Notre Dame coach Max Bullough reveals how they’ll use the linebacker this fall

The more the merrier

It’s always a good problem to have too many quality players at one position, and it looks like that will be the case for Notre Dame football and its linebackers.

In a social media post by Tyler Horka, Irish linebackers coach [autotag]Max Bullough[/autotag] explained how he’ll go about using his group this fall. He did use some expletive language, but said “We’re not doing 1’s and 2’s… 1’s and 2’s is a f****** practice thing… we’re getting ready to play a game.”

Long story short, Bullough plans on rotating five members of his unit during games this fall. There is no doubt that the Irish have plenty of depth at the position.

We will most likely see a lot of Jack Kiser, Jaylen Sneed, Drayk Bowen, Jaiden Ausberry and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa. Those are extremely good options to have.

Watch Notre Dame Linebackers Coach Max Bullough Mic’d Up at Practice

Talk about a hands on approach…

There are coaches that are hands on and then there is flat-out hands coaching.

Notre Dame linebackers coach [autotag]Max Bullough[/autotag] is clearly part of the later.

Bullough, who was on the Cleveland Browns roster as recently as 2018, has climbed the coaching ladder since getting into the profession.  After being a graduate assistant at Cincinnati and Alabama from 2019-2022, Bullough came to Notre Dame in 2023 in the same role.

This past off-season he was promoted to linebackers coach in a reshuffling of assistants after safeties coach Chris O’Leary left for a job with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bullough was mic’d up at a recent Notre Dame spring practice.  It wasn’t as much as what he had to say while coaching that gets your attention, instead it’s about how he does it and that’s by being as hands-on as one possibly can.

See for yourself below:

Bullough was listed at 6-3, 249-pounds during his playing days and it’s safe to say the former Michigan State standout hardly appears to look any different than his playing days.

Not that it doesn’t happen on plenty of other staffs across the country but this approach absolutely has to be a selling point if you’re a star high school linebacker trying to make your college choice.

Former Michigan State football LB Max Bullough joining Notre Dame coaching staff

A former Michigan State football team captain is joining the Notre Dame coaching staff

A former Michigan State football team captain is joining the Notre Dame coaching staff. On Tuesday, it was announced that the Irish are naming Max Bullough as their new Linebackers Coach.

Bullough playing in 53 games as a Spartan, recording 299 tackles, eight sacks and three interceptions while being named to the All-Big Ten First Team in 2013. Bullough worked as a graduate assistant for Notre Dame last season.

Notre Dame officially introduces its new linebackers coach

The Irish staff is complete with this hire

The Notre Dame football staff is now complete with the announcement of the final open position on Tuesday.

[autotag]Max Bullough[/autotag], the former Michigan State star, was officially named as the linebackers coach. He spent this past season as a graduate assistant, but clearly showed enough to head coach Marcus Freeman that he was ready to be elevated to a full-time position.

Since retiring from the NFL in 2018, Bullough has been a graduate assistant at Cincinnati, Alabama and then in South Bend. While with the Crimson Tide, he helped them win the 2022 College Football Playoff championship, so the winning experience is there.

Bullough’s grandfather played for the Irish along with his uncle. Although he didn’t play for Notre Dame, Blue and Gold still runs through his veins.

Notre Dame lands 2024 linebacker recruit Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa

Solid get for the Irish.

Notre Dame just beat out two real blue bloods for the services of 2024 four-star linebacker recruit [autotag]Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa[/autotag]. On July 3, the Bellflower, California native announced that the Irish had made his final cut along with USC and Ohio State. After nearly three weeks of additional waiting, the recruiting efforts of [autotag]Al Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Max Bullough[/autotag] have paid off. Viliamu-Asa made the announcement on social media:

Here’s how the actual announcement looked from his home:

Viliamu-Asa is the third linebacker commit of the Irish’s 2024 class. The others, [autotag]Teddy Rezac[/autotag] and [autotag]Bodie Kahoun[/autotag], are three-star commits, which makes Vilamu-Asa the biggest get at the position in the 2024 class so far. Greg Biggins of 247Sports had this to say about him in November:

“One of the most versatile linebackers in the country. He’s an inside ‘backer but a rare every down player who can move around and play multiple spots in a defense. He can stuff the run, blitz off the edge and is very smooth in coverage for a 6-foot-3, 230 pound athlete. He was the state’s top prospect as a freshman but tore his ACL in the final game of the season and missed his entire sophomore year. He’s a huge hitter and has a game built for pads but we saw him during 7v7 play lock up receivers and tight ends in coverage. He’s a smart kid as well, very instinctive and plays with a non-stop motor. He’s a tough kid and has a nice edge in his game.”

Here’s hoping that all is on display with the Irish.

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel calls Max Bullough one of the smartest players he’s ever coached

In one of the more random but awesome clips you will watch today, a former Michigan State football team captain got a big time shout-out this week from Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel on a podcast.

Vrabel, who appeared on a Barstool Sports podcast this week, was asked who the smartest player he has ever coached was. Vrabel’s first answer was Ben Jones, but then he immediately followed up with Max Bullough, the former MSU linebacker who he coached with the Houston Texans, and spent some time explaining what made Bullough so special.

Former Michigan State Football LB Max Bullough lands graduate assistant position at Alabama

Michigan State football alum Max Bullough will be heading to Alabama as a defensive graduate assistant.

[jwplayer RJySF4hX]

After spending last season as an assistant under Luke Fickell (yes, that Luke Fickell) at the University of Cincinnati, former Michigan State Football middle linebacker Max Bullough will be heading down to Alabama to act as a defensive graduate assistant under Nick Saban. This is a huge win for Bullough as the position is one of the most highly sought after in the country.

Bullough ended his career at Michigan State with an untimely suspension and entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans in 2014. After three seasons with the Texans, he was suspended for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances which led to him being released by Houston.

He spent a few months with the Cleveland Browns in 2018 before being released on April 12, 2018. After spending last season with the Bearcats, Bullough has now landed one of the most coveted graduate assistant roles in the country and this could be a fresh start in a new career in coaching for Bullough.
