WATCH: Matthew McConaughey pumps up Longhorn nation prior to Oklahoma game

HYPED.

The Longhorns are one sleep away from playing in what will be the most important game of the season.

No. 21 Texas will square off against their most hated rival, No. 6 Oklahoma, in the Red River Showdown on Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. CDT at the Cotton Bowl.

The Sooners are currently on a three-game win streak against the Longhorns, and are looking to regain some national respect as the team has not looked nearly as dominant as many thought they would.

Texas is obviously still looking to be “back”, and part of being back is beating Oklahoma and contending for the Big 12 title. With a win on Saturday, the Longhorns would surely fly up the polls and put themselves in good position to contend for a conference title for the first time since 2018.

The team and fan base are well aware of the implications that coincide with this game, which is why Texas’ minister of culture Matthew McConaughey delivered a hype video to Longhorn nation on Thursday.

This would be a critical win in Steve Sarkisian’s first season, and McConaughey is making sure that all of Longhorn nation is behind him and the team for the big game.

7 sports movies people wrongly think are rom-coms

Stop the madness, people.

We’ve all been there: It’s movie night with your friends or significant other and you’re in the mood for a classic sports flick. The problem is some of the most exceptional athletic feats ever captured on film have been carelessly categorized into another genre: The Rom-Com.

Listen, there’s nothing wrong with romantic comedies. I love the Holy Chrises — Evans, Hemsworth and Pine — and I LIVE for those celebrity-loaded movies where they juggle 12 different storylines only to tie it all together at the end. But it’s time for some of the best sports films of our generation to finally get the credit they deserve.

Texas brought in several former players for big recruiting weekend

Texas pulled out all the stops for the biggest recruiting weekend in program history.

This weekend has been full of pageantry and big names on the Forty Acres.

First-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff have made sure to pull out all the stops in order to host a group of what could be program-changing recruits.

The Texas football name is hot on the recruiting trail again, and this weekend the program looked to impress some of the biggest names in high school football.

Five-star quarterback Arch Manning headlined the group as he and his family toured the campus, along with some other five-star players such as 2022 linebacker Harold Perkins, 2023 wide receiver Jalen Hale, and 2023 running back Rueben Owens. One of the top 2023 wide receivers, Johntay Cook II, was seen catching passes from Manning on Saturday.

Here is a video of Manning’s 70+ yard pass to a streaking Cook.

Along with some gummy bears for Perkins, Texas made sure that some of the most elite alumni that walked through the Forty Acres were on sight in order to help showcase what being a Longhorn is about.

Some of those on sight included “Minister of Culture” and famous actor Matthew McConaughey, former players Vince Young, Jamaal Charles, Michael Huff and Earl Campbell. Take a look below to see the elite group.

This type of effort will likely impress recruits and possibly make them reconsider if they are already committed elsewhere, or it can put Texas in position to be the favorite of their recruitment.

For Texas to get a few commitments out of this weekend, it would be astronomical for the program and allow for them to build off this preseason success, with some in season success as well. Their 2022 recruiting class now sits at No. 8 in the nation according to 247Sports rankings, while the 2023 class is No. 2 in the nation with Owens as the lone commit.

The Longhorns are hoping this weekend changes that, and gives both classes a boost to the top.

Matthew McConaughey delivered NASCAR’s ‘start your engines’ command like only he could

“Alright, alright, alright…”

Matthew McConaughey served as the Grand Marshal for the NASCAR Cup Series first ever race at Circuit of The Americas on Sunday, and it was a perfectly quintessential Matthew McConaughey moment.

Sunday’s EchoPark Automotive Texas Grand Prix is a big race for the sport at COTA, the Austin road course which is known for hosting Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix. So it was fitting that the actor, Texas native and diehard Longhorns fan gave the command for drivers to start their engines — even if he did it virtually.

Of course, McConaughey opened with his catchphrase, “Alright, alright, alright,” before reciting a few poetic lines about NASCAR taking on the 3.41-mile long course, 20-turn course.

The Oscar-winning actor said:

“Alright, alright, alright. Yes, sir, yes, ma’am, this you already know: That’s three green lights — one, two, three in a row. You know, you’re ready, you know you want to go. Good thing the rubber is already on the road. Drivers, start your engines!”

