Matisse Thybulle spray-painted his own mural as a heartfelt goodbye to Philadelphia

Well this was a cool way to say goodbye.

It’s so hard to say goodbye, but sometimes it must be done. And for a lot of NBA players, the trade deadline doesn’t leave much of a choice.

Matisse Thybulle was one of those players Thursday, traded by the only team he had ever played for during his four-year NBA career. The Philadelphia 76ers sent him to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a three-team deal, parting with their 2019 first-round pick whose role had been reduced this season.

Thybulle said goodbye to city of Philadelphia in the coolest way possible, tagging a mural of himself on a building with “Thank you Philly” and his signature.

The mural was painted in March 2021 by local artist Jimmy Glossblack. The Philadelphia Inquirer caught up with the owner of the building, a bar called Garage Fishtown, to get his thoughts.

“It’s such a sweet comment, and the response has been pretty loving towards Matisse,” Jason Evanchik said. “It was a nice little goodbye.”

Daryl Morey explains bringing in Jalen McDaniels, trading Matisse Thybulle

Daryl Morey explains why the Philadelphia 76ers traded Matisse Thybulle and acquired Jalen McDaniels on deadline day.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers made one move on Thursday when they sent Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in a four-team deal that included the Charlotte Hornets and the New York Knicks.

The Sixers acquired Jalen McDaniels and a 2024 second-round pick via the Knicks from the Hornets, and they acquired a 2029 second-round pick from the Blazers. That selection from Portland will be the most favorable among the Hawks’, Nets’ and Hornets’ second-round picks.

McDaniels, who is playing his fourth season, has been in the play-in tournament twice, but Charlotte lost both times. Given his lack of postseason experience, there are questions about how much he can help Philadelphia in the postseason.

“We looked at all options for the team and we really think Jalen’s sort of a hidden gem,” said team president Daryl Morey. “Sometimes when teams struggle that much, there are players in there that really need an opportunity to show what they can do on a better team. We feel Jalen’s a player like that. Obviously, we’ll see how he plays down the stretch going into the playoffs.”

McDaniels is averaging 10.6 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 32.2% from deep in the 2022-23 season for Charlotte. That 3-point percentage is a bit worse than Thybulle’s 33.3% shooting from deep, but McDaniels shot 38% in the 2021-22 season when LaMelo Ball was healthy for the Hornets.

“We spent a lot of time on that,” Morey added. “Obviously, shooting is you could argue half the game. Something around that. We spent a lot of time on which players will, in a different environment, shoot better. We feel comfortable. I think he’s had a little bit of a down year.”

Morey is feeling confident McDaniels will shoot better when playing next to a guy like James Harden.

“I don’t really stress about low-30s, high-30s, stuff like that,” Morey continued. “We look at this mix of shots, how open they are, how well they do if an average player got that same mix of shots and Jalen looks like, especially given his defensive prowess, he’ll be a solid shooter in this league.”

McDaniels does come with baggage. While in high school, he dealt with sexual misconduct lawsuits, but all of that is behind him. Morey is comfortable bringing him to Philadelphia.

“We do thorough research both on the floor and off,” Morey stated. “So we’re aware of that, and we felt comfortable making the trade.”

As for Thybulle, he heads off to Portland to continue his career. Morey explained why they moved the fourth-year player out of Washington.

“Some of it was just we think Jalen can really help and some of it was just the challenges of what’s to come, which is the wars in the playoffs,” Morey finished. “We think Jalen will be someone who can be easier for Doc (Rivers) to keep on the floor in tough times in the playoffs.”

Matisse Thybulle posts his goodbye to Sixers fans after trade to Blazers

Matisse Thybulle posts his goodbye to fans of the Philadelphia 76ers after being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Philadelphia 76ers made one trade before the deadline on Thursday when they sent Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in a four-team deal that brought them Jalen McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets.

Thybulle spent 3.5 seasons with the Sixers, becoming one of the top defenders in the league and wreaking havoc on opponents. His offensive game lagged behind his defensive abilities, but he was still a very useful player.

As Thybulle heads to the Blazers, he posted a video on his Instagram account to say goodbye to Sixers fans. It’s a video of him going to his mural in the Fishtown section of the city and writing “Thank you” with spray paint.

The Sixers will miss Thybulle and his defensive ability, but the hope is that McDaniels can do the same and provide some offense. McDaniels becomes a free agent in the offseason. The deal also brought the Sixers below the luxury tax line.

Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics knock off the Philadelphia 76ers at home in a rivalry matchup.

BOSTON–The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the rival Boston Celtics on Wednesday night in a big rivalry matchup on the night before the trade deadline and to also end a three-game road trip. This game offered a bit of a litmus test for the Sixers considering the Celtics are the No. 1 seed in the East.

Philadelphia started the game off well, but the Celtics battled back and eventually wore the Sixers down to win it 106-99. Jayson Tatum scored 12 points with nine assists and eight rebounds for Boston and they received a huge lift from Blake Griffin who had 15 points while making five triples.

Joel Embiid had 28 points and seven rebounds to lead the Sixers, James Harden added 26 points and 10 assists while De’Anthony Melton had 12. PJ Tucker added eight points while Tobias Harris had a rough night with four and four boards and Georges Niang had eight.

Report: Mavericks among teams interested in Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle

The Dallas Mavericks are among the team interested in acquiring Philadelphia 76ers forward Matisse Thybulle.

The NBA trade deadline is a little less than 24 hours away and there will be many reports and conversations leading to the 3 p.m. EST deadline on Thursday afternoon. Until then, there will be chaos.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been mentioned in trade reports as they try to upgrade the roster. The biggest issue for the Sixers is depth, particularly at center.

