Comparing USC’s 2024 Big Ten football schedule to the Michigan Wolverines

We will play @WolverinesWire in the L.A. Coliseum. See how #USC’s and #Michigan’s 2024 #B1G schedules compare.

USC and Michigan will soon be conference competitors. When USC moves to the Big Ten, it will be a completely different ballgame for the Trojans and Wolverines. Let’s compare USC’s and Michigan’s schedules, shall we?

Isaiah Hole and his team at Wolverines Wire now know which Big Ten teams they will face. They also know when they will play USC and UCLA for the first time in a Big Ten Conference game.

“We now know who Michigan football will play and there are some interesting matchups when it comes to the conference schedule. Per usual, the Wolverines will play nine conference games, including rivals Michigan State and Ohio State. The maize and blue will also face both USC and UCLA in year one of the new-look conference, though they will play neither the following year,” Hole wrote.

In 2024, Michigan plays these nine Big Ten teams: Ohio State, Illinois, Rutgers, UCLA, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State, Maryland, and USC.

In 2024, USC plays these nine Big Ten teams: Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, UCLA, Purdue, Penn State, Northwestern, Maryland, and Michigan.

Michigan’s unique 2024 opponents: Ohio State, Rutgers, Minnesota, and Michigan State.

USC’s unique 2024 opponents: Iowa, Purdue, Penn State, Northwestern.

Michigan and USC common 2024 opponents: Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland, UCLA, and each other.

All in all, neither team has a huge schedule advantage, but the one notable advantage USC has in 2024 is that it doesn’t play Ohio State. Michigan does.

Michigan Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wolverines miss from the Big Ten West Division?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, going to Iowa is never easy for anyone in the midst of the season, and yeah, yeah, yeah, Nebraska should be better – it gave the Wolverines a fight last year – and Illinois should be a tough out, but missing Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin is big break. They also miss Northwestern from the West.

The Ohio State game is in Columbus, but in division play, Michigan State has to come down the road and Penn State is a home game. Both are sandwiched around a well-time late October week off.

Michigan Football Schedule What To Know: If it seems like Michigan is never on the road, there’s a reason

It’s not.

The first four games of the year are in Ann Arbor, giving everyone time to get back up to speed before a two game road stretch at Iowa and Indiana.

The only other road game before the regular season finale against Ohio State is at Rutgers. That’s coming off the Penn State and Michigan State game, but … it’s Rutgers.

That means Michigan has just one road game from October 8th through November 26th.

Michigan Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

While other Big Ten teams have to gear up for Notre Dame (Ohio State), Oklahoma (Nebraska), Virginia (Illinois), Washington State (Wisconsin), Washington (Michigan State), Auburn (Penn State), and Colorado (Minnesota) in non-conference play, Michigan gets … Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn.

The general fair rule of thumb is that every Power Five team should play at least one other Power Five non-conference team – this isn’t right, but it’ll certainly be a huge help.

As long as the Wolverines can take care of home against Penn State and Michigan State, anything less than 10-1 before going to Ohio State won’t be okay.

Michigan rolls to a 38-17 win as Wisconsin’s offense sputters again

The Badgers fall to 1-3 as Michigan controls the second half

It was only for the briefest of moments, but Wisconsin’s offense finally woke up late in the first half of their 38-17 loss to Michigan. Graham Mertz connected on a pair of long throws to Chimere Dike, the second of which resulted in the Badger QB’s most impressive touchdown since his first career start. Wisconsin had suddenly pulled to within 13-10 just before half with momentum firmly on their side.

Then the second half began. In a similar script to the Notre Dame game, the Badgers fell apart late as Michigan rolled to victory. This time it wasn’t Mertz’s play, but a Mertz injury on the first drive of the second half that changed the complexion of things at Camp Randall. On third down of their first second half series, the Badger QB took a shot to the ribs on a play where TE Jake Ferguson also exited with an injury. Neither would return.

Early on, it was more of the same on both sides of the football for the Badgers. Michigan and Wisconsin traded a series of punts before Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines dialed up some trickery. Michigan opened the scoring on a flea flicker from QB Cade McNamara to WR Cornelius Johnson late in the first quarter.

A Wisconsin special teams miscue handed Michigan three points as Jim Leonhard’s defense held strong in the red zone, and late in the first half the Badger offense found their rhythm. After not completing a pass throughout the entire first quarter, Mertz completed five straight passes to set up a field goal late in the second quarter.

After Wisconsin pulled to 10-3 and the Wolverines responded with a quick field goal drive, the Badgers had just over 40 seconds to go the length of the field. Mertz completed arguably the two best passes of his career, both of which went to Dike, to get Wisconsin within 3 points before half.

Wisconsin had the football coming out of halftime, but the Badgers went three and out as the offensive line struggled to protect Mertz. The final play of the drive resulted in an incompletion and Mertz taking a massive hit to the ribs. The Badger QB would not return and Michigan would control things from there.

With backup QB Chase Wolf in for the Badgers, Wisconsin’s offense failed to move the football aside from a late touchdown throw to Clay Cundiff with the game already decided. Michigan took advantage of two Wolf turnovers as the Wolverines scored 25 unanswered points to open the second half.

Wisconsin fell to 1-3 on the year and remain winless in the Big Ten (0-2). Michigan improved to 5-0, and currently sit at 2-0 in the Big Ten.

