A Texas vs. Texas Tech battle shaping up for five-star WR Micah Hudson

Texas and Texas Tech still appear to be the front runners for five-star Micah Hudson.

The top wide receiver prospect in the state of Texas has locked in a couple of summer official visits. Inside Texas reports five-star Micah Hudson is set to see both Texas and Texas Tech in June.

Hudson is a dynamic playmaker with offers from all over the nation. His plus athleticism and crisp route running ability give him an opportunity to make an early impact at the college level.

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff have prioritized Hudson in the 2024 cycle. Texas can sell a chance at early playing time, a wide receiver-friendly system and a talented quarterback room.

Texas Tech deserves credit for fighting with the big dogs of college football in this recruitment. Hudson’s interest in Tech is genuine and the Red Raider coaching staff is in a good position for the five-star.

The Longhorns and Red Raiders are two schools that have been front runners for Hudson from the get-go. Ohio State is firmly in the mix, along with Georgia and Texas A&M, but Texas and Texas Tech seem to be in the lead.

On3 logs prediction for five-star WR Micah Hudson to Texas Tech

One prediction has Texas Tech landing the No. 5 player in the country.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have been building up some momentum on the recruiting trail ever since the hire of Joey McGuire.

He was named the head coach of the program on Nov. 8, 2021. At that moment he started recruiting immediately while interim head coach Sonny Cumbie ran the day-to-day football operations.

In his first full recruiting cycle, the Red Raiders secured the No. 27 composite class according to 247Sports. Their highest-rated player ranked No. 252 in the country. Looking ahead to the 2024 cycle, Tech has the highest-ranked class in the new look Big 12. They are now targeting one of the top players in the country.

On Tuesday, Sam Spiegelman of On3 logged a prediction for Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders to land one of the best wide receivers in the country.

Hudson would be the highest-rated recruit in Texas Tech history by a mile. In fact, they have never signed a five-star prospect since they began ranking recruits in 2000.

The five-star wide receiver from Lake Belton in Temple, Texas, is being pursued by the likes of the Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, and Oklahoma Sooners among others.

This would be a major win for McGuire if it holds true.

Texas slight favorite to land commitment from 5-star WR Micah Hudson

On3 has Texas as the favorite at 30.4%.

The No. 1 ranked wide receiver in the class of 2024 is Jeremiah Smith, who’s currently committed to Ohio State but will be visiting Florida and Miami soon. Next, there’s Lake Belton (Texas) five-star Junior Micah Hudson, who’s ranked No. 2 among wide receivers and No. 7 overall in his class.

According to 247Sports, Hudson has offers from 35 different programs so far. However, if we go by On3’s prediction model, there are only four schools with a realistic chance of landing his commitment.

On3 has Texas as the favorite at 30.4%, followed by Texas Tech (23.7%), Ohio State (15.3%) and Texas A&M at 12.8%. The long shots include Oklahoma (4.4%), then LSU, SMU, Baylor and TCU, all tied at 2.3%.

The scouting report on Hudson (6-foot-0, 190 pounds) is that he’s a sharp route runner with great hands.

Last season he totaled 65 catches, racking up 1,198 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He also has experience as a kickoff and punt returner, plus as a rusher, where his breakaway speed gives him an edge.

For now, the Longhorns’ class of 2024 has three members, all from within the state: Clear Lake four-star athlete Hunter Moddon, Aledo four-star cornerback Jaden Allen and Cy-Fair three-star quarterback Trey Owens.
