Matthew McConaughey’s Tequila Pantalones is (sigh) alright, alright, alright

It won’t blow you away, but it’s smooth, simple and flavorful for $45 a bottle.

Welcome back to FTW’s Beverage of the Week series. Here, we mostly chronicle and review beers, but happily expand that scope to any beverage (or food) that pairs well with sports. Yes, even cookie dough whiskey.

There’s no hotter trend amongst celebrities than creating their own flagship liquor. And in that subset, there’s no spirit hotter than tequila.

Everyone from George Clooney to The Rock to Guy Fieri has thrown their hat in the ring when it comes to baking and distilling agave. This has led to some hits, some misses and what I can only assume are truckloads of money, given the sheer amount of music, movie and other stars in the lineup.

This was too much for Matthew McConaughey to pass up. Admittedly, he didn’t sound entirely jazzed about the product — he’s quoted in the press release accompanying the booze’s debut as saying “the world doesn’t need another celebrity tequila.” But the world didn’t need a Vince Vaughn season of True Detective either and McConaughey had executive producer credits on that, so here we are.

Anyway, Tequila Pantalones, from McConaughey and his wife Camila, is distilled in the same place as Tres Agaves. Does it bring anything new to the table, or is it just a cash grab? Let’s find out.

Pantalones tequila reposado : B

The smell off the top of the pour is sweet and salty. There’s enough agave there to let you know you’re dealing with a tequila, but enough fruit, spice and … a little butter (?) to let you know it’s a decent one.

That sweetness is the first thing that hits your lips. It lingers throughout the sip, making it the headline even after it’s cleared your throat. That brings a certain softness to the whole affair. You’d think that would be to counteract a harsh, boozy burn but, nope. There’s the obvious warmth of an 80 proof spirit, but nothing that would make you wince.

As such, it’s pretty solid as a sipper or a shooter. It’s a mellow reposado that isn’t especially complex but brings elements of the barrel aging that got us here. There’s a little vanilla, some oak and just enough tropical fruit to reward you for sticking with it.

It’s not gonna wow you, but you’ll enjoy each sip. At $45 per bottle, that’s a decent value. Maybe not perfect — I’d like it a lot more at $10 cheaper — but you won’t be disappointed.

Would I drink it instead of a Hamm’s?

This is a pass/fail mechanism where I compare whatever I’m drinking to my baseline cheap beer. That’s the standby from the land of sky-blue waters, Hamm’s. So the question to answer is: on a typical day, would I drink Pantalones tequila over a cold can of Hamm’s?

Yeah, I’d mix in a glass or two before moving on to beer. It’s tasty enough as a sipper or in a cocktail.

McConaughey scolds ‘Not Cool’ Texas student section for bottle throwing

‘Minister of Culture’ Matthew McConaughey lectures UT student section over bottle throwing at Georgia game.

Saturday night at DKR didn’t quite go as Chris Del Conte and Jay Hartzell had envisioned when they planned the move to the Southeastern Conference a few years ago. While their goal was to create electric, high-stakes games with an intense atmosphere that embodies the SEC’s “It Just Means More” mentality, the evening took an unexpected turn — off the field — that resulted in a $250,000 fine for Texas.

I won’t dive into the stats breakdown of the game — you can find that analysis here — but what I want to address is the Texas student section’s unfortunate reaction during the match.

Frustration boiled over when an interception by the Longhorns was briefly nullified by a pass interference penalty, sparking upsetting reactions from fans at DKR. Fans, particularly in the north end zone, began throwing water bottles and other debris onto the field in protest as the officials reviewed and eventually overturned the call.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian quickly intervened, making his way to the opposite 10-yard line to directly address the north endzone. With a simple yet firm plea — “Stop, stop” — he urged fans to halt the disruptive behavior, following up with a grateful “Thank you.” Meanwhile, over two dozen Texas staff members rushed onto the field to clear the debris as the game continued.

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey and conference staff were present at DKR Stadium on Saturday, where the SEC issued a statement upholding the officiating crew’s decision to overturn a penalty.

On Sunday morning, the conference addressed the incident involving the student section, mandating that Texas use all available resources—including security, stadium surveillance, and television footage—to identify individuals who threw objects onto the field. Those found responsible will be banned from attending Texas athletics events for the remainder of the 2024-25 academic year, and the university must review its alcohol availability policies.

The SEC also reminded Texas that it has the authority to suspend the school’s alcohol privileges under league bylaws, though it has chosen not to do so at this time.