The Big Ten announces the Wisconsin vs. Michigan start time

The Wisconsin-Michigan start time was announced earlier today:

Wisconsin football will officially be in the new version of the primetime slot for back-to-back weeks.

On Monday morning, the Big Ten announced that Wisconsin and Michigan will square off at 11 a.m. CT as part of Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” series, which has become the slot for the weekend’s biggest matchup. This marks the second straight week where the Badgers play at 11 a.m. CT on Fox.

Wisconsin will either be coming off of their biggest win of the young season or be sitting at 1-2 following their matchup with Notre Dame this Saturday. If Michigan takes care of business against Rutgers on Saturday, the Wolverines would enter at 4-0.

Along with announcing the Badgers-Wolverines start time, the Big Ten released the schedule for every Week 5 matchup via Twitter:

Michigan Football Schedule Ranking

12. Northern Illinois, Sept. 18

It comes one week after dealing with Washington and should be the warm-up for the Big Ten opener against Rutgers.

11. Western Michigan, Sept. 4

The Broncos are dangerous, but the season-opener – and the first of two games against MAC teams – has to be a must-win … or else.

10. Rutgers, Sept. 25

The Wolverines kickoff Big Ten play at the Big House in a rematch of last season’s triple-overtime thriller.

9. Nebraska, Oct. 9

Only the fifth conference match-up between the two bluebloods, it’s the first meeting in Lincoln since 2012.

8. Maryland, Nov. 20

Nebraska should be the tougher game, but this is a potential trap game on the road a week before dealing with Ohio State.

7. Washington, Sept. 11

The marquee match-up of the Michigan non-conference schedule, it’s a moment to make a big national statement against a Washington squad good enough to contend for a Pac-12 title.

6. at Michigan State, Oct. 30

Ohio State might be the bigger national rival for Michigan, but this is every bit as nasty. It’s an absolute must-win for Jim Harbaugh after losing to the Spartans last year.

5. Northwestern, October 23

Michigan’s six-game win streak in the series will be tested by defending Big Ten East champs.

4. Indiana, Nov. 6

It’s part of the November gauntlet that also includes Penn State and Ohio State. It’s a brutal sandwich between road trips to Michigan State and after to Happy Valley.

3. at Penn State, Nov. 13

Call this an elimination game in the Big Ten East race – assuming both are still alive for it come mid-November. At the very least, this has to be for second place in the division.

2. at Wisconsin, Oct. 2

The Badgers have had Michigan’s number over the last few seasons – the jet-sweep worked over and over and over again last year in Ann Arbor. Washington is one early measuring stick, and this is the other before a rough finishing kick.

1. Ohio State, Nov. 27

In case you haven’t heard, Michigan has had problems against Ohio State in the Jim Harbaugh era. It’s a home game, but that hasn’t mattered much for the Wolverines lately in the series.

Games vs. The West: at Nebraska, Northwestern, at Wisconsin

Missed Teams From The West: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue

Michigan Wolverines Football Schedule Analysis: The Wolverines will get  one giant test against Washington early on, but the first month isn’t bad if they can pull that off.

It gets fun in a hurry with the run against the West, suffering the bad luck of playing both Wisconsin and Northwestern, and needing to go on the road to face Nebraska.

The Ohio State game is at home, but the dates with Michigan State and Penn State are on the road as part of a run of three away dates in four weeks.

Michigan Wolverines Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: Michigan beats Washington and has no issues with the rest of September, including the Big Ten opener against Rutgers. If everything works perfectly, they survive the trip to Wisconsin and beat Wisconsin to stay perfect going into the off week.

Realistically, the start to the second half isn’t all that bad. With a win over Michigan State, the Wolverines are 9-0 going into the date with Penn State. At the very least, they’re 10-1 going into the showdown against Ohio State in Ann Arbor.

Michigan Wolverines Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: Michigan loses to Washington, loses to Wisconsin in Madison, and even worse, loses to Nebraska in Lincoln. Just when it seems like things couldn’t be any rougher for Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines lose again to Michigan State, drop the date at Penn State, and of course, get obliterated by Ohio State.

BREAKING: Michigan-Ohio State canceled, will Big Ten rules change?

With “the game” called off, what comes next?

[jwplayer QVGfvgek-er0jUifI]

After a week of speculation, the news that many had feared became official today: The Ohio State-Michigan game will be canceled. The news was originally reported by TheWolverine.com’s Chris Balas and confirmed by Michigan this morning.

The decision comes as Michigan has had rising COVID-19 positives throughout the past week, and were coming off of a canceled game against Maryland this past Saturday. As of today, the Wolverines have been cleared for limited, distanced workouts, but have not yet been cleared to practice as a team.

The implications from this cancelation depend on the Big Ten decision makers. Currently, a 5-0 Ohio State team would not be able to play in the Big Ten Championship game. The rule has been that teams need to play six games in order to be eligible. In addition, Big Ten teams have not been allowed to schedule outside the conference under any circumstances.

The Big Ten will have one overarching priority in all of this: making sure Ohio State has every chance available to get into the College Football Playoff. With unprecedented rules in an unprecedented year, nothing would be surprising. The Big Ten has nothing holding them back from changing the qualifications for the championship game, or in allowing Ohio State to schedule an opponent for this weekend. Now, we wait and see.
