New Lions starting quarterback Jared Goff released a statement on his social media accounts thanking the city of Los Angeles and expressing excitement for a new opportunity in Detroit.

“Thank you to the entire city of Los Angeles for welcoming a 21-year-old kid with open arms and making this town feel like home. This city has shaped the man I’ve become and I will forever be grateful for the Kroenke family, my coaches, the support staff, and most importantly, my teammates for competing and fighting with me every Sunday — I’ve made memories with every one of you in that locker room that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“To the fans, thank you for the relentless support through all the ups and downs — it has meant the world to me. From the bottom of my heart, it’s been an honor to represent the city of L.A.

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes has a message for fans via the team’s social media account.

Holmes was named the Lions’ new GM on Thursday, and while most of the focus on him has surrounded around how he will impact the organization via coaching decisions and adding players, here we get a glimpse of his personality — that is universally praised by people in the Rams’ organization.

“Lions fans, hello! This is Brad Holmes, new general manager for the Detroit Lions. Excited to get to work. Looking forward to building this team with a collaborative approach and efforts to deliver a winner to this great city of Detroit, its passionate fanbase, and to uplift the community. One Pride!”

Willie McGinest: Matt Patricia ‘knows how to win’, encourages patience

In a recent interview, Willie McGinest says Detroiit Lions coach Matt Patricia “knows how to win” and that it takes time to build a team with a winning culture.

After two lackluster seasons as coach of the Detroit Lions, Matt Patricia is on the hot seat. Many have started to doubt if he is the right man to lead the Lions out of football futility and there is plenty of speculation surrounding if the Lions should show him — and general manager Bob Quinn — the door and start anew.

Even though the Lions recently went through a change in principal ownership, Shelia Ford Hamp has stayed committed to the Patricia/Quinn duo for another season — and maybe more due to the current COVID environment — to see if they can improve from the down years.

Some of the issues fans/players/analysts have had with Patricia include his ability to communicate effectively, perceived inability to recruit some highly toughed free agents, an abrasive coaching style, and being too aggressive with the players early in his tenure, creating some animosity in the locker room.

Most would agree Patricia’s rookie season was not the greatest on or off the field — including in the media room –, but those same people will tell you they saw a complete turnaround with Patricia in his second season. You could see the adjustments made by Patricia in his sophomore season and it became clearer what he is trying to build.

Unfortunately, after losing Matthew Stafford for the back half of 2019, it was a rough go for his second season, but I am not alone in believing Patricia is on the right path to building a successful organization.

Recently, long-time New England Patriot linebacker and NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest was on the Pardon My Take podcast, where he discussed some of the nuances of the Patriot Way and how Patricia needs time to build.

McGinest talked about the system and how it could be a hard sell to players —  especially when they haven’t been to the Super Bowl and seen the results. He also noted how players often expect instant success and are not willing to put in the work to get the ultimate prize.

One particular statement that caught my attention was when McGinest talked about how Bill Belichick only kept a few players that fit the criteria and the mold he was looking for in players and build around those guys. That sounds eerily familiar to how Patricia is building the team with jettisoning players that don’t fit the style and mold he is looking to develop in the locker room, i.e., Darius Slay and Quandre Diggs. McGinest also stated that the philosophy is not about having the best players, but the right ones. The ones who are willing to buy into the system and willing to put in the effort to achieve results.

McGinest would go on to say that Patricia “knows how to win”, is an astute individual who has been in a lot of different systems, and with his extensive knowledge of players, he knows what he needs to build the culture of a winning team.

Additionally, McGinest commented that it is vital to have a GM and coach who is on the same page — and with all intent and purpose, Patricia and Quinn are intertwined in their approach to being competitive week in and week out.

Everybody wants to win right now and many were expecting to be on top from day one when Patricia took over as coach. But these things take time to build, especially in a system where there is a team mentality and not a me mentality.

Patricia has spent the last two and a half years retooling the coaching staff and roster, bringing in individuals who fit the system. Good things take time to build and with the right mentality/work ethic, the Lions could see those dividends pay off very soon.

Watch: Drew Brees, Zion Williamson welcome Cesar Ruiz to New Orleans

New Orleans Saints first-round draft pick Cesar Ruiz received messages from two of the city’s sports icons: Drew Brees and Zion Williamson.

The New Orleans Saints selected Michigan center Cesar Ruiz in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and it didn’t take long for several big names in the local sports scene to reach out and welcome the rookie to the city.

One of Ruiz’s first teammates to contact him was someone he’ll become very well acquainted with once the Saints gather for training camp: quarterback Drew Brees. Brees interrupted a videoconference call between Ruiz and NFL Network’s Jane Slater, who shared the quarterback’s message on Twitter.

