Browns make 3 roster moves as they travel to Detroit to take on Bills

The Browns have made three roster moves today as they prepare to travel to Detroit to take on the Buffalo Bills.

The Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills are set to face off at Ford Field in Detroit as Orchard Park has been snowed out. The Browns will be looking to improve to 4-6 on the season, while the Bills look to climb to 7-3 after a devastating loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week.

Yesterday the Browns brought in six players for tryouts as they do every week, and now today they have made three roster moves as they travel north to Michigan. Here are the three roster moves and their importance to the Browns as they get set to take on the Bills.

Browns missing 5 from Thursday’s practice with Bills up next

As the Browns and Bills get set to face off in Detroit, Cleveland had five players missing from practice.

As the Cleveland Browns prepare to travel to Detroit for their matchup against the Buffalo Bills due to weather in New York, they are getting healthy at the right time. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah returned to practice yesterday, and now tight end David Njoku practiced today. The Browns, however, were missing five from practice today.

Defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey missed practice with a head injury, and Michael Dunn and D’Anthony Bell both missed their second straight practice. Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott was dismissed from practice for a personal reason, and right tackle Jack Conklin was given his usual day of rest.

All things considered, the Browns are entering this matchup at near-full health as backups are the only ones out with injuries. The same cannot be said for the Bills who are still missing two starting defensive linemen, a starting linebacker, and a rotational receiver, and are still limiting quarterback Josh Allen.

Browns vs. Bills: David Njoku, two others not practicing Wednesday

The Browns are missing David Njoku and two others from Wednesday’s practice as they prepare for the Bills.

The Cleveland Browns are getting a big name back at practice today, but are missing three others as they get ready for a potential snowy game against the Buffalo Bills. Tight end David Njoku is the headliner who is out of practice, still nursing a high ankle sprain.

The other two names missing are reserve players in offensive guard Michael Dunn, nursing a back injury, and safety D’Anthony Bell, who is dealing with a concussion. This does, however, mean that linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is back at practice for the Browns.

In desperate need of an upset win, the Browns are trending in the right direction health-wise.

Browns announce 7 inactives vs. Dolphins including Perrion Winfrey

The Browns have released their inactives list, and it includes a couple of injured starters and fourth round rookie Perrion Winfrey

The Cleveland Browns have announced their seven inactive players as they look to make it two in a row against the Miami Dolphins. It was already hinted that rookie defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey would miss his second game in a row as a healthy scratch, and that has indeed come to fruition.

Joining Winfrey on the inactive list are starters tight end David Njoku and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who were ruled out earlier this week. Quarterback Kellen Mond, hybrid player Demetric Felton, cornerback Thomas Graham Jr., and offensive guard Michael Dunn round out the list of inactives as well.

Browns sign DE Stephen Weatherly, bring back DT Sheldon Day and 2 others

Weatherly spent most of his first 6 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings

On a day where the Denzel Ward contract extension grabbed the Cleveland headlines, the Browns quietly restocked the roster with one new free agent signing and bringing back three others from the 2021 squad.

The newcomer is defensive end Stephen Weatherly, who finished the 2021 campaign with the Denver Broncos. Weatherly, 28, has spent most of his six-year NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. He played for the Vikings when Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was running the Minnesota offense. The 6-5, 262-pound Weatherly also played one year (2020) with the Carolina Panthers.

The most prominent re-signing player is defensive tackle Sheldon Day. He’s joined by WR Ja’Marcus Bradley and OL Michael Dunn, who were exclusive rights free agents (ERFA) who signed their contract tender offers on Monday.

Day played in seven games, starting one, in his first season in Cleveland. He didn’t initially make the Browns despite a strong preseason and training camp, but the 28-year-old Day joined Cleveland in November and played well enough down the stretch to return. He was an unrestricted free agent.

