Scott Fitterer hopes to get Matt Corral on Panthers’ practice squad

Like Frank Reich, Panthers GM Scott Fitterer is hoping to get Matt Corral back in the building.

Scott Fitterer and Frank Reich share the same sentiment about what was perhaps their most high-profile cut of the summer.

The Carolina Panthers general manager spoke to reporters this morning, fresh off the week’s flurry of moves. Among the fourth wave of departures, which took place after the initial 53-man roster was set, was quarterback Matt Corral—who Fitterer hopes to get back.

“It was a tough decision,” he said. “I like Matt as a person. Any time you have a guy that you take and bring in and you’re developing and you see progress—it’s tough.”

On Wednesday, the Panthers claimed a trio of players off waivers—offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, linebacker Claudin Cherelus and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison. Corral was one of the three corresponding moves to make room, along with wide receiver Derek Wright and linebacker Chandler Wooten.

If Corral goes unclaimed, which we’ll know by 4 p.m. ET today, the Panthers could sign him back as a member of the practice squad—which currently (and officially) carries 11 members.

Fans react to Panthers waiving Matt Corral

On Wednesday, the Panthers waived 2022 third-round pick Matt Corral. Here’s how their fans reacted to the move:

On Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers made room for some new additions by waiving three players—including 2022 third-round pick Matt Corral.

Here’s how the team’s fans reacted to the news of what could be the end of a (very brief) era:

Frank Reich: I would love to get Matt Corral back

Panthers HC Frank Reich said he would love to get back Matt Corral, who was waived by the team on Wednesday.

Despite their best efforts in the preseason, the Carolina Panthers couldn’t sell quarterback Matt Corral to another organization this week. So, they might just be buying back in.

On Wednesday, the team claimed three players off waivers—offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, linebacker Claudin Cherelus and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison. In order to make room for the trio, the Panthers had to cut ties with three of their own from the initial 53-man roster—and one of those men was Corral.

Head coach Frank Reich, however, is hoping to get the 24-year-old passer back.

“We’re happy with the progress Matt made,” he told reporters following this afternoon’s practice. “As we’ve talked about, the whole offseason—there’s a lot of complexities, a lot of moving parts puttin’ together a roster. Everybody understands that the sole motivation is to do what’s best for the team. We’re tryin’ to get as many players on the roster, in that locker room, on the 53 and on the practice squad as we can that can help us win this year. Those are tough decisions.

“I don’t mind saying I would love to get Matt back. We think he’s done very well. Would like to see him continue to progress.”

Corral was selected by Matt Rhule’s Panthers in the third round of the 2022 draft, a move heavily inspired by former offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. The Ole Miss star, however, saw his rookie campaign end prematurely—as he sustained a season-ending Lisfranc injury during the summer.

This summer was a much healthier one for Corral, who completed 28 of his 47 passing attempts for 249 yards and an interception.

If he clears waivers by tomorrow, Corral will be eligible to sign back as part of Carolina’s practice squad.

4 most intriguing players on the Panthers’ roster bubble entering cutdowns

A number of recent draft picks are amongst the most intriguing players on the Panthers’ roster bubble.

With the NFL requiring that teams cut 37 players from their roster by Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers will face a series of tough decisions at multiple positions. And those tough decisions will involve quite a few intriguing talents.

Here are the four most interesting players fighting for the opportunity to stay on the roster:

Here is our final projection of the program:

Studs and duds from Panthers’ preseason loss to Lions

Bryce Young and Adam Thielen sparked a little magic in Friday’s preseason loss to the Lions.

The Carolina Panthers capped off the preseason with their third loss in as many outings. And while there are presumably some duds in the defeat, there were some notable studs from the 26-17 result as well.

Let’s run through them all.

4 most intriguing Panthers to watch in Friday’s preseason finale vs. Lions

Matt Corral will have one last chance to prove he’s worth a roster spot, for either the Panthers or another potentially interested party.

Which Carolina Panthers should you be focusing on in the team’s 2023 preseason finale?

Here are four players who should be of particular interest on Friday night:

Frank Reich ‘feels good’ about Matt Corral’s growth

Panthers HC Frank Reich feels good about the steps QB Matt Corral has taken this summer.

Matt Corral is giving head coach Frank Reich and the Carolina Panthers something to think about.

During his talk with reporters on Sunday afternoon, Reich was asked about what could potentially factor into keeping Corral on the 53-man roster. And even though they’re set at the first two spots with No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young and veteran Andy Dalton, the 2022 third-round pick has a few things working in his favor.

“Every decision, as we say, is multi-factorial,” Reich replied. “Premium on that position. You like to be able to develop guys. I think Matt’s done a good job and has continued to develop. So, feel good about the steps he’s taken.”

Corral has also taken the most snaps of any Panthers quarterback this preseason. Over his 69 total looks, he’s completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 197 yards and an interception.

While an odd man out of sorts, the 24-year-old has previously stated his desire to remain in Carolina. If he isn’t, however, a fit for the final cuts—the Panthers could look to sell off Corral to a quarterback-needy club interested in bringing him along.

But, given his less-than-stellar showings in the summer and the team’s apparent desire to develop a youngster at the premium position, Corral’s wish may be met.
