Seahawks release LB Michael Dowell from the practice squad

Seahawks release LB Michael Dowell from the practice squad

The NFL is a fastmoving business, especially for those who are on perpetual roster bubbles. Such is the case for the linebacker Michael Dowell, who was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Monday afternoon. Dowell was signed to Seattle’s practice squad five days ago. Now, he is seeing a new NFL home.

Dowell was a defensive back in college at Michigan State and Miami of Ohio. When he went undrafted this past spring and signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, he went to the Queen City as a safety. However, when he was signed by the Seahawks he was done so as a linebacker.

With Dowell’s release, there is now an open spot on Seattle’s practice squad. Perhaps linebacker Jamie Sheriff, who was released to make room for Dowell, could be back. Seahawks Wire will be sure to update as soon as a transaction is likely to be made this week.

Former Michigan State football defensive back signs to Seattle Seahawks practice squad

A former MSU safety, now a linebacker, has signed with the Seahawks’ practice squad

A former Michigan State football player has found a new home in the NFL. On Wednesday, the Seattle Seahawks announced that they have signed linebacker Michael Dowell to the practice squad.

Dowell, who also had brother Andrew and David on the MSU team, was a safety in college but has since converted to linebacker at the next level.

Dowell spent three years with Michigan State before transferring to Miami of Ohio for two seasons. He signed with the Bengals this spring as an undrafted free agent before being cut, but now finds a nice landing spot in the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks have made a roster move with their practice squad. On Wednesday, it was announced the team had signed linebacker Michael Dowell, who was previously with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Dowell went undrafted this year and signed with the Bengals as a safety. In college, Dowell was primarily a defensive back. He spent the first three years of his collegiate career with the Michigan State Spartans, before transferring to Miami of Ohio for his final two seasons.

During his time in college, Dowell recorded 239 total tackles (12 of which were for a loss), defended 16 passes, snagged two interceptions, and logged two sacks as well. Interestingly, Seattle is signing Dowell to be a linebacker for them. Makes sense, considering how much the linebacker position has been a weak point for the Seahawks overall this season.

Unfortunately, when a new person comes to the practice squad, it often means someone has to go. This time, it is linebacker Jamie Sheriff who drew the short straw. Sheriff made a name for himself in the preseason, especially in the finale against the Browns where he recorded two sacks.

The Dowell brothers were an institution at Michigan State football at the end of the Mark Dantonio era, with all three playing together at the same time. Michael Dowell transferred to Miami of Ohio back in 2022, and was able to impress teams with his pro day workouts enough to find a landing spot in the NFL, where he will sign with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent (UDFA).

Dowell will join his former teammates in Cincinnati, Rocky Lombardi and Joe Bachie, with Rocky also signing a new contract with the Bengals today as well.

Michael’s brother, Andrew, found good success in the NFL as a special teams specialist after starting as an UDFA, where he plays for the Saints.

Miami of Ohio coaches must have been watching a lot of older Michigan State football film recently. On the same day where former MSU wide receiver Tre’Von Morgan officially transferred to Miami of Ohio, his former teammate, safety Michael Dowell, will follow suit.

Dowell was originally slated to join Pittsburgh, but will instead head to Ohio with his former teammate.

Michigan State football 2022 transfer tracker

Check out how the transfer portal is shaking out for MSU in 2022

As many know, the transfer portal is set to be a huge part of Mel Tucker’s tenure at Michigan State. The new era of college football is centered around the use of the transfer portal. Tucker used the portal to flip a roster from a 2-5 season in his first year to an 11-2 season in year two, mainly in part to the additions through the transfer portal.

The transfer portal should be viewed as another form of recruiting, as a team will have two ‘recruiting classes’ per year, the traditional high school class and a transfer class.

Transfers do work both ways, while the team will add multiple players through the portal, losing players to the portal will also become a reality every season.

Take a look at how Michigan State’s 2022 transfer portal, both incoming and outgoing, looks like:

Vols’ 2022 opponent: Michigan State defensive back transfers to Pittsburgh

Tennessee 2022 opponent: Michigan State defensive back transfers to Pittsburgh

Redshirt junior safety Michael Dowell has transferred from Michigan State to Pittsburgh.

“Humble, grateful, and ready to work,” Dowell said when announcing his transfer to the Panthers.

Tennessee is slated to play at Pittsburgh on Sept. 10 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dowell recorded 83 tackles, 0.5 sacks, five pass deflections and recovered one fumble in 32 games at Michigan State. He is from St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.

Pittsburgh defeated the Vols, 41-34, in the inaugural Johnny Majors Classic at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 11 during the 2021 campaign.

Michigan State football transfer Michael Dowell chooses Pitt

MSU transfer Michael Dowell is heading to Pitt

Michael Dowell comes from a line of brothers that have made a huge impact at Michigan State over the past seven seasons. Like his older brothers Andrew and David before him, Michael was a standout at Cleveland’s St. Edwards High School before committing to Michigan State in the 2018 recruiting class.

Dowell spent the last four seasons as a member of the Spartans secondary, playing in 25 games while getting 82 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Dowell had lost his starting spot on the defense to redshirt freshman Darius Snow earlier this season and made the decision that he was going to move on elsewhere to finish his collegiate career.

Dowell has made the decision that he will finish his collegiate career with Pat Narduzzi and the University of Pittsburgh, a spot Dowell will surely fit in well at.

The Dowell brothers will forever be Spartan fan favorites and Spartan Nation will be cheering on Michael at his next stop at Pitt.

Michigan State football DB Michael Dowell enters NCAA transfer portal

Michigan State football DB Michael Dowell enters NCAA transfer portal

It’s hard to say this is a shocking bit of news, but it is bittersweet. On Sunday, Rainer Sabin of the Detroit Free Press reported that Michigan State football defensive back Michael Dowell has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Dowell, who is a bit of a ‘tweener’ between a safety and a linebacker, never quite fit into the Spartans’ new scheme and eventually lost his starting job to Darius Snow. The fourth-year junior participated in senior day activities on Saturday.

Dowell’s family is beloved at MSU and he should finish his career in a strong fashion in a smaller conference where he can really shine.