Browns tender three exclusive rights free agents

Three players tendered today as exclusive rights, likely ensuring their return to the team. A few restricted guys could get their tenders soon as well:

The Cleveland Browns are getting busy with a few decisions that they need to make. Earlier today, the team placed the franchise tag on David Njoku. We discussed that as a possibility, as did ESPN, given how valuable the tight end is seen around the league.

The team has also now placed given tenders to three players making them exclusive rights free agents:

  • OL Blake Hance
  • OL Michael Dunn
  • WR Ja’Marcus Bradley

All three will now return to the team and cannot negotiate with other teams.

Hance played a vital role for the team as offensive lineman after offensive lineman went down with injuries. Dunn was a hero in the 2020 playoffs but didn’t see the field much in 2021 while Bradley played in five games with four catches for 64 yards and two kick returns as well as 53 snaps on special teams.

Next up could be placing tenders on would be restricted free agents that include D’Ernest Johnson, Chase McLaughlin, Nick Mullens and Porter Gustin.

The team also has a number of free agents they may try to retain before the league year officially opens.

Can Michael Dunn make Browns roster decisions even harder?

Michael Dunn came out of nowhere to have a great playoff game for the Browns before getting hurt. He’s in a deep OL group where he’ll fight for his roster spot in training camp.

The Cleveland Browns may have too many talented players. A great problem to have but it calls a lot of players’ futures into question including Michael Dunn.

Dunn, as Browns fans will likely remember for a long time, came on to start at left guard for the team in their return to the playoffs. With Joel Bitonio out due to contact tracing related to COVID-19 and both Chris Hubbard and Nick Harris out due to injury, the Browns turned to Dunn.

An undrafted free agent in 2017, Dunn didn’t get a chance to play a regular-season snap until last season. Stepping in for the biggest game in recent Cleveland football history, Dunn did more than hold his own. Instead, Dunn was often able to handle whatever the Pittsburgh Steelers threw at him including Cameron Heyward:

In the end, Pro Football Focus gave Dunn high marks for his impressive work against a very good defensive front seven and after getting very little practice time over the past few weeks. PFF ranked Dunn fourth in run blocking among guards in the wild card round of the playoffs.

An injury knocked him out of the game and gave a chance for “some guy named Blake (Hance)” to show he could play as well.

Now, with training camp about to open up around the league, the Browns get a chance to see what Dunn can do for a follow-up. Unfortunately for Dunn, there isn’t a starting spot on the offensive line and he, likely, will have to compete for a roster spot.

As currently constructed, Jedrick Wills, Bitonio, J.C. Tretter, Wyatt Teller and Jack Conklin will start. Harris returns from injury while Hubbard may not be available right away. Hance showed he could hold his own and will compete for a roster spot.

Drew Forbes returns from the COVID-19 opt-out list. Forbes was a player that Cleveland had high hopes for in the zone running scheme implemented in 2020 but his opt-out opened doors for others.

At tackle, besides the starters and Hubbard, the Browns have added a few names as well. Greg Senat was brought over in free agency while James Hudson III was drafted in the fourth round. Those three could also move inside to guard if needed while big (6’8″) Alex Taylor is an interesting blend of size and speed.

Not including Hubbard (whose recovery from a late-season knee injury is still a bit of an unknown), Cleveland has double-digit offensive linemen fighting for roster spots. Harris and Hudson are likely secure in their spots due to being drafted in the last two years.

If Hubbard is healthy, he likely secures the eighth spot.

Last year, the Browns started the season with nine linemen on the opening 53 man roster. If that number stays constant, and Hubbard isn’t available, Cleveland has two spots open after their starting five and backups Harris and Hudson.

Dunn’s play in the playoffs is a sign that he could easily take one of those spots but Hance, Senat, Taylor and Forbes all have positives as well. On the other hand, none of those five have proven anything over the span of an entire year.

Did Dunn do enough on the practice squad and his great playoff game to give him a leg up on the competition? Could the Browns leverage his play on such a big stage into a trade to add talent at a different position or more draft capital?

Having too much talent is a great problem to have. Dunn proved in the playoffs that he has the talent to make Cleveland’s 53 man roster but was it enough?

