Micah Potter has had a solid NBA Summer League showing

Former Wisconsin basketball big man Micah Potter is on a two-way contract with the Salt Lake City Stars, and he played with the Utah Jazz throughout the NBA Summer League campaign.

Potter has been the starting center in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Through three starts for the Jazz, he put up a double-double. The Ohio native is averaging 12 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

Potter has done a little bit of everything for the Jazz. He is knocking down 3s, dropping dimes and grabbing boards.

The former Wisconsin Badger seeks to make an impact with the big club this fall.

Micah Potter is one of three Badgers competing in NBA Summer League in Las Vegas this week. Potter is with the Utah Jazz on a two-way deal and playing with the club at 2023 Las Vegas Summer League. Aleem Ford is playing with the Sacramento Kings and 2022 lottery pick Johnny Davis is playing with the Washington Wizards.

Potter has been starting and getting heavy minutes with the Jazz both in Salt Lake City and now in Las Vegas.

The former Badger started at center against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. Potter finished with 18 points and went 7-13 from the field while knocking down a pair of threes and grabbing nine rebounds.

The 2023 NBA Summer League is underway and two former Badger men’s basketball players are suiting up for their respective teams. Hosted in Las Vegas, both second-year guard Johnny Davis (Wizards) and third-year forward Micah Potter (Jazz) are in action.

Davis was selected 10th overall by Washington in the 2022 NBA Draft and he is set for an expanded role in the team’s offense in year two after the departures of Bradley Beal (PHX) and Kristaps Porzingis (BOS).

Potter went undrafted in 2021 and he’ll be entering his second year with Utah’s organization, looking to carve out a larger role for himself in 2023.

Johnny Davis isn’t the only former Badger playing in the Summer League this year

The Wisconsin basketball program has not necessarily been a high-level producer of NBA players over the last decade. Several players have made it and stuck around, but few are at that level making a significant impact.

The program currently has two graduates in the league: Washington Wizards guard Johnny Davis and Utah Jazz forward Micah Potter. Of note, Potter is currently on a two-way contract with the Jazz and the NBA G League’s Salt Lake City Stars.

With the month of July comes the aftermath of the most recent NBA Draft and the NBA Summer League. The latter provides a golden opportunity for players like Potter who are working to find a permanent spot on an NBA roster.

For Badgers fans out there, these are the three Wisconsin products that will take part in the Summer League action this moth:

The former Badger is back in Summer League

Micah Potter’s 2023 NBA Summer League campaign is already underway as the two-way signee played his first game for the Utah Jazz in the Salt Lake City Summer League on Monday night.

Potter had 10 points and 8 rebounds in just over 30 minutes of action as the Jazz took on the Oklahoma City Thunder in each team’s Summer League debut on Monday.

The former Badger will continue on to Las Vegas with Utah this weekend as one of two former Wisconsin basketball players in Summer League. Johnny Davis will also suit up for the Washington Wizards this weekend in Las Vegas.

Potter appeared in seven games last season for the Jazz, playing just over 7 minutes per contest.

Former Badgers C Micah Potter signs a two-way contract with NBA team

Former Badgers big man Micah Potter has found a new home in the NBA:

According to a report from Shams Charania, former Wisconsin Badgers big man Micah Potter has agreed to a two-way deal with the Utah Jazz on Tuesday.

The Utah Jazz have undergone a total rebuild after trading star players Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert this offseason, thus opening the door for several young, affordable players to earn minutes.

Last season, Potter averaged 17.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, landing him on the G-League All-Rookie team.

A two-way contract represents an opportunity for NBA teams to sign two players who will spend the bulk of the season in the G-League and 45 or fewer days with the NBA franchise.

For Potter, this is an ideal situation, and it will allow him to continue developing his game in the G-League while earning sporadic minutes in the association.

Wisconsin Badgers 2022 NBA Summer League Recap

Five former Badgers showcased their talents in the NBA summer league; let’s see how they fared:

The University of Wisconsin has only two players signed to guaranteed NBA contracts entering the 2022 season, Frank Kaminsky and lottery pick Johnny Davis, who was the first player selected during the Greg Gard era.

However, this summer, former Badgers Vitto Brown, Nate Reuvers, Micah Potter, and Aleem Ford also had a chance to showcase their talents in front of NBA scouting personnel in Las Vegas.

Summer league offers a little something for everyone who partakes. For rookies, it’s their first chance to get a taste of the next level. For other young players, it’s an opportunity to show their growth from one year to the next. For journeymen that have scratched and clawed their way to be in Las Vegas, it’s a last-ditch effort to make the leap from overseas to the association.

With summer league wrapping up last week, BadgersWire examines how all five former Wisconsin Badgers standouts played in Las Vegas:

Among those named to the All-Rookie team was former Wisconsin Badgers big man Micah Potter.

After going undrafted in 2021, the 6-foot-10, 248-pound center started all 33 games for the Sioux Falls Skyforce this past season, while averaging 17.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks on 44.1% shooting from beyond the arc.

It’s also worth noting that Potter earned a 10-day contract with the Detroit Pistons in late December, and would go on to appear in three games.

Joining the former Badgers standout on the All-Rookie Team are Luka Garza, Charles Bassey, Carlik Jones, and Mac McClung.

The NBA has been struck hard by COVID-19 as of late, forcing teams to expand their rosters and dive deeper into the player pool in order to find contributors.

That helped Aleem Ford a few weeks ago, as the Orlando Magic signed him and have subsequently played him in five games thus far.

Now there is another former Badger to add to the NBA list, as Micah Potter was signed by the Detroit Pistons.

The two-year starter at Wisconsin has spent much of the season with Miami’s G-League affiliate in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He’ll now join a Detroit team that sits at 5-27 on the season—good for last in the league.
