UFC on ESPN 38 video: Arman Tsarukyan, Mateusz Gamrot make weight for main event

The main event is set for Saturday’s UFC return to Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS – The main event is set for Saturday’s UFC return to Las Vegas.

[autotag]Arman Tsarukyan[/autotag] (18-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and [autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] (20-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) both made weight without issue for the UFC on ESPN 38 main event Friday at the UFC Apex. The same venue hosts Saturday’s card on ESPN.

Tsarukyan and Gamrot were the first two fighters to the scale in the two-hour official weigh-ins window, eliminating any drama for the headliner. Both fighters weighed in at 156 pounds, the non-title lightweight limit.

Check out the video highlights from their trips to the scale in the video above.

Mateusz Gamrot plots ‘five rounds of violence’ with Arman Tsarukyan in UFC on ESPN 38 headliner

Mateusz Gamrot wants to make Arman Tsarukyan suffer in the UFC on ESPN 38 headliner.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] wants to make the most of his first octagon headliner at UFC on ESPN 38.

Gamrot (20-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is set to meet Arman Tsarukyan (18-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) in a clash of rising lightweight contenders on Saturday at the UFC Apex. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN2.

The Polish fighter said “it is an honor” to be placed atop the card in just his fifth appearance with the company, but the timing couldn’t be better because he’s in his “prime right now.”

So people were surprised the UFC opted to book Gamrot and Tsarukyan against each other at this stage of their careers given their future potential. However, Gamrot said it’s a product of no one else accepting fights with them. Now that it’s happening, he intends on delivering an epic battle.

“Nobody want to fight with Arman, a lot of people are scared of him,” Gamrot told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 38 media day. “Nobody want to fight with me. We will meet together in the octagon. He’s a great fighter. Good striker, good wrestling, but I think his weakness is jiu-jitsu. I’m more experienced guy with five rounds. I’m used to the pressure. I used to be champion (in KSW) and I think it’s going to be a great show.”

Although a spectacular finish would be significant for Gamrot, he said he’s not looking to force anything that could cause him to come out on the loosing end. He’s preparing for a high-action fight over 25 minutes, and if he’s able to catch Tsarukyan with something before the final horn, he will certainly take it.

“I don’t want to finish the fight too early,” Gamrot said. “This is going to be five rounds of violence. This is probably going to be the biggest test for me so far and I’m super ready for this guy. If I see an opportunity early, I will take it.”

If Gamrot emerges victorious from UFC on ESPN 38, he said there will be nowhere for the top-ranked names at 155 pounds to hide.

“I think the winner deserves a top-five (opponent) next,” Gamrot said.

The final UFC event of the year takes place Saturday in Las Vegas with heavyweights at the top of the bill.

UFC Fight Night 199 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former title challenger [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] (25-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 4-0 UFC). Daukaus is a slight -140 favorite at Tipico. But our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are taking slight underdog Lewis in a big way at 11-2 margin.

In the co-feature, two-time welterweight title challenger [autotag]Stephen Thompson[/autotag] (16-5-1 MMA, 11-5-1 UFC) meets [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag] (19-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC). Thompson is more than a 2-1 favorite, but he’s only got a 7-6 edge in the picks.

[autotag]Amanda Lemos[/autotag] (10-1-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is the biggest favorite on the main card at more than 3-1 in her women’s strawweight fight against [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] (13-10 MMA, 8-10 UFC). Only one of our pickers is taking Hill in an upset.

[autotag]Raphael Assuncao[/autotag] (27-8 MMA, 11-5 UFC) meets [autotag]Ricky Simon[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) in a key bantamweight bout. Simon is nearly a 3-1 favorite, but the picks are tight and he has just a 7-6 lead from our staff members.

[autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] (19-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is a 2-1 favorite at lightweight against [autotag]Diego Ferreira[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC). Gamrot has a slight edge in the picks at 8-5.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Darren Elkins[/autotag] (26-9 MMA, 16-8 UFC) and [autotag]Cub Swanson[/autotag] (27-12 MMA, 12-8 UFC) throw down in a featherweight fight that seems like it should have happened years ago. Swanson nearly is a 2-1 favorite, but our pickers have Elkins with the smallest possible edge at 7-6.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Lewis (60 percent), Thompson (77 percent), Lemos (65 percent), Simon (61 percent), Gamrot (68 percent) and Swanson (62 percent) are the choices.

UFC books Diego Ferreira vs. Mateusz Gamrot for final event of 2021

A lightweight clash has been added to the final UFC event of 2021.

A lightweight matchup is the latest addition to UFC Fight Night 199.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie’s Farah Hannoun of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

UFC on ESPN 26 video: Mateusz Gamrot taps Jeremy Stephens early with powerful kimura

Watch Mateusz Gamrot hand Jeremy Stephens his first submission loss since 2009.

[autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] did what no one has done in more than a decade.

The Polish fighter handed Jeremy Stephens his first submission loss since 2009, forcing the veteran to tap out in the first round of their lightweight clash. The bout was on the UFC on ESPN 26 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

[lawrence-related id=642172]

Gamrot (19-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) immediately went for a takedown as soon as the bout started. From there he took Stephens to the mat, got side control, locked a kimura, and powered his way through the submission until he got the tap. Gamrot is the first man to submit Stephens in his last 28 UFC fights.

Gamrot is now on a two-fight winning streak since losing his UFC debut and suffering his first professional defeat to Guram Kutateladze back in October 2020. Meanwhile, Stephens falls to five defeats and one no-contest in his past six UFC bouts.

Jeremy Stephens meets Mateusz Gamrot at UFC Fight Night on July 17

Jeremy Stephens will draw a stern test in his return to 155 pounds when he meets Mateusz Gamrot at UFC Fight Night on July 17.

[autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag] will draw a stern test in his return to 155 pounds.

Stephens (28-18 MMA, 15-17 UFC) will face [autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] (18-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at a UFC Fight Night event July 17. There is not an announced location, venue or broadcast plan.

Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the booking Thursday, but asked to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Stephens will return to lightweight for the first time since 2013. The 34-year-old currently is in the roughest stretch of his career having gone 0-4 with one no contest in his past five outings.

He was scheduled to make his 155-pound debut against Drakkar Klose at UFC on ESPN 22, but the fight was scrapped due to an injury Klose suffered when he was shoved by Stephens at the weigh-ins. Klose said the shove caused his hand to go numb and his neck to tighten up, which was later diagnosed by doctors as a “brain concussion” and “sprain of cervical neck.”

After getting edged out by Guram Kutateladze in his UFC debut in October, former KSW dual-champion Gamrot notched his first octagon win when stopped Scott Holtzman in the second round at UFC on ABC 2 in April.

With the addition, the UFC’s July 17 lineup now includes:

  • Marion Reneau vs. Miesha Tate
  • Amir Albazi vs. Ode Osbourne
  • Sergey Morozov vs. Khalid Taha
  • Guram Kutateladze vs. Don Madge
  • Cameron Else vs. Aaron Phillips
  • Herbert Burns vs. Billy Quarantillo
  • Francisco Figueredo vs. Malcolm Gordon
  • Anderson dos Santos vs. Miles Johns
  • Alan Baudot vs. Rodrigo Nascimento
  • Phil Hawes vs. Deron Winn
  • Islam Makhachev vs. Thiago Moises
  • Mateusz Gamrot vs. Jeremy Stephens
