Patriots make multiple roster and practice squad moves

The Patriots made multiple roster moves

The New England Patriots were busy on Tuesday making multiple roster moves.

They announced the addition of center Sincere Haynesworth to the practice squad, along with the release of guard Jerome Carvin and Matt Landers. The team also released defensive end Jamree Kromah from the 53-man roster.

Kromah, who initially signed with the Chicago Bears as a rookie free agent, was inactive for three games for the Patriots, after being signed from the Bears’ practice squad.

One has to wonder if he’ll re-sign with the Patriots’ practice squad or end up back in Chicago at some point.

Meanwhile, Haynesworth, an undrafted rookie out of Tulane, is expected to add depth in the pipeline at the center position. Nick Leverett struggled last week helping to fill the void left by David Andrews, who is out with a season-ending shoulder injury.

There aren’t many options available to the Patriots, but that reality has led to an opportunity for Haynesworth.

Former Georgia wide receiver finds new NFL home

Former UGA, Arkansas football wide receiver lands with the New England Patriots after the Cleveland Browns released him

A former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver has found a new home in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns released Matt Landers on Aug. 19. Shortly after his release, the New England Patriots claimed the former Georgia pass catcher on waivers.

Landers played at Georgia from 2017-2020, recording 10 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in 12 games during the 2019 season. His role decreased greatly in 2020, which prompted him to transfer to Toledo the following year.

In one season at Toledo, Landers recorded 20 catches for 514 yards and five touchdowns before spending his final year of eligibility at Arkansas. He led Arkansas in receiving that season, recording 47 catches for 901 yards and eight touchdowns.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver split time on the practice squads of the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers in 2023. At the combine in 2023, he recorded a 4.37 40-yard dash. Landers also had a short stint in the UFL with the San Antonio Brahmas in 2024.

Now, he will try to gain some traction with the Patriots, who play their preseason finale against the Washington Commanders on Aug. 25.

Patriots place rookie receiver on IR, announce replacement signing

The Patriots announced two offensive roster moves on Tuesday

The New England Patriots announced they are placing rookie wideout JaQuae Jackson on injured reserve after he was carted off the field due to an injury sustained in last week’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a corresponding move, the team also announced the signing of former Cleveland Browns receiver Matt Landers.

The former undrafted free agent spent time on practice squads for the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers before moving on to the Arlington Renegades and San Antonio Brahmas in the UFL.

Landers signed with the Browns in May and was ultimately claimed off waivers by a Patriots team that needed another camp body after losing Jackson. He has yet to play an offensive snap in the NFL.

Along with the moves on offense, the Patriots also announced they had signed defensive players Kobe Jones and Christian McCarroll. The Patriots are clearly filling out their roster before the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

After that game, they’ll begin the arduous task of cutting their roster down to 53 players.

Landers is listed at 6 feet, 4 inches and 200 pounds. He was previously on the practice squads of both the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers in 2023. At the combine in 2023, he recorded a 4.37 40-yard dash, reflecting exceptional athletic ability that has not always been matched by production.

Browns sign WR Matt Landers as OTAs get set to begin

The Browns have made another roster move

The Cleveland Browns have made another roster move. After waiving quarterback Jacob Sirmon and signing kicker Lucas Havrisik yesterday, the Browns have now added a new wide receiver in Matt Landers.

Landers is most known for his time at the University of Arkansas, where he racked up 900 yards and eight touchdowns his senior season. Before that, he did a short stint at the University of Toledo after two seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs.

At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Landers runs a blazing 4.37 40-yard dash with excellent explosiveness as well. He hit 37 inches in his vertical jump and nearly 11 feet in his broad jump.

Since leaving college, Landers has been on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers and did stints in the UFL with both the Arlington Renegades and San Antonio Brahmas.

Likely just a camp body, Landers will, however, have a chance to fight his way onto the practice squad in Cleveland.

The Panthers brought back QB Jake Luton to their practice squad on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers made a few moves to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Coming in, or coming back in, is quarterback Jake Luton. The 27-year-old passer was released from the group this past Thursday, when the team had to make room for guard Deonte Brown.

Luckily for Luton, there’s now room for him and his third stint on Carolina’s practice squad this season. His first run ended back on Sept. 26—when the division rival New Orleans Saints, this weekend’s opponents, poached him to their active roster.

Luton, a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has played three regular-season games in his NFL career—all of which came during his rookie season. He appeared in two of the Panthers’ preseason contests this past summer, where he completed eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Panthers, additionally, cleared a bit more space on the practice squad—releasing wide receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas.

Carolina signed Landers to its practice squad after the New Orleans Saints signed quarterback Jake Luton off the Panthers’ practice squad. Carolina needs help at the wide receiver position, so it is a great opportunity for Landers.

Landers spent three seasons at Georgia before transferring to Toledo. He transferred to Arkansas for his final college season.

Landers had a brief stint on Seattle’s practice squad.

On Tuesday, the New Orleans Saints poached the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad—signing quarterback Jake Luton to their active roster. So, there was a spot left to fill.

And it didn’t take long for the Panthers to address that vacancy, adding wideout Matt Landers—who was one of five players to work out for the team earlier in the day.

Here—with Luton out and the 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver now onboard—is an updated look at Carolina’s 16-man practice squad:

Panthers signing WR Matt Landers to practice squad

After losing QB Jake Luton to the Saints, the Panthers are signing 6-foot-4 WR Matt Landers to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers couldn’t get the win in Seattle this past Sunday. That, however, didn’t stop them from taking back a piece of the Seahawks with them . . . well, sorta.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Tuesday evening, the team is signing wide receiver Matt Landers to their practice squad. Landers was a member of the Seahawks’ practice squad up until this past week, when he was released on Sept. 20.

The St. Petersburg, Fla. native played his college career—which lasted from 2017 to 2022—between the University of Georgia, the University of Toledo and the University of Arkansas. Over four seasons, he reeled in a total of 79 receptions for 1,547 yards and 14 touchdowns.

An intriguing prospect at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds and a 40-yard time of 4.37 seconds, Landers signed with the Seahawks after going undrafted this past spring. He’d go on to record three catches, 40 yards and a touchdown during preseason play.

Landers was one of five players to work out for the Panthers on Tuesday. He will now fill the vacancy on the practice squad left behind by quarterback Jake Luton, who was signed by the New Orleans Saints.