“The throwing of debris and the resulting interruption of play that occurred Saturday night cannot be tolerated at any SEC event,” Commissioner Sankey said in a statement. “The SEC is tasked with enforcing sportsmanship and game management policies, and these actions align with that responsibility, including the financial penalty and mandated reviews.”

Shortly after the SEC issued its statement, University of Texas President Jay Hartzell responded, condemning the behavior of students who threw debris onto the field. “Throwing debris onto the field for any reason, including displeasure with an officiating call, poses a safety risk and is entirely unacceptable,” Hartzell said. “A sizable number of our students endangered others and embarrassed Longhorn Nation by throwing bottles and trash. These actions created a poor impression on our new SEC colleagues, including Georgia, and damaged the university’s reputation on a national stage.”

Head Coach Steve Sarkisian echoed the sentiments of UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife, President Hartzell, and Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, who released a joint statement condemning the behavior and issuing apologies. Sarkisian, who was critical of the actions following the game, reinforced his stance on Monday. “I know that we’ve got a passionate fanbase, and I think that showed Saturday night,” Sarkisian said. “We don’t want that to be the narrative that that’s what DKR is all about. It was too good of a football game for that to be the focal point of it all. I think in the end they got it [the penalty reversal] right.”

University of Texas’ “Minister of Culture,” Matthew McConaughey, addressed Longhorn Nation on social media Monday, weighing in on the incident that continued to draw attention into the new college football week. Posting on Twitter, McConaughey called the students’ behavior “not cool” and a “bogey move,” reminding fans that “Longhorn Nation is better than that.”

McConaughey, who graduated from Texas in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in Radio, TV, and Film, has been a prominent figure in the university’s culture. He was named “Minister of Culture” in 2019 and has since taught several courses at Texas, often referred to as one of Texas’s most prominent alumni.

Texas students who threw objects onto the field are facing significant repercussions, with their Big Ticket privileges likely to be revoked for the remainder of the academic year. However, it remains unclear whether additional penalties will be imposed. Despite rumors circulating that students have already received messages informing them of their ban, a university spokesperson confirmed to beat writers that no such actions have been taken yet.

According to the source, the university has not made any official decisions but has been advised by the SEC to take all necessary measures to address the incident. For now, the students remain in limbo. There’s no set timeline for a decision, but with the next home game at DKR not until November 9th, there’s still time. Meanwhile, the Longhorns will head to Vanderbilt, looking to improve their 2-1 conference record and settle tensions within the SEC.

Texas superfan Matthew McConaughey was not alright, alright, alright on the Longhorns’ sidelines

A rough night for the Longhorns fan.

Matthew McConaughey, as you may know, is a huge Texas superfan, rooting on the Longhorns over the years and providing many a priceless reaction to their football teams.

And he didn’t disappoint on Monday — the actor was there on the sidelines with Texas players, and cameras showed him interacting with a few of them in the middle of the College Football Playoff semifinal against Washington.

But with the Huskies claiming victory, it was a rough one for McConaughey. He went through the gamut of emotions, including on the final play, and kept it classy in a post on X (formerly Twitter) after the loss:

Matthew McConaughey’s priceless analysis after Texas’ big first-half touchdown on Alabama was amazing

Matthew McConaughey’s excited reaction to this Texas touchdown was more than alright, alright, alright.

The No. 11 Texas Longhorns didn’t let the task of playing at No. 3 Alabama keep them from getting off to a hot start on Saturday night.

The Longhorns entered halftime with a 13-6 lead over the Crimson Tide, with Texas superfan Matthew McConaughey standing right by the field for the night’s big game with ESPN2’s broadcast crew.

The big play of the first half was undoubtedly Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers’ 44-yard bomb to Xavier Worthy that notched the game’s first touchdown.

McConaughey got immediately hyped up for the major Longhorns score as he provided some priceless analysis of how the big score went down.

I mean, you really can’t ask for more than that if you’re a Texas fan. McConaughey is one of the team’s most notable fans, and to have him in Tuscaloosa for such a monumental game is cool enough as it is.

To have him going wild on the sideline for your big touchdown?

That’s more than alright, alright, alright.

Yellowstone is wrapping up in the fall, and a sequel series is already in works

Yellowstone fans will finally get to see how the show wraps up in November.

Yellowstone fans will finally get to see how the story of John Dutton wraps up when the show returns for its final episodes in November.

Paramount announced on Friday that the back half of Yellowstone‘s season five will air in the fall, reportedly actor Kevin Costner’s last ride as patriarch John Dutton in the Yellowstone universe.

