Cardinals sign 1st-round pick Paris Johnson, 4 other draft picks

Paris Johnson, Michael Wilson, Jon Gaines, Clayton Tune and Owen Pappoe all signed their rookie contracts before the start of rookie minicamp.

The Arizona Cardinals were able to get over half their 2023 draft class under contract before the start of rookie minicamp on Friday. The team announced five of their nine draft picks signed their rookie contracts, including first-round pick Paris Johnson.

These were the draft picks to sign on Thursday at the team’s headquarters in Tempe.

  • OL Paris Johnson (Round 1, pick 6 overall)
  • WR Michael Wilson (Round 3, pick 94 overall)
  • OL Jon Gaines (Round 4, pick 122 overall)
  • QB Clayton Tune (Round 5, pick 139 overall)
  • LB Owen Pappoe (Round 5, pick 168 overall)

Johnson’s contract, as a first-round pick, is four years with a team option for a fifth year.

The rest of the draft picks signed standard four-year contracts.

The following draft picks remain unsigned:

  • LB B.J. Ojulari (Round 2)
  • CB Garrett Wilson (Round 3)
  • CB Kai’Trel Clark (Round 6)
  • DL Dante Stills (Round 6)

With how rookie contracts are slotted and designed in the current collective bargaining agreement, there is no reason to think that the remaining draft picks won’t get signed in the near future.

Rookie holdouts are basically a thing of the past.

Rookie Michael Wilson shares interesting connection to Cardinals WR coach

Both Wilson and Cardinals WR coach Drew Terrell wore No. 4 at Stanford,

Receiver Michael Wilson was surprised when the Arizona Cardinals selected him in the third round of the 2023 draft. He said in his conference call after being drafted that he wouldn’t have had the Cardinals even in his top 10 of teams interested,

However, he does share an interesting connection with a Cardinals coach.

Wilson, who wore No. 4 in college for Stanford, shared a number with the Cardinals’ receivers coach Drew Terrell. Terrell wore No. 4 for Stanford in his college career.

In five seasons for the Cardinal, Wilson caught 134 passes for 1,662 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Terrell, who played for Staford from 2009-2012, finished with 71 career receptions for 797 yards and one touchdown.

Cardinals’ grade for 3rd-round pick Michael Wilson: B

The addition of Wilson in the third round has some upside even with him suffering several unlucky injuries.

The Arizona Cardinals used the second of two third-round selections in the NFL draft for Stanford wide receiver Michael Wilson.

What grade do they get for drafting the oft-injured receiver?

Grade: B

Wilson says all the right things. He is a fierce competitor who loves the game of football, loves to compete and will fight for anything he can get.

He has good length at nearly 6-foot-2.

His athletic numbers are odd, as some are below average and others are elite. He had a below average 40 time but his 10-yard split was in the 87th percentile.

He has not had soft tissue injuries but he is prone to freak injuries like bone breaks. He broke his collarbone, his foot and his hand.

He isn’t a home run of a selection but he will make a nice addition to the team.

Sophia Smith’s boyfriend, a football player, was selected in the NFL Draft

The Arizona Cardinals took Michael Wilson with the 94th overall pick

Michael Wilson is trading the Stanford Cardinal for the Arizona Cardinals.

The wide receiver, and boyfriend of U.S. women’s national team star Sophia Smith, was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft on Friday.

The couple met at Stanford, where Smith starred for two seasons before leaving school early and becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NWSL draft.

Wilson played five seasons at Stanford, compiling 134 catches for 1,662 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Wilson will join another USWNT significant other in Arizona, where Julie Ertz’s husband Zach Ertz currently stars as a tight end for the Cardinals.

In addition, J.J. Watt, who is married to former Dash and Red Stars forward Kealia Ohai Watt, retired last year after spending his final two seasons with the Cardinals.

Smith, who plays for the Portland Thorns, will at least be on the same side of the country as Wilson, though Portland and Phoenix are more than 1,000 miles apart.

Lions draft 2023: 20 prospects to know for Day 2

The Lions have three 2nd-round picks, for now. Here are some prospects to know who could be those picks

The first night of the 2023 NFL draft saw the Detroit Lions select two players. Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs and Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell joined the Lions at pick No. 12 and 18 overall, respectively.

The trade made by Lions GM Brad Holmes to move back from No. 6 to ultimately land Gibbs shook up the team’s outlook for Day 2. Detroit now has three second-round picks: 34, 48 and 55. The Lions no longer have a third-round pick, with No. 81 heading back to Arizona in that trade.

Detroit figures to be out of the running back and linebacker markets now. There are still needs at several spots, including defensive tackle, cornerback and offensive guard.

Here are 20 prospects still on the board who fit the Lions and the draft range for the second day of the draft. The frontloaded picks mean these players are generally expected to be second-round selections, though GM Brad Holmes proved that projections don’t hold much water with him.

10 receivers for Patriots to target in 2023 NFL draft

Any of these 10 receiver prospects could help the Patriots.

Improving at the wide receiver position could mean the difference between a successful and failed season for the New England Patriots. They ultimately control their fate regarding that outcome with the No. 14 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft.

And there’s a good chance it won’t just stop there.

Regardless of whether the Patriots use their first-round pick on a receiver or not, they might end up double dipping at the position in hopes of landing on a player that can make an immediate impact on the roster.

There’s no question the team needs a legit No. 1 receiving option that can consistently separate and make plays on the outside. They could get it with speed, size or a combination of both in this year’s draft.

Here are 10 receivers for the Patriots to target.

The Seahawks offense has a strong foundation heading into the 2023 NFL draft – especially at the positions that matter most in the modern game. However, the team does need to add a few pieces here and there to complete the puzzle. At the top of the list is a potential long-term starter at center. Next up is finding a genuine No. 3 option at the wide receiver position to take some of the load off DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