This artistic command was actually the second time McConaughey’s been a Grand Marshal for NASCAR. He also gave the command at the 2005 Daytona 500.

Russell Wilson, Ciara to host COVID vaccine awareness special Sunday night

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara will host a COVID vaccine awareness special Sunday night on NBC.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson often says his catchphrase of “no time to sleep” and when he does, he often means it. The NFL may be several months away from kicking off, but the 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year winner’s charity knows no offseason.

Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccine television special on Sunday, April 18 called “Roll Up Your Sleeves.” The purpose will be to raise awareness for the vaccine, encourage Americans to get theirs when they can and to help combat misinformation regarding the vaccine.

The Wilson’s won’t be alone. They will be joined by a star-studded cast of hosts and guest speakers, such as President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle, Shaquille O’Neal, and even an interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci conducted by actor Matthew McConaughey, among others.

Russell Wilson clearly feels called to do his part to help people through the COVID-19 pandemic, and his work during the height of it was what helped him win the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. Wilson donated $1 million of his own wealth to Feeding America to help with food insecurity across the nation.

The “Roll Up Your Sleeves” special will air Monday night at 7:00 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.

Texas had a full section of Matthew McConaughey movie cutouts for TCU game

So many Matthew McConaugheys!

For No. 9 Texas’ home game against TCU on Saturday, Matthew McConaughey was in attendance. Well, sort of, because actually, several Matthew McConaugheys were in attendance, thanks to the Longhorns marketing team.

“Seated” in the stands at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium Saturday were several cutouts of McConaughey in character from a wide variety of his films, including Dazed and Confused, Interstellar, Angels in the Outfield, Dallas Buyers Club, The Wedding Planner, The Lincoln Lawyer and Magic Mike.

It’s a whole Matthew McConaughey section, and it’s spectacular and perfect for the Texas alumnus, one of the Longhorns most enthusiastic fans, who’s also the Minister of Culture, or MoC, for the athletics department.

This is genius, and more schools should consider filling their empty sections with famous alumni. And with partially empty stands because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a bunch of Matthew McConaugheys is… alright, alright, alright.

As a voiceover in the Longhorns’ clip showing off all the movie character cutouts, McConaughey says:

“Well, I don’t have many affiliations. I’ve got God, I’ve got my family, I got America, and I got Texas. This is one of those things that’s nonnegotiable for me wherever I go.”

The fabulous Matthew McConaughey section was also briefly featured on ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast Saturday.

In 2019, the Oscar-winning actor was GameDay’s best guest picker of the season, and, of course, he went all out for Texas.

On Friday, the social media team for the Texas Longhorns showcased a whole section of cutouts for the Minister of Culture.

The landscape of sports has changed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many schools and teams have opened up the opportunity for fans to purchase a cutout to be placed in the stands. Texas allowed fans to purchase their cutouts for the price of $50. Even Oklahoma Sooners fans purchased some to be placed at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. That brings the rivalry to another level.

Matthew McConaughey says Redskins ‘needed to make a change’; excited for future success

Redskins superfan Matthew McConaughey is a fan of where the program is going and he thinks team is close to re-entering ‘conversation’ again

We caught a glimpse of it recently when he tweeted his approval of the Washington Redskins selection of Chase Young with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but we now know for sure — Redskins superfan Matthew McConaughey is happy where things are headed in Washington.

Not only is he excited about the future for the Redskins, but he is happy to see that a shake-up was offered this offseason, getting new leadership in the building.

“I like where we’re heading,” McConaughey said, via Redskins.com. “We’ve needed to make a change, and I think we’re really now on our way.”

McConaughey is reportedly friends with team owner Dan Snyder, and the two have been seen together at FedEx Field before several games. He’s also a fan of the Ron Rivera hiring, and he thinks it could take the team back to relevancy again in the near future.

“This is a chance for us to get back in that conversation,” McConaughey said. “We are now saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to build a dynasty again’…and Hail Redskins.”

If the team is able to make good on this new trajectory and eventually get back into the conversation of good teams in the NFL, expect more superfans to pop up alongside McConaughey, as #HTTR flags start to wave.
