Former Super Bowl champ reveals why he disliked playing for Patriots

Michael Bennett explains why he didn’t like playing in New England

Michael Bennett’s short-lived run with the New England Patriots is often one of the forgotten moments in history.

The former three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion was traded to the Patriots by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2019 offseason. During the season, the team suspended him for a situation involving a position coach before ultimately trading him to the Dallas Cowboys.

Looking back on everything, Bennett claimed he had a good experience in New England, but he was also honest about his opinion that he didn’t like playing there.

“I just didn’t like it there. I just feel like I didn’t fit into the situation,” Bennett said on the “Games with Names” podcast. “…I just came from a very free-spirited place. …I didn’t like my position coach because he didn’t know nothing about defensive ends or anything like that. And every team I ever been on the defensive line was one of the most important parts of the team.

“In New England, I feel like it was more about the secondary and the linebackers. Overall, my experience with the Patriots was a good experience. Like I said, I just wasn’t used to [the way they did things]. Pete [Carroll] didn’t really bother us about certain things. It was just like, you do your job, come to work.”

New England isn’t for everybody, and that was clearly the case for Bennett during his short run with the team. The feeling was mutual as former Patriots coach Bill Belichick sent him packing to Dallas for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

Less than a year later, Bennett announced his retirement from the NFL.

Byron Murphy II says he’s studied Seahawks great Michael Bennett a lot

Seattle fans now have legitimate hope that soon their defensive line will once again be the envy of the NFL.

The last time the Seattle Seahawks had a dominant defensive line it was when Cliff Avril was disrupting opponents from the edge, Red Bryant was stuffing everybody inside and Michael Bennett was wreaking havoc all over the place. Seattle fans now have legitimate hope that soon their defensive line will once again be the envy of the NFL.

Last night the team picked Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II, who is the top-ranked interior defensive linemen in the 2024 draft class. Even better, Murphy is a Seahawks fans who grew up idolozing the Legion of Boom and Marshawn Lynch. Murphy also says he studied Bennett a lot.

Murphy earned the highest pass rush grade in the nation last season at his position and also did splendid work against the run.

Bennett of course set a very high standard to match – to say nothing of all the Aaron Donald comps that Murphy got during draft season. One thing he does have in common with them is his ability to disrupt from multiple positions.

Murphy told the local media last night that he’s an all-three-downs type of guy. The team views him as a 3-tech who can also play nose tackle.

That means Murphy could replace either Jarran Reed or Dre’Mont Jones in the starting lineup if the Seahawks stick with their 3-4 fronts under new head coach Mike Macdonald. Throw in Leonard Williams and Seattle should have one of the best defensive lines in the league, at least on paper.

Seahawks NT Jarran Reed talks about working with Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett

Reed is back in the fold, but he is not the only former Seahawks defensive lineman back.

The culture Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks have cultivated for the better part of two decades is truly something special. Players who have been in the program always seem to find their way back, even if the endings were a bit unceremonious.

One such player is defensive lineman Jarran Reed. After two years away from Seattle – enjoying stints in Kansas City and Green Bay – Reed is back in the fold. But he is not the only former Seahawks defensive lineman back. Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril – the two wrecking balls of the Legion of Boom’s defensive line – are still around. Although they are no longer playing, Bennett and Avril can still impact Seattle with their knowledge, which is what they did when they briefly coached.

Reed remembers his former teammates well, and had nothing but kind words to say about Bennett and Avril. Their presense even inspired him to work harder as well.

Reed could not be coming back to Seattle at a more perfect time. The Seahawks are in desperate need to improve their defensive line, which was ranked 30th against the run last year. Reed will need to keep working hard if Seattle wants to improve from their abysmal effort last year.

The Seattle Seahawks in their peak Legion of Boom days were the most entertaining and compelling group of athletes in the world. One reason they were so dominant was an unparalleled intensity. Sometimes that high motor resulted in clashes behind the scenes, though.

Earlier this week Cliff Avril was a guest on K.J. Wright’s podcast and he told a story about Earl Thomas snapping on him for eating sunflower seeds during a walkthrough practice. Watch.

77 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 77 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 77 jersey number.

Another week has gone, and the New England Patriots are now officially 77 days away from their 2023 regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

That means we’re listing the players throughout the history of the organization that have worn the No. 77 jersey.

One of the current players that come to mind is offensive tackle Trent Brown, who might end up being one of the team’s most important players heading into the season. He’s a behemoth of a human being and one of the better blindside protectors in the league when he’s on his game.

Another former Patriot that has worn No. 77 that comes to mind is three-time Pro Bowler Michael Bennett. His stay with the Patriots was obviously short-lived, but there was a time when he was considered one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL.

Of course, there are plenty of others left to be named as well. Here’s every Patriots player that has worn the No. 77 jersey:

Preseason NFL football is an abomination any way you cut it, but at least the Seattle Seahawks are trying to make their TV broadcasts interesting. On Wednesday, the team announced their lineup of broadcasters for this year’s three preseason games. The group includes Kate Scott and Paul Silvi, as well as several former Seattle players, including Michael Robinson, Michael Bennett and newcomer K.J. Wright.

The legendary Scott is the headliner, as she’s the only woman to broadcast games for the NFL, NBA, NHL, college football and the Olympics. Normally she does play-by-play for the Philadelphia 76ers – which she says will continue after the summer detour to Seattle.

The Seahawks are scheduled to host the Vikings on Thursday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. PT, followed by the Cowboys on Saturday, August 19, also at 7:00 p.m. Pacific. Their preseason slate ends with an early game in Green Bay against the Packers on Saturday, August 26 at 10:00 am.

It is always fun to reflect on how some of these guys performed and whether or not they lived up to expectations. This list only confirms the insanity of talent Ohio State has had at the defensive tackle position and some of the interesting guys that just missed the cut are Quinn Pitcock, future NFL center, Billy Price and Cameron Heyward. Let’s dive into the list.