Browns OL didn’t allow a pressure vs. the Steelers despite high blitz rate

It’s truly remarkable how well the shuffled offensive line performed in Pittsburgh.

[jwplayer TUUkrn5i-ThvAeFxT]

One of the perceived advantages the Pittsburgh Steelers held over the Cleveland Browns entering the wild-card round meeting on Sunday was a rested and relatively healthy Steelers defensive front going up against a Browns offensive line minus Pro Bowl left guard Joel Bitonio. It got even dicier-looking for the Browns when All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin and Bitonio’s replacement, Michael Dunn, each left the game and did not return with injuries of their own.

It didn’t matter. The Browns offensive line still dominated Pittsburgh. Aside from the impressive ground attack (127 yards on 31 carries), the pass protection pitched a complete shutout. All-Pro T.J. Watt, Pro Bowler Cam Heyward and the rest of the Steelers pass rush never got close enough to Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield to register a single pressure on No. 6 in white and orange.

From Zebra Technologies, which is behind the NFL Next Gen stats, in its wild-card round press release,

Baker Mayfield was cool under pressure on Sunday night as he went 13/18 for 192 yards and 3 TD vs. the blitz. Despite the Steelers’ 53% blitz rate, Pittsburgh didn’t force any pressures on Mayfield’s 34 dropbacks, marking the 2nd most dropbacks without a pressure in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016).

A sped-up Browns offense helped out, too. Also from Zebra Technologies, Mayfield got the ball out of his hands quicker on Sunday night in an average of 2.34 seconds. That’s a quarter of a second faster than any other game he played this year.

Mayfield’s passing chart for the night from Next Gen stats:

That doesn’t happen without phenomenal pass protection from the Browns line. Remember, OL coach Bill Callahan and his assistant, Scott Peters, were both not on the sidelines due to COVID-19 issues. With no head coach Kevin Stefanski either, it’s truly remarkable how well the shuffled offensive line performed in Pittsburgh.

Browns place OL Michael Dunn, CB Robert Jackson on injured reserve

The Browns also placed A.J. Green on the practice squad I.R.

Two players who acquitted themselves nicely when pressed into emergency duty for the Browns are now done for the year. Offensive lineman Michael Dunn and cornerback Robert Jackson were each placed on the team’s injured reserve on Tuesday.

Dunn suffered a calf injury while filling in for Joel Bitonio as the team’s starting left guard in the Browns’ wild-card win over the Steelers. Jackson injured his hamstring in the game. Both players are now done for the season, with the minimum I.R. time of three games carrying through the end of the playoffs.

With Bitonio due back from his COVID-19 absence, the loss of Dunn should be mitigated. Denzel Ward could also return to the Browns after missing the last two weeks with COVID-19, too. Jackson had seen a major increase in playing time in Ward’s absence.

The Browns also placed CB A.J. Green on the practice squad injured reserve. Green played in the Steelers contest as a practice squad elevation. To replace Green, the Browns brought back CB Donovan Olumba to the practice squad. Olumba was on the Browns during the 2020 offseason after signing with the team from the Cowboys.

Postgame injury update: Jack Conklin, Michael Dunn both day-to-day

Both offensive linemen escaped long-term injuries

The injury bug bit the Cleveland Browns offensive line hard on Sunday night during the team’s 48-37 wild-card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fortunately, it seems as if the walking wounded on the front line will be able to play in the divisional round matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin left the game early on with a hamstring injury. After heading straight to the locker room for evaluation, Conklin did return to the sidelines but never grabbed a helmet again.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski deemed Conklin as “day-to-day” in his Monday press conference with reporters. “We’ll know more as the week goes on,” coach Stefanski added.

The prognosis was the same for left guard Michael Dunn, who left the game with a calf injury. Dunn was starting in place of Pro Bowler Joel Bitonio, who tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to miss the game. When Dunn left, freshly signed Blake Hance had to finish the game at left guard.

Stefanski offered no new updates on the Browns players currently on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.
