Pat Connaughton/Blake Wesley NBA Tracker: Oct. 28-Nov. 3

Not the best week for the former Notre Dame players.

After winning their first game, [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] and the Milwaukee Bucks have lost every game since. Connaughton tried to play his part with five points and two rebounds in an Oct. 30 loss to the defending champion Boston Celtics. But he followed that by shooting 1 of 7 from the field in a three-point, three-rebound, two-assist effort against the Memphis Grizzlies on Halloween. He wound up averaging 2.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists a game over the course of the week.

[autotag]Blake Wesley[/autotag] did not fare much better over the past week with the San Antonio Spurs. He started out all right with five points and two rebounds in just under 13 minutes while losing Oct. 30 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. But he played only half that number of minutes over the next two games combined and didn’t register a single meaningful statistic. The result was a scoring average of 2.8 and a rebounding average of 0.8 over the three games.

Former Duke basketball star Jared McCain scores career-high 19 points in NBA game

Former Duke basketball star Jared McCain flashed some familiar form on Saturday night with the best NBA game yet.

Former Duke basketball star [autotag]Jared McCain[/autotag] might only be five games into his rookie NBA season, but he looked right at home against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

The Philadelphia 76ers’ first-round draft pick scored 19 points, seven more than his previous career high, in just 17 minutes after making two 3-pointers. McCain shot 8/16 (50.0%) from the floor and snagged four rebounds despite Philadelphia’s 124-107 loss.

The early emergence shouldn’t surprise Duke fans who kept up with McCain this offseason. The Athletic’s Tony Jones reported in October that the rookie was earning attention in training camp thanks to his performance, and with Philadelphia down several star players early on, he’s getting an early chance to prove himself.

After Saturday’s game and his 12-point performance against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, McCain is averaging 7.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists through his first five regular-season games. He’s shooting 45.5% from the floor and 20.0% from beyond the arc.

McCain averaged 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 41.4% from 3-point range as a freshman with the Blue Devils, scoring at least 30 points in two of his four NCAA Tournament games.

2024-25 Memphis Grizzlies: A quick preview

With a healthy Ja Morant returning and key pieces like Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, the Grizzlies have the talent to make noise. They also added 7-foot-4 rookie Zach Edey, who should take pressure off Jackson Jr. in the frontcourt. However, despite these positives, it’s unclear if this bounce-back season will push them to the top of the standings again. The Western Conference is as stacked as ever, and securing a top seed might be a stretch.

The Grizzlies have a strong defensive core, with Jackson Jr. just a season removed from being Defensive Player of the Year, and Smart, another former DPOY, bringing more grit to the backcourt. Bane is evolving into one of the best three-point shooters in the league, and if he stays healthy, his shooting and playmaking could make a huge difference. Memphis also has a solid rotation of role players like Luke Kennard, who was the second-best three-point shooter last season, and versatile young talent in Santi Aldama, GG Jackson, and Brandon Clarke.

Armando Bacot spends day with North Carolina Tar Heels in Memphis

There’s no recent player who loves the Tar Heels more than Armando Bacot. Check out what he did Tuesday night.

When former Tar Heel Armando Bacot finished up his time in the NBA Summer League, the Utah Jazz decided not to sign him.

Thankfully, the Memphis Grizzlies took a chance on UNC’s all-time rebounds and double-doubles leader, signing him to an Exhibit 10 contract.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 with North Carolina in Memphis for a preseason exhibition game, you know Bacot had to catch up with his former teammates.

Bacot spent time at the Tar Heels’ morning shootaround, then sat courtside and tried his hand at announcing during the national broadcast on ESPNU.

UNC played exceptional basketball in its 84-76 victory over the Memphis Tigers, holding a double-digit lead for most of it. North Carolina junior guard Seth Trimble stole the show, scoring a game-high 33 points in the absence or RJ Davis, while Jalen Washington turned a few heads with his 17-point outing. You can’t forget about projected starting guard Elliot Cadeau, who scored 11 points and dished out 13 assists.

The Tar Heels won’t have Bacot’s post production this coming season, so they’ve been trying to find someone to at least show they’re ready to step into Bacot’s shoes. Washington showed he’s capable, plus Washington has something in his bag Bacot didn’t – the ability to shoot 3-pointers.

UNC also has freshman center James Brown, Vanderbilt transfer Ven-Allen Lubin and Georgia Tech transfer Tyzhaun Claude to fill Bacot’s shoes. Lubin likely will be the starter, as he showcased a couple electric plays in the exhibition win, but Washington can also push for starting minutes.

I can’t think of a recent player who loves North Carolina more than Bacot. It was great to seem him supporting the Tar Heels last night – and I hope it’s not the last we see of him in 2024.

