How former Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz performed in Florida’s Week 1 loss to Miami

Former Badgers quarterback Graham Mertz injured in Florida Week 1 loss to Miami

It was a forgettable start to the 2024 season for the Florida Gators and former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz.

The team fell, 41-17, to No. 19 Miami, and the former Badger left the game late in the third quarter with a head injury. His afternoon ended with 11 completions on 20 attempts for 91 yards and an interception.

Florida head coach Billy Napier said postgame that Mertz was diagnosed with a concussion. The hit came as he was sandwiched between two Miami defenders after he had released a pass that was intercepted.

The afternoon was a disastrous start to what shapes up as a rough season for the Gators. Napier has expressed confidence in the veteran quarterback throughout the offseason. That confidence may not matter with the team off to an 0-1 start and games remaining against No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Texas, No. 13 LSU, No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 10 Florida State.

It’s hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel for the Gators in 2024.

Five-star true freshman D.J. Lagway took over for Mertz after his injury and played the fourth quarter. Lagway’s college debut finished with 3 of 6 passing for 31 yards and one interception, plus 20 rushing yards on four carries.

Next up for Florida is a home game against Samford before the brutal schedule continues. It will be worth monitoring whether Mertz is cleared in time to play.

Heather Dinich: Notre Dame will host Miami in College Football Playoff

A new generation of Catholics vs. Convicts?

Notre Dame and Miami are scheduled to face each other during the 2025 regular season, the first meeting between the schools since 2017.

But what if they meet each other sooner? Like in this year’s College Football Playoff?

Heather Dinich has unveiled her projections for the first year of the expanded playoff in a story available only to ESPN+ subscribers. She has the Irish as the seventh seed and hosting the Hurricanes at Notre Dame Stadium.

While it surely wouldn’t be as famous as the Catholics vs. Convicts game, both teams’ seasons would be on the line, so more definitely would be at stake here.

There have been several preseason projections for the playoff, but most of the ones we’ve seen so far have the Irish either going on the road or missing it altogether.

Whatever anyone thinks though, it’s ultimately up to the Irish themselves to make their case. The talent is there, but they have to win the games they’re supposed to in order to be considered. They can do it.

Lou Holtz’s Charity Roasts Jimmy Johnson on Coach’s 81st Birthday

Lou Holtz’s charity had a unique way of wishing old rival Jimmy Johnson a happy birthday recently

Legendary college and NFL head coach Jimmy Johnson recently celebrated his 81st birthday.

Johnson is known for his time with the Miami Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys especially, as he took both programs to championships at their respective playing levels.

Johnson is remembered by Notre Dame fans for being Miami’s coach during the peak of the rivalry between the two schools.

When you think of Notre Dame-Miami, the first game that comes to mind for all is the 1988 “Catholics vs. Convicts” game that had the wild finish and helped send Notre Dame on their way to the national championship.

The social media account Holtz’s Heroes, which is the Lou Holtz charity, gave a unique birthday greeting to Jimmy Johnson recently.

Happy birthday indeed, coach.

Notre Dame No. 1, and Big Ten ‘Desperate’ to Get into State of Florida

As long as conference expansion is discussed, Notre Dame will be the top target of all.

Notre Dame is pridefully independent in football.  If you do the least bit of research, something many struggles to do, you can see why being independent means so much to those associated in any capacity with the football program.

But that doesn’t keep the rest of the nation of college football fans and analysts from wishing it were another way.

[autotag]Greg McElroy[/autotag] was discussing conference realignment on his podcast Always College Football, and when asked about potential Big Ten expansion targets, stated the obvious regarding Notre Dame.

“The No. 1 team that they would target would be Notre Dame, Notre Dame by a mile…Notre Dame is everyone’s No. 1.”

-Greg McElroy

Before anyone jumps on McElroy for putting Notre Dame in a conference, please realize he was answering a question that was asked to him by a viewer.

The more interesting part to me is the conversation he has about Miami possibly joining the Big Ten as he calls the conference “desperate” to get into the state of Florida.

Miami would do that, as would Florida State, which McElroy discusses and shares why both would make sense, specifically together.

You can see the entire conversation below.

Countdown to Kickoff: Jeremy Shockey is the Saints Player of Day 88

There are 88 days until the Saints kick off their 2024 season. No active player owns the No. 88 jersey, so we’re highlighting Super Bowl XLIV champ Jeremy Shockey:

There are 88 days to go until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 season, and we’re counting down the days by highlighting each player to wear the corresponding jersey number. No active Saints player owns the No. 88 jersey (it was most recently worn by tight end/fullback J.P. Holtz in 2022), so we’re looking further back to feature Super Bowl XLIV champion Jeremy Shockey.

A first-round pick in the 2002 draft by the New York Giants, Shockey thrived while making the jump from Miami to the NFL. He won All-Pro recognition as a rookie while setting a Giants franchise record for receptions (74) and was named to four Pro Bowls with New York. The Saints traded their second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft to acquire him in 2008, and he quickly found his way into the starting lineup.

Shockey was known for playing with an attitude and throwing his weight around as a blocker and receiver, though he didn’t see many targets in a Saints offense that was full of options; his most productive season in New Orleans was 2009, when he caught 48 passes for 569 yards and three touchdowns. But he made them count. Shockey converted a first down on 86 of his 148 career receptions, including the playoffs.

He especially stood out in Super Bowl XLIV. Shockey was targeted 4 times and caught 3 passes for 13 yards; most fans remember his go-ahead touchdown catch in the fourth quarter, but the play he might be most proud of was the famous Pierre Thomas touchdown on a screen pass where Shockey blocked two defenders to open a lane.

