Terps and Spartans. Penn State is the foremost remaining example of a non-traditional Big Ten basketball school having a chance to win the regular season league title and shock the nation. Rutgers fell off the pace due to its inability to win road games in the conference. Yet, for all the talk (warranted, but possibly overplayed) about the Big Ten being turned upside-down this season, the final weeks of conference play will be largely defined by two schools with significant basketball histories and traditions: Maryland and Michigan State.

Tuesday’s results were merely a prelude for Saturday’s huge game and the other showdowns still to come in the conference’s regular-season schedule.

Michigan State Basketball bounces back, wins 70-69 thriller over Illinois

Michigan State led big most of the way against Illinois, nearly let it slip away at the end, but pulled out the win on the road.

After three straight losses to Big Ten rivals, Michigan State Basketball was able to avoid their first four-game losing streak since 2007 with a 70-69 win over Illinois. This was a huge road win for a Michigan State program that was in desperate need of some positive momentum.

Your leading scorer for the Spartans? It was obviously their tantalizing, uber-talented guard: Rocket Watts. Yep, Rocket Watts led the way tonight with 21 points and was a huge reason the Spartans led for most of this game.

Michigan State led by as much as 20 points in their game against Illinois, but to their credit, the Fighting Illinois, well, fought back. With 5 minutes and 28 seconds left in the game, the Illinois Basketball team took their first lead in the game.

With 19 seconds left, Kofi Cockburn went to the line and knocked down both free throws to put Illinois up 69-68. Naturally, Michigan State went to their leader Cassius Winston. Cassius broke to the rim, drew the defense, and put up an errant layup that Xavier Tillman was able to slam home to put Michigan State up by one.

Ayo Dosunmu, who had 17 points, 1 assist, and 9 rebounds, took the ball down for Illinois but lost his balance and slipped. Aaron Henry picked up the ball and chucked it down the court, sealing the game.

Cassius Winston had 12 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in what was a statistically tame night for him. Xavier Tillman had 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with 3 assists. Aaron Henry, to his credit, added 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 much-appreciated three-pointers.

In the latest edition of “FORWARD WATCH”, Marcus Bingham Jr. got the start instead of Gabe Brown or Malik Hall, but Brown ended up playing 11 more minutes than Bingham.

Michigan State vs. Illinois basketball round two statistical preview

No. 25 Michigan State hits the road to take on No. 22 Illinois.

[jwplayer EBPdXA3C-PROpJzTY]

No. 25 Michigan State is reeling, having lost three straight games and five of their last eight. The Spartans will be looking for a better road result as they travel to take on No. 22 Illinois in Champaign Tuesday night (9:00 ESPN). Michigan State is 1-4 in their last five road conference games, with the lone victory coming against Minnesota.

Let’s take a look at how these two teams match up from a statistical standpoint and where edges can perhaps be gleaned.

Advanced stats and ranks courtesy kenpom.com.

Overview

Michigan State: 16-8 overall, 8-5 Big Ten

-No. 10 in adjusted efficiency

-No. 19 in adjusted offense

-No. 17 in adjusted defense

-No. 101 in adjusted tempo

Illinois: 16-7 overall, 8-4 Big Ten

-No. 27 in adjusted efficiency

-No. 41 in adjusted offense

-No. 25 in adjusted defense

-No. 250 in adjusted tempo

This will be a matchup of two desperate teams. After being tied for the Big Ten lead just two weeks ago, Michigan State and Illinois have lost a combined five straight games. The Illii lost on the road against Iowa and dropped a massive contest at home to Maryland, which vaulted the Terps into the top spot in the Big Ten. If either team wants to keep their shot at the Big Ten alive, this is a must win. Illinois can’t afford to go two games back to Maryland and Michigan State with both of those teams holding tiebreakers over them. Michigan State can’t afford to lose another conference game if they want to crawl their way back into the regular season race. It should be a good game in an absolutely electric environment.

Let’s dive into some specifics.

A note: Four factors is something you will see in these posts a lot. They are four statistical categories that heavily dictate good basketball vs. bad basketball. They are: effective field goal %, turnover %, offensive rebounding %, free throw rate (FTA/FGA). If a team is good at these four things, they are good at basketball.

When Michigan State has the ball

Michigan State Offense four factors: No. 82 in eFG% (effective field goal), No. 94 in turnover %, No. 35 in Oreb%, No. 192 in free throw rate

Illinois defense four factors: No. 55 eFG% against, No. 300 in turnover %, No. 51 in Oreb%, No. 18 in FTR

For the first time all season the Michigan State defense is ranked higher than the Michigan State offense in KenPom. The Spartan offense has been an absolute nightmare on the road, especially in the early part of games. Maybe they figured something out in the second half against Michigan? After scoring only 23 points in the first half, the Spartans scored 45 in the second half. We’ll see. The shooting numbers are certainly troubling as they’ve been in decline for a while and Illinois does a pretty good job in that spot defensively. MSU’s turnover issues plagued them early last week, but they cleaned that up after the first ten minutes against Michigan. They’ll absolutely have to protect the ball, especially considering Illinois does not force turnovers at a high rate. An underrated factor to MSU’s offensive decline has been the plummeting of their free throw rate and with Illinois being one of the best teams in the country at preventing opponents from getting to the line, it’s hard to imagine that changing in this game.