It’s not too early to say the haters were wrong about Zach Edey

Zach Edey looked every bit the part of a well above average NBA big man in a 23 point preseason performance for Memphis on Monday.

Even after winning the college basketball National Player of the Year Award – two years in a row – few truly believed former Purdue Boilermakers big man Zach Edey’s success would translate at the NBA level.

Many argued he should be a second round pick – if picked at all – due to the fact that his playstyle is a remnant of a previous era: calling for the ball on the block, reading the defense, making a post move or two, and going up for a little hook shot in the paint.

Even after going No. 9 to the Memphis Grizzlies and playing well in a short stint in the Summer League, the doubters persisted. But now, after a dominant preseason performance – playing against legitimate NBA competition – Edey is finally starting to sway those same doubters.

Edey dropped 23 points with nine rebounds and one steal on 10-of-15 shooting in just 18 minutes of action, coming off the bench for the Grizzlies on Monday against the Pacers.

His otherworldly size, standing 7’4 and weighing 300 pounds, and remarkable durability forces opposing teams to adjust to his presence on the court, else he make quick work of defenders who can’t prevent him from catching the ball on the block.

Edey is also a quality free throw shooter who draws a ton of contact, and while he can be exploited in certain matchups defensively – his lateral mobility and incredible wingspan give him more of an advantage on that end of the floor than many realize.

The era of back-to-the-basket bigs dominating in the NBA – guys like Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, and Shaquille O’Neal – passed nearly two decades ago, replaced with versatile bigs who can also step out and space the floor and orchestrate an offense from the high post, a la Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Domantas Sabonis.

However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a spot at all for more traditional bigs, especially ones as skilled, durable, cerebral, and frankly, as huge as Edey is. On a team that has more mobile bigs in Jaren Jackson Jr and Brandon Clarke, Edey is a perfect change of pace big man who can dominate certain matchups while taking a backseat in others.

Edey is already the favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and in a draft class most felt was weak, it would not be a surprise to see the Purdue big man end up being the best player to come out of the class when all is said and done.

A Grizzlies veteran pulled off the funniest photo prank on an unsuspecting rookie teammate

What a perfect prank.

When you successfully pull off a hilarious and innocent prank, it is an accomplishment. Memphis Grizzlies wing John Konchar did exactly that.

Konchar, 28, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Grizzlies in 2019. He has carved out a nice place as a role player in the pros, earning a spot on the roster in Memphis. Now a veteran, he took it upon himself to introduce a rookie teammate to life in the NBA.

That teammate, Jaylen Wells from Washington State University, was selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. He joins a Memphis rookie class highlighted by two-time national collegiate player of the year Zach Edey and NCAA champion Cam Spencer.

Konchar saw Wells in public and pretended that he was just a fan of the Grizzlies, creating an iconic photo in the process.

He shared how he pulled off a hilarious joke without Wells recognizing him:

“I see him at a Cordelia’s. [I’m] with my girlfriend at the time and I’m just like hey. I’m going to go up to him. I’ve never met him yet. I wasn’t in Vegas or anything. I haven’t met him yet. I see him over there. I’m like hey. I’m going to ask him for a picture and see if he recognizes me. Like, follow me and take a picture. So I go up to him and I’m like: Hey, I’m John. I’m a huge Grizzlies fan. Can I please take a picture with you? I shook his hand and everything. So my girlfriend is behind me just taking a picture and I’m like dude I appreciate it. Good luck this season. And we just walk away.”

Wells added some context:

“I took the picture and I walked around the corner and the cashier came up to me and said: Do you know who you just took a picture with? And I’m like: John. He told me his name is John. And then he was like, no, that’s your teammate, John Konchar. I was like, that makes sense. That makes a lot of sense. Because it was slightly awkward when we took the picture. Something was up.”

The rookie added that his locker is now directly next to Konchar’s.

What a perfect prank.

Former Tar Heel Armando Bacot finds new home in NBA

This former UNC superstar signed an NBA contract with this franchise.

One of the most prolific big men to dawn the Carolina blue in the last decade is headed to the NBA. After going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, center Armando Bacot has signed a 10-day exhibition contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

This contract will guarantee a one-year deal at the NBA minimum and has the opportunity to transition to a two-way contract before the start of the regular season which is on October 22, 2024.

Bacot was one of the best big men UNC basketball has ever seen. He spent five years with the Tar Heels averaging 14.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in his last season. He finished averaging a double-double for his collegiate career at 13.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

https://Twitter.com/JacobTurnerTHI/status/1832101898096407003

Bacot spent time in the Summe League over the last couple of months with the Utah Jazz. He had several games during the summer with 8+ points and 6+ rebounds in a limited minute span. After his 10-day contract with the Jazz expired, he was let go.

This time around, hopefully, Bacot has found his NBA home.