It’s a shame Shockey and the Saints made for such a brief combo. Injuries continued to trail him after being traded by the Giants and he never appeared in all 16 games in any of his three seasons in New Orleans. He finished his career with the Carolina Panthers in 2011 before retiring from pro football. Still, we have the stories and the highlight reel, and Shockey has a well-deserved Super Bowl ring. We’ll just have to wait and see which player picks up his No. 88 jersey next.

Chance to return to Miami ‘a big draw’ for Formula E – Dodds

Formula E’s calendar for the upcoming 2024-25 season, announced today, featured the standout revelation that the series would be returning to Miami for the first time in a decade.

The championship visited the south Florida city in its inaugural season, with a race on the streets being won by Nicolas Prost for the e.dams Renault team ahead of Scott Speed for Andretti and Abt Sportsline’s Daniel Abt.

Formula E has made no secret of its desire to increase its footprint in North America, having also raced in Long Beach in that first year (as well as the year after), New York between 2017-22, and north of the border in Montreal in 2017. More recently it’s raced in Portland – where it will return in two-week’s time – but while the Pacific Northwest event was a huge success on its debut last year, the championship couldn’t resist the lure of Homestead Miami Speedway.

“We think it’s a really good circuit, well suited to our style of racing, and the Miami name that comes with it, from a global audience, a global television audience, is a big draw,” Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds said of the move to Miami.

“I thought it was a very successful race in Portland last year, a very strong turnout and ticket sales have been pretty good this year as well for what is a doubleheader,” he said of Portland. “The race in Portland last year was a little bit of a surprise for us, I think. It delivered a much better race than we thought it might, and I think it being an IndyCar track, that opened our eyes up to the possibility of using other IndyCar tracks in the U.S. and the IndyCar crowd who largely came to watch it, because it is an IndyCar crowd there, were very very positive about our style of racing, the infrastructure we brought, the extent of the show.”

But while Miami’s return to the calendar has come at Portland’s expense, that’s not intended to be a trend that will continue, with Dodds describing the U.S as one of two “priority markets” for the series, along with China.

“We probably have around seven or eight different large U.S. cities currently talking to us about putting a race on in their city, so those conversations are live and always ongoing,” Dodds said. “One thing I’ve said previously is our calendar can sustain two races in North America and probably two races in China as the two locations in the world where we could put on two races, so I think what you might find in time is the North America market is an ‘and’, not an ‘or’, so we add an additional race location as opposed to continually changing out the U.S. locations.”

One potential additional U.S. location remains Los Angeles. Often talked about, it had been expected to be on next season’s schedule. But while Dodds confirmed “it’s not one for Season 11”, he did insist “I wouldn’t write off Los Angeles as a potential venue” for a future race.

Former Michigan State football DT Simeon Barrow staying at Miami

Former Michigan State football DT Simeon Barrow staying at Miami

After some recent speculation was floating around about former Michigan State football captain and defensive tackle Simeon Barrow jumping from Miami, where he committed this spring, over to Missouri, Barrow put those rumors to rest on Thursday, affirming his commitment to the Hurricanes on social media.

Simeon Barrow left MSU for Miami, but is rumored to be jumping to another team

Former Michigan State football captain and defensive tackle broke a lot of hearts when he opted to transfer out of East Lansing for Miami this offseason.

But, it seems like that trip to Florida will be short-lived, as 247Sports has reported that Barrow and Miami are on the rocks, with rumors that Barrow may jump ship to Missouri now.

Mario Cristobal, Miami ranked ahead of USC in post-spring top 25

Mario Cristobal and Miami are getting more of the benefit of the doubt than USC.

The Miami Hurricanes and Mario Cristobal had a terrible 2023 college football season. If you thought USC had a rough year — which it did — Miami wasn’t any better. In the end, Miami lost more games in 2023 than USC did, finishing 7-6. The Hurricanes lost their bowl game, whereas USC won the Holiday Bowl against Louisville. College Sports Wire has taken notes on what various media outlets are projecting in their post-spring college football top-25 rankings. In a composite set of rankings taken from four different outlets, Miami checks in at No. 19, whereas USC is not even ranked in the top 25.

Cristobal, far more than Lincoln Riley and USC, has struggled at his current job. Riley at least had an 11-win season in 2022. Cristobal has not come remotely close to a New Year’s Six bowl or ACC championship at Miami. Cristobal has struggled to develop high-end offensive talent in Coral Gables. Yes, he has a roster which — on paper — looks very good this season. Still, Cristobal deserves less benefit of the doubt than Lincoln Riley does. It isn’t showing up in the rankings, which reinforces how skeptical a lot of media outlets are toward USC and Riley.

The Trojans will simply have to do something about all of this and prove they’re being underappreciated.

Notre Dame communicating regularly with 2025 Florida shooting guard

Hope he ultimately picks the Irish.

So far, Notre Dame has not received any commitments for its 2025 recruiting class. Naturally, the only way to change that is to stay in constant contact with the recruits who might ultimately fill that list. One of those is four-star shooting guard recruit Dante Allen from Riviera Prep in Miami. At least that’s the case according to recruiting insider Jake Lieberman:

What makes this particular case interesting is that Notre Dame currently is not listed among the schools interested in him on 247Sports. In fairness though, the timeline on his profile hasn’t been updated since the late summer of 2022, so who knows how accurate that is?

Allen is the No. 10 2025 recruit in Florida according to 247Sports in a class that includes the twin sons of former NBA player Carlos Boozer. This past season, he averaged 21.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals a game.

A two-way guard would be a nice get for an Irish team still trying to build its culture. Of course, Allen has to say yes in the end. We’ll see how this goes.