When Illinois has the ball

Illinois offensive four factors: No. 199 in eFG%, No. 148 in turnover %, No. 7 in Oreb%, No. 160 in FTR

Michigan State defensive four factors: No. 3 in eFG% against, No. 325 in turnover %, No. 61 in Oreb% against, No. 91 in FTR

One of these thiiiiings is not like the others.

Illinois is middling at three of the four factors on offense, but, as you can see, they are one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country. They attack the glass as a team and have one of the best rebounders in the country in Kofi Cockburn. The Michigan State defense is going to do what it always does; play sound man defense and force tough shots that will lead to a lot of rebounds. If Michigan State wants to win Tuesday night, they absolutely cannot get crushed on the glass. It is, by far, Illinois’ biggest strength on offense. Michigan State is capable of having very good rebounding games, but the bigs are going to have to bring it and the guards are going to have to contribute as well. It has to be the number one concern going into this game for Michigan State.

Other key numbers

We always like to look at three-point shooting here and Illinois is quite bad at that. As a team they are 296th in the country in three-point percentage and 324th in 3PA/FGA. In short, they don’t take a ton of threes and they don’t make a ton of threes.

Trent Frazier is their best shooter by volume, shooting 36% on just fewer than five attempts per game. Alan Griffin is also coming on as a shooter. He shoots 39%, but on less consistent volume. Still, he’s liable to take seven threes and make four of them.

Illinois ranks 213th on assists per field goal made. I’d guess a lot of that comes from their offensive rebounding. They get a lot of buckets on putbacks. Outside of that, their highest usage player Ayo Dosunmu plays a fair amount of isolation ball.

Despite Dosunmu’s high volume (he takes 27% of the shots when he’s on the floor) he’s not a very good shooter. His effective field goal percentage is only 50.2% and he struggles from beyond the arc. Where he can be really effective is at the free throw line where he shoots 81%. He doesn’t get there too often–which I think is the best critique of his game–but he certainly has the talent to do it in a given night. Keeping him off the line and forcing tough jumpers will be key.

Illinois is pretty good at limiting opponents’ attempts from three. They rank 57th in that category. I like to look at attempts forced rather than percentages made when evaluating a team’s three-point defense. Sometimes teams get hot and make shots, but a truly good three-point defense limits the amount of threes their opponent takes. Deep shots may be tough to come by for the Spartans.

Conclusion

Illinois is a really good team and it’s hard to win in their building. Add in to that Michigan State’s massive road struggles and this one looks to be an uphill grind for the Spartans. They’re going to have to protect the ball and limit Illinois’ second-chance opportunities. The more they can force the Illini to shoot contested jumpers, the better this will go. This is a huge spot for both teams, which I have highlighted plenty, so I expect a really competitive game. Vegas likes MSU by one point in this one, which I’m sure feels bold for many Spartan fans. KenPom has this one as a 70-69 win for Illinois, at a 51% chance of victory.

Michigan State Basketball a narrow favorite over Illinois on the road

Michigan State is currently listed at -1.5 against Illinois in Champaign according to BetMGM.

Michigan State Basketball is in Champaign, Illinois on Tuesday for another Big Ten match-up, this time against an Illinois team that is ahead of the Spartans in the Big Ten standings but is facing a losing streak of its own. MSU has lost its last three games while Illinois has lost two straight. Despite sporting the longer losing streak, Michigan State will be favored, although just by a hair at -1.5, against Illinois on the road.

Odds via BetMGM. Access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated 2/11/20 at 1:30 a.m. ET.

MSU easily handled Illinois in their last match-up back in January 76-56, but that was back at home in the Breslin Center. I was expecting Illinois to be favored in this one, but I guess oddsmakers aren’t ready to give up on Tom Izzo and the Spartans just yet.

Illinois will host MSU Tuesday night at 9pm ET.

Draymond Green named a finalist for 2020 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Roster

Michigan State alumnus Draymond Green will try to win his second Olympic medal in Tokyo, Japan and was named a finalist for the roster.

Former Michigan State Basketball star, Golden State Warriors forward, and three-time NBA champion Draymond Green has been named as a finalist for the 2020 United States Olympic Men’s Basketball Roster. Green was part of the 2016 team who won the Gold medal in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The team is being led by Lebron James, who has three medals in his own right (2 Gold, 1 Bronze).

The final roster, who will have the honor of representing the United States in the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, will have 12 players, so it’s not a lock that Green will be on the team. However, as a past medal-winner, I would have to think he ends up in Tokyo.