One of the names that have continued to float out there for Philadelphia is Matisse Thybulle. The defensive standout is in his fourth season with the team and is set to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. His name has been involved in numerous trade rumors.

The Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks expressed early interest in Thybulle. Per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, that list has grown substantially and includes the Dallas Mavericks:

The list includes the Hawks and Kings, per Marc Stein, and Warriors, according to Keith Pompey. Other teams who’ve called include the Pacers, Blazers, Bucks, Mavericks, Hornets, Raptors, and Suns, HoopsHype has learned.

The Mavericks pulled off a huge deal with the Brooklyn Nets to acquire Kyrie Irving. Considering they have two elite offensive players, they need defenders. That is what Thybulle can bring to that group if the Mavs were able to pull off a deal.

Tobias Harris gives advice to Matisse Thybulle, Sixers before deadline

Tobias Harris has advice for Matisse Thybulle and the Philadelphia 76ers on how to handle the trade deadline.

BOSTON — The Philadelphia 76ers are just over 24 hours away from the NBA trade deadline, and reports continue to swirl as they attempt to make moves to upgrade their roster for a title run.

Two names that have popped up the most for the Sixers are Matisse Thybulle and Furkan Korkmaz. Thybulle has been dangled to obtain more depth while Korkmaz has expressed a desire to play and be moved before the deadline.

Tobias Harris, who has been traded four times at the deadline and five times in his career, knows a thing or two about how to handle the deadline. He has some advice for Thybulle on how to deal with everything that comes with this time.

“Just stay in the moment of what you can control right now and be ready for whatever’s to come,” said Harris. “It’s the nature of the business and just the game of basketball. I always just tell him whatever’s to happen, you’re gonna be fine because you got yourself to this position by doing what you’ve been doing and just staying ready for whatever it is and if it’s here or elsewhere, you got to be ready for your opportunity and your moment. So that’s always my biggest advice.”

It can be tough to handle seeing their name in the headlines and the rumors that come with trade season.

“It’s for sure unsettling and nerve-wracking, but at the end of the day, if we’re being honest, you can’t do (expletive) about it,” Harris added. “If your name is in rumors, most time, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. All you can really do is control your own moment and where you are.”

For Thybulle and Korkmaz, they have their names in the headlines, but they also have to focus on the team and help them win basketball games as well. That is where the focus has to be at the moment.

“Nothing has happened as of yet, but if something does happen, then you gotta be ready for whatever situation it is,” Harris finished. “If it’s staying here, be ready for us to make a playoff run, or if it’s somewhere else, and you get opportunity, just taking full advantage of it.”

Player grades: Knicks use team effort to hand Joel Embiid, Sixers road loss

The New York Knicks use a team effort in order to overcome Joel Embiid to hand the Philadelphia 76ers a loss.

NEW YORK–The Philadelphia 76ers were looking to carry their road success into Madison Square Garden on Sunday evening as they took on the pesky New York Knicks. The Sixers entered the contest winning eight consecutive road games and they were looking to keep things moving in the right direction.

The Sixers raced out to a 21-point lead in the early going as their offense was humming and playing with pace. However, the Knicks stormed back against Philadelphia’s all-bench unit in both the second quarter and the fourth quarter which led to them taking the rhythm out of whatever the Sixers did early in order to build their lead. In the end, New York walked away with a 108-97 victory to hand the Sixers a rare road loss.

Joel Embiid had 31 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Sixers. James Harden had 12 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds, Tobias Harris had 14 and 10 rebounds, and PJ Tucker added 10. De’Anthony Melton poured in 14 points and Tyrese Maxey had 12 off the bench.

Here are the player grades after the loss:

Report: Hawks join pursuit of Sixers defender Matisse Thybulle

The Atlanta Hawks have now joined in on the trade pursuit of Philadelphia 76ers defender Matisse Thybulle.

The NBA trade deadline is on Thursday at 3 p.m. EST and teams are deciding which direction to go in order to improve their chances.

The Philadelphia 76ers have championship aspirations in the 2022-23 season, so one assumes they are buyers at the deadline.

However, they also have to shed some salary. One name that continues to surface in trade talks is Matisse Thybulle. Along with the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors, there is another team in pursuit of Thybulle.

Per Marc Stein via his substack, the Atlanta Hawks have now joined in on the pursuit:

Sources say that Atlanta has joined Sacramento as a confirmed suitor for Philadelphia’s Matisse Thybulle. I don’t know that the Hawks will be the ultimate landing spot, but I’ve been advised that the prospect of Thybulle getting traded before Thursday’s buzzer is very real.

The Sixers should think hard before trading Thybulle. Sure, the offensive production has been up and down, but he makes a big impact while out on the floor. He makes big plays on defense end. He provides substantial energy and great defensive play. If he stays past the deadline, he should be a part of their rotation.

Player grades: Joel Embiid, James Harden lead Sixers to road win over Spurs

Joel Embiid and James Harden lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a rather easy road win over the lowly San Antonio Spurs to begin the road trip.

The Philadelphia 76ers found themselves back on the road on Friday taking on the San Antonio Spurs to begin a three-game trip. Following a win at home on Wednesday, Philadelphia was looking to continue its winning ways and begin a new winning streak.

The Spurs gave the Sixers some issues early as they took advantage of Philadelphia essentially sleepwalking in the early going, but a boost from the bench unit in the first half led to the starters then waking up, and Philadelphia walked away with a 137-125 victory. Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 33 points and 10 rebounds.

Following his All-Star snub, James Harden had 16 points and eight assists, Tyrese Maxey had 25 off the bench, De’Anthony Melton added 13 points, and Tobias Harris had eight. Georges Niang added 13 and Shake Milton also had 14 to chip in.