Sporting what appears to be a “quarantine beard,” Brees strolled into camera and excitedly greeted Ruiz, emphasizing how eager he is to get to work. See it for yourself:

If you’re wondering why Brees awkwardly staggered into view at the start of the clip, well, it’s him pulling a dad move. Brees was mimicking the dance moves Ruiz showed off on Thursday night when he learned that the Saints were picking him, which Saints coach Sean Payton joked, “This is what sealed it!”

But Brees wasn’t the only New Orleans sports icon to reach out to Ruiz, though. New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson, the face of the franchise, also shared a message to Ruiz — “from one first-round pick to another.”

Interestingly, Williamson echoed the same advice that Brees shared with him after the Pelicans drafted him last summer: if you show New Orleans love, it’ll love you back.

Zack Baun shares his first message with Saints fans

Wisconsin Badgers linebacker Zack Baun, a New Orleans Saints pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, took time to introduce himself to his new fans.

Wisconsin Badgers linebacker Zack Baun is now a member of the New Orleans Saints, who traded up to pick him in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. And he couldn’t be happier about it.

Baun spoke to fans for the first time in a video shared from the official Saints Twitter account, emphasizing how excited he is to join a team with such a strong culture of winning lots of football games. That echoes a sentiment shared by the Saints’ first-round pick, Cesar Ruiz, who was also eager to get to work with a team that owns a winning tradition.

That’s wild to hear given many Saints fans remember the days when the team was lucky to finish the season around .500. But it goes to show just how great of an era of Saints football we’re experiencing. To put it into perspective another way, the Saints have had just two seasons with six or fewer wins in Ruiz’s lifetime.

So, they’re certainly motivated to hit the ground running. You can see Baun’s messages for yourself where we’ve embedded them below:

Vonn Bell says his goodbyes to Saints fans and teammates

The New Orleans Saints lost free agent safety Vonn Bell to the Cincinnati Bengals. Bell took time to thank Saints fans for their support.

[jwplayer QfjzedKi-ThvAeFxT]

The Cincinnati Bengals agreed to terms with New Orleans Saints free agent Vonn Bell on a three-year contract offer, and it didn’t take the safety long to express gratitude to the team that brought him into the NFL. Bell addressed the Saints, his teammates, and their fans in a post from his official Twitter account, thanking them for the opportunity to join, in his words, “A brotherhood that will last FOREVER.”

It’s a bummer to lose Bell, who was an ascendant talent in the Saints secondary that’s really come into his own over the last year or two. Bell was one of the team’s leading tacklers in 2019 and led the entire NFL’s defenders in fumble recoveries, while also bagging the first interception of his career. On some level, the loss of his influence is going to be felt, whether on the field or in the locker room.

Of course, Bell should still go on to thrive in Cincinnati. He’s landing in a good spot, with a team preparing to add a shoo-in top quarterback prospect in Joe Burrow. He’ll also be playing alongside free safety Jessie Bates, whose skills set compliments Bell’s (Bates has intercepted three passes and recorded 100-plus tackles in each of his first two seasons).

And as for the Saints: fans should expect Malcolm Jenkins and C.J. Gardner-Johnson to compete for Bell’s spot at strong safety while also trying out in slot defense. There’s room on the field for both players to start, and now it’s up to the Saints coaching staff to determine where their skills are best applied.

Pete Carroll’s message to Seahawks ahead of playoffs: ‘It’s just football’

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll isn’t treating the game-planning any differently in the wild-card playoffs than the regular season.

The Seattle Seahawks head to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles this Sunday in the wild-card round of the postseason. For many young players, this will be their very first experience in a playoff game.

Coach Pete Carroll had a message for his squad Friday after practice.

“That it’s just football – it’s the same as it is week in and week out – it’s not different,” Carroll said. “What makes it different is the way you perceive it. As soon as that ball is kicked off, this game is the same and we have to play like we’re capable and not try to play to the moment or to the matchup. They’ve heard that message from the older guys and the guys who have been around.”

And the mantra isn’t just for the rookies, it’s also for the seasoned veterans, some who will be making their career-first playoff appearance – like safety Quandre Diggs.

“Really, the whole buildup is with that messaging,” Carroll continued. “The same messaging you’re asking questions about a first-year guy, well here’s a guy that’s dreamed of being in the playoffs and now he gets a chance. That can change you and the whole point is to not let the event change you so that you can play like you’re capable.

“That’s been the message throughout the week.”

The Seahawks and Eagles are set to square off Sunday at 1:40 p.m. PT.