The team will be helmed by San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

“I’m looking forward to coaching the U.S. Olympic Team, and I’m excited about the potential and possibilities this team has,” said Popovich.  “Anyone who follows international basketball knows there are many really good players from all around the world, and therefore there are many excellent national teams. International basketball has improved so much from the days of the Dream Team. The Olympics in 2020 will be a true competition, and there are many teams that will have a legitimate shot at capturing gold.”

Michigan State Basketball vs. Illinois: 5 Most Important Players

Michigan State Basketball plays against Illinois this Tuesday in another Big Ten road game. Here are the 5 most important players.

Michigan State Basketball travels to the State Farm Center for a game against Illinois. The Fighting Illini are 3-2 in their last five games whereas MSU is 2-3 in their last five games. Another tough away game environment for the Spartans in this matchup.

Here are the five most important players in this game:

1. Aaron Henry

Aaron Henry sits atop my list of the five most important MSU players yet again. Henry did score in double digits against Michigan but he still struggles on the floor. The Sophomore Forward can still improve over the next month but the window of opportunity grows smaller and smaller with each game. Aaron Henry is the most important Spartan in this game against Illinois.

2. Gabe Brown

Gabe Brown failed to score against Michigan this past Saturday, shooting 0/5 from the floor. Keep in mind, MSU only lost by nine points against their interstate rival. So even just ten points from Gabe Brown swings this game in Michigan State’s favor. Watch for Brown to have an explosive bounce-back game against Illinois.

3. Xavier Tillman

Xavier Tillman put up a sneaky 17 points and 12 rebounds against Michigan. I think Tillman should be more aggressive as a scorer. Sometimes, he gets the ball down low and looks to pass to a perimeter teammate. Instead, Tillman should put his body against the defender and score or draw contact. He is a reliable source of high-quality shots more often than not.

4. Rocket Watts

Rocket Watts had a quiet game against the Wolverines with seven points off the bench. Watts gives Michigan State a great scoring spark when Cassius Winston rests on the bench. More importantly, he allows Winston to play off-ball when paired together in the backcourt. Rocket Watts scoring ability is critical for Michigan State’s success during the final stretch of the season.

5. Kyle Ahrens

Kyle Ahrens is the furthest thing from a flashy player. Instead, he is a grit and grind type of guy. Ahrens’ energy and hustle are inspirational. Plus, he can hit three-point shots when open. Kyle can easily swing an MSU game with three or four shots from beyond the arc. As a result, I think he is pretty important in this intense road game situation.

Michigan State and Illinois play at 9 P.M. this Tuesday on ESPN. Cheer on the Spartans and stay with us on SpartansWire for more coverage to come.

Michigan State Basketball drops out of AP Poll Top-25 for first time this season

Michigan State Men’s Basketball has fallen out of the AP Poll for the first time this season after starting the year at No. 1.

Sigh. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. After starting the season as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country Michigan State Men’s Basketball has officially fallen out of the AP Poll top-25 after recent losses to Michigan, Penn State, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

According to Kyle Austin of MLive, this is just the second time in NCAA history (with the last time coming in 1968) that the preseason No. 1 team has fallen out of the AP Poll top-25.

While they did not quite make the cut, they still received the most votes of any team that was not included in the top-25. The Spartans received 124 votes in total.

I personally think this is a little bit of a dramatic overreaction by the poll, and MSU is still in the top-25 of the Coaches Poll. Michigan State will immediately get back into that top-25 zone if they can knock off Illinois on the road tomorrow in a huge Big Ten match-up.

Michigan State drops to No. 25 in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

MSU holds on to the last spot in the rankings after 0-2 week.

The Spartans are still ranked. Barely.

After losing games to Penn State and Michigan last week, the Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball team has fallen to the bottom of the USA TODAY Coaches Poll top 25. In total the Spartans have lost three straight and are 3-5 in their last eight games.

It’s an 11-point plummet for MSU, by far the steepest of any still-ranked team. Michigan State is one of two teams with eight losses in the ranking. The other is No. 24 Texas Tech.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Maryland still leads the way holding at No. 9. The Terps are followed by Penn State (13), Iowa (17) and Illinois (23). Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers and Michigan all received votes.

Michigan State travels to Champagne to take on the No. 23 Illini Tuesday night (9:00 ESPN).

Michigan State basketball to wear 2000-style throwback uniforms against Maryland

Finally something to celebrate!

Things haven’t been going well for Michigan State basketball of late. Maybe a uniform can change that?

MSU has announced, through a neat Twitter video, that the team will be throwing it back to the Flintstones era with new alternate uniforms modeled after the threads the 2000 national championship team made so famous. Check it out.

The jersey reveal couldn’t have come at a better time with Michigan State’s two biggest athletic programs in bad places. The basketball team has lost three straight and is struggling to get its confidence going and the football team has been a disaster for a few years now.

Maybe all we need to restore everything is a little throwback magic courtesy of some new uniforms.