Season five will conclude the original Yellowstone show and lead into a sequel series created by longtime show architect Taylor Sheridan, Paramount confirmed.

The Yellowstone sequel series will premiere in December, which Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has been linked to as its star. It’s unknown if any characters from the original Yellowstone series will jump over to the sequel project, however it’ll reportedly continue the Dutton family story.

It was reported earlier this week that Coster would be exiting the program after reported off-set drama involving the actor and the show’s leadership bubbled up earlier this year. Coster’s attorney denied any friction on the actor’s behalf.

The last episode in season five’s first half aired on Jan. 1. No firm date in November has been set for the show’s remaining episodes, and production has not yet started. Further delays are always possible.

Could Commanders’ fan Matthew McConaughey still be in the mix as a minority owner?

The longtime Washington fan said in November he wanted to join the bidding on the Commanders.

Jeff Bezos is likely out as a potential owner of the Washington Commanders. Teddy Schleifer of The Puck broke the original story Wednesday that Bezos was not expected to bid on the Commanders. Others, such as The Washington Post and ESPN, also confirmed those reports.

Before Schleifer’s report on Wednesday, he also confirmed that hip-hop mogul Jay-Z and iconic actor — and noted Washington superfan — Matthew McConaughey were not part of a prospective Bezos’ bid. In his Tuesday story on the Washington sale, Schleifer said the following regarding Jay-Z:

I’ve recently learned that Jay-Z was never a part of Bezos’s campaign, at least not in any formal capacity, despite earlier reporting that the two would “put in an official joint bid to purchase the team in January.” It’s possible that the general topic came up in conversation at their two-hour Los Angeles dinner, as chronicled by paparazzi last November, but the mini-mogul was at no point involved in any prospective bid, I’m informed.

On McConaughey:

I’m similarly told that McConaughey, a longtime friend of Snyder’s who had been reportedly “joining” the Bezos campaign, has been talking for months to potential Commanders buyers—including Bezos—but he has never been committed to Bezos, specifically.

McConaughey is a friend of Washington owner Dan Snyder and has been to games in the past as a special guest. He’s been outspoken about wanting to be part of the next ownership group of the Commanders. And, according to Schleifer, it’s not out of the question that McConaughey shows up as a part of Josh Harris or Steve Apostolopoulos’s bids before the team is sold.

Harris, who is co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, is viewed as the frontrunner to be Washington’s next owner. Billionaire Mitchell Rales, a businessman and philanthropist, along with NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, are part of Harris’ bid. Could McConaughey join the Harris group next?

McConaughey isn’t the only celebrity Washington fan who has mentioned an interest in owning part of the Commanders. NBA superstar Kevin Durant, a Maryland native, has also mentioned the possibility.

With Bezos now out of the running [by his own choosing], could this be coming to a close soon?

Actor Glen Powell served as the celebrity guest picker the last time “College GameDay” was at Texas. Here is a look at other candidates to be the guest picker this go around.

Matthew McConaughey joining Jeff Bezos/Jay-Z in bid for Commanders

Longtime fan Matthew McConaughey is the latest name to join the Jeff Bezos/Jay-Z bid for the Washington Commanders.

Matthew McConaughey is arguably the most prominent celebrity fan of the Washington Commanders. McConaughey has been seen at Washington games over the years and is friendly with owner Daniel Snyder.

Now, McConaughey may have designs on being Washington’s next owner.

According to Sara Nathan and Michael Blinn of the New York Post, McConaughey is joining the team of Jeff Bezos and Jay-Z in their planned bid for the Commanders. Last week, the Commanders confirmed a report that they were exploring potential transactions, which included selling the franchise.

On Sunday, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported that the NFL wanted to fast-track Washington’s sale and believe it could be wrapped up in six months or by the NFL owner’s meetings in March.

The New York Post received the following quote from a source familiar with McConaughey’s thinking.

“Matthew has always been a huge fan and his ties with the team go way back,” the source sad. “They support his foundation and he’s good pals with Dan Snyder — he and [supermodel wife Camilla Alves] were on Dan’s yacht over the Super Bowl last year.”

McConaughey was always seen with Snyder when he chose to attend games, as was Tom Cruise.

The Post report also states that the Bezos/Jay-Z bid is expected to come in January.

McConaughey has long discussed his love of Washington, which he said began as a kid growing up in Texas. He loved hamburgers, and Washington linebacker Chris Hanburger’s name sounded like hamburger, so that was how he became a fan.

NBA superstar Kevin Durant, also a Washington fan, has mentioned he’d like to be included in the possible Bezos/Jay-Z bid.
