Ex-Bills punter Matt Araiza speaks on prosecutors’ findings

Ex-#Bills punter Matt Araiza speaks on prosecutors’ findings:

Former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Araiza has broken his silence for the first time since being accused in a rape case last year.

In August 2022, Araiza was accused in a civil lawsuit. Only days later, Araiza was released by the Bills. The initial report  only broke a few days after he was named the team’s starting punter.

In December 2022, San Diego officials announced Araiza would not be charged.

That leads up to this week as prosecutors have gone on to state their reason for not charging Araiza for the first time. It was announced that an investigation concluded that Araiza was not at the scene of the alleged incident, which also included witness testimony.

Via statement to Pro Football Talk, Araiza thanked the work of the San Diego District Attorney’s Office for his exoneration.

That full release can be found below:

“I am aware that the facts of this case have been made public. I am deeply gratified for the thorough work of the DA’s office in San Diego and for all the witnesses that were willing to come forward and tell the truth.  I am thankful that the facts of this case as provided by the witnesses will prove that what I have been saying from the beginning is, in fact, the truth.

“I can only hope that now people will assess me on the facts and not what was falsely claimed in both the civil suit and in the press.

“I am beyond thankful for the unwavering support of both my family and friends.  They have been a rock in what has been a very dark eight months for me.  However, now that the truth is out, I am amazed by the thousands of emails and tweets supporting me.  It has truly been a blessing to know so many people have now judged me by the facts.”

10 best remaining free agents the Eagles could target after NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft is complete, and Philadelphia’s roster is stacked, but we’re looking at the10 best remaining free agents the Eagles could target

The 2023 NFL draft is in the books, and Philadelphia Eagles have welcomed five new drafted rookies to the roster while working to sign an undrafted free agent class.

Now, the third wave of free agency is underway, and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has an opportunity to address some positions that still need attention following the draft.

Philadelphia is stacked on both sides of the football but could look for depth at edge rusher, punter, tight end, and linebacker.

With the draft complete, all free-agent signings will no longer count against the compensatory formula, so we could start seeing some teams making moves.

Here’s a look at some of the best available free agents the Eagles could target in this third wave of free agency:

Former Bills P Matt Araiza does not sign in Mexico after all

Nevermind:

Turns out Matt Araiza is actually not back playing football again.

Last week, it was reported that the former Buffalo Bills punter, who was released amid gang-rape allegations last offseason had signed with Galgos de Tijuana of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional in Mexico.

Not only that, the team itself also posted to social media that Araiza joined Tijuana.

An update now says otherwise.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Araiza’s agent told him that the punter did not sign with the Mexican team. Instead, he remains a free agent and is hoping for a NFL opportunity.

Adding to the twist: Tijuana has not taken down the post which indicates he joined the club:

Araiza was a sixth-round pick of the Bills at the 2022 NFL draft. On Aug. 25 shortly after the team awarded Araiza the starting punting job, the allegation surfaced and he was released only days later.

Since then, Araiza had initially and continues to maintain innocence and in December the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced Araiza and none of his former teammates would be charged.

A trail for a civil suit is scheduled for October.

Nicknamed the “Punt God” in college for his booming kicks at the college level, Araiza has yet to have any connection to any NFL club since being released by the Bills–but he clearly remains hopeful.

Araiza’s controversial stay in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills is well noted.

He was a sixth-round pick of the team at the 2022 NFL draft. On Aug. 25 shortly after the team awarded Araiza the starting punting job, he was accused of being part of a gang raping of a 17-year-old girl while he attended San Diego State, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Days later, Buffalo released him. Araiza had initially and continues to maintain innocence and in December the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced Araiza and none of his former teammates would be charged.

A trail for a civil suit is scheduled for October.

Nicknamed the “Punt God” in college for his booming kicks at the college level, Araiza has yet to have any connection to any NFL club since being released by the Bills.

The Eagles suffered a critical injury at the punter position and the team already has a replacement at the NovaCare Complex on a visit.

5 punters the Eagles could target after Arryn Siposs suffered leg injury against Giants

We’re looking at five punters that the Philadelphia Eagles could have an interest in adding to the roster after Arryn Siposs suffered a lower leg injury against the Giants

The Eagles don’t have many weaknesses, but Punter Arryn Siposs has been a player to watch all season, and things could be heating up.

Siposs suffered a lower leg injury after trying to advance a blocked punt on Sunday and he’ll be out for an indefinite amount of time.

Here are five punters Philadelphia could have in for a tryout ahead of Sunday’s matchup at Chicago.

Buffalo Bills signing punter Sam Martin

The #Bills have a punter:

The Buffalo Bills have an answer at punter.

According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the team is signing Sam Martin.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Martin reportedly had a free-agent visit in Buffalo.

Martin was formerly with the Denver Broncos, who kept Corliss Waitman instead.

Per Broncos Wire, Denver asked Martin to take a pay cut. He declined and ended up in the free-agent pool.

Martin’s average salary of $2.35 million made him the 10th-highest-paid punter in the NFL with the Broncos. This year specifically, Martin was set to have the fourth-highest cap hit among punters in the NFL ($2,733,334).

The move also saved the Broncos $2.25M in salary cap space.

Terms of the contract Martin signed in Buffalo have yet to be announced.

Last year, Martin ranked third in the NFL in net punting average at 42.8 yards per punt. He tied for fifth in the league with 28 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Martin is brought in to replace former Bill Matt Araiza. The rookie punter was released on Saturday.

In a corresponding move, the Bills placed wide receiver Marquez Stevenson on injured reserve.

Buffalo cut their initial roster down to 53 players on Tuesday. However, the team did not roster a punter.

Stevenson going to IR frees a spot for Martin. Had Stevenson gone on the injury designation before free agency, his season would have been over. Going onto IR after roster cutdown day means Stevenson can return this season. He suffered a foot injury during training camp.

Report: Some NFL teams knew of Matt Araiza allegations before 2022 draft

Report: Some NFL teams knew of Matt Araiza allegations before 2022 draft:

The Buffalo Bills have claimed they did not know about allegations recently made in a lawsuit against former punter Matt Araiza prior to the 2022 NFL draft.

Reportedly other teams did.

According to the Associated Press, of five anonymous teams that were tapped for info, two were aware of the Araiza situation:

Over the weekend, the Bills released punter Araiza amid a backlash of criticism after the rookie was accused in a gang-rape lawsuit.

Buffalo selected Araiza in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. That came to the surprise of some draft onlookers because Araiza, nicknamed the “Punt God,” was once projected to potentially be the highest-ever selected punter. Instead, he wasn’t even the top one taken in his own draft as the earliest one went off the board as high as Round 4.

Reportedly the Bills did not find out about the accusations until late July. Even then, the team tabbed Araiza as their top punter, having released incumbent Matt Haack on Aug. 22.

Following Araiza’s release, Buffalo has yet to sign a new punter.
