Umar Nurmagomedov ready for top-15 opponent after UFC on ESPN 38 win

Unbeaten prospect Umar Nurmagomedov thinks he’s ready for top-15 opposition following his latest win at UFC on ESPN 38.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] thinks he’s ready to size up ranked opposition in the UFC.

Nurmagomedov (15-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC), a UFC bantamweight prospect and cousin of former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, kept his undefeated record intact Saturday at UFC on ESPN 38. The 26-year-old defeated Nate Maness in a dominant unanimous decision win with 30–27, 30–26 and 30–25 scores.

Nurmagomedov thinks he can fare well against the top tier of the UFC’s 135-pound division following his latest win.

“If they give me (a top-15 opponent), I’m ready, but I don’t want to say someone’s name,” Nurmagomedov told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 38 post-fight news conference. “(I’m going) step by step. I think I’m close to beating somebody in the top 10, top five and then fighting for the belt. Slowly, slowly I’m improving everywhere, and it’s going to be great.”

Despite thinking he’s ready to take on ranked challengers, Nurmagomedov is not keen on calling anyone out. He’s also not trying to rush his career, but does see himself with a UFC belt around his waist in the future.

“I don’t care if they give me a quick road or if they give me slowly, I’m ready,” Nurmagomedov said. “For me, it’s important to win every fight and one day it’s going to happen. I’ll become champion.”

UFC on ESPN 38 results: Mateusz Gamrot emerges victorious in high-paced battle against Arman Tsarukyan

Mateusz Gamrot won the first main event of his UFC career by picking up a unanimous decision over Arman Tsarukyan.

LAS VEGAS – The main event between [autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] and Arman Tsarukyan was an incredible five rounds of action, proving exactly why this matchup deserved top billing of UFC on ESPN 38.

Both lightweight competitors entered the first main event of their UFC careers, with both men looking to make a statement on the big stage. When the dust settled after 25 minutes of high-paced action, the judges were unanimous in their decision, giving Gamrot (21-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) the nod over Tsarukyan (18-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC).

Both fighters looked to establish their game early in the fight. Gamrot tried to get a takedown after grabbing a single leg and lifting it high, but Tsarukyan somehow managed to stay on his feet. A few moments later, Tsarukyan completed a beautiful takedown, and a few wild scrambles for position soon followed.

The action remained fast-paced in the second round. After a few opening exchanges, a thunderous kick from Tsarukyan to the body of Gamrot echoed throughout the UFC Apex. Tsarukyan tried to bring the fight to the ground again but was beautifully reversed by Gamrot. Another powerful kick from Tsarukyan landed to the body, as he seemed to get the better of Gamrot in the first two rounds.

The powerful striking offense of Tsarukyan continued early in the third round. He opened with another thunderous kick to the body and cracked Gamrot with a right hand a few moments later. Gamrot once again grabbed hold of a single leg but was unable to bring the fight to the mat.

A few moments later, though, he was able to grab hold of Tsarukyan and work his way to the back. Gamrot was unable to secure the position, but Tsarukyan worked free before any serious damage or submission attempts would occur. They returned to exchanging hard strikes until the round came to a close.

Gamrot came out firing in the fourth round and landed some big shots early. A spinning back fist from Tsarukyan landed and sent Gamrot down, but he was quick to recover. Another hard kick to the body scored for Tsarukyan as Gamrot shot for and completed a takedown. Gamrot took the back of his opponent and hunted for a submission, but the fight would go to the final round.

Tsarukyan landed a beautiful outside leg kick to sweep Gamrot off his feet early. Gamrot returned to his feet and kept the pressure high, shooting in for a beautiful takedown a moment later. After controlling Tsarukyan on the mat, they returned to the feet and continued to let the strikes fly. Gamrot looked for one more takedown to close out the fight. Tsarukyan was able to reverse position in the final seconds and land a few punches before the final horn sounded on this very entertaining main event.

All three official judges scored the fight 48-47 for Gamrot, notching the unanimous decision victory for the Polish fighter.

During his post-fight interview, Gamrot made it clear who he wants to mix it up with next.

“Now, I want to fight with Justin Gaethje,” said during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “Justin Gaethje’s the most brutal guy in this division. I want to fight next with him.”

With the win, Gamrot makes it four straight after the lone setback of his professional career against Guram Kutateladze in 2020. Entering Saturday’s fight with consecutive stoppages against Scott Holtzman, Jeremy Stephens, and Diego Ferreira, the Poland-born fighter is now in a great position to take on the next level of competition in the lightweight division.

Tsarykyan entered holding the No. 14 spot in the USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie lightweight rankings, which likely means Gamrot will elevate from the honorable mentions to a ranked fighter in the next rankings update.

On the other side, the first UFC main event for Tsarukyan marks the second loss of his run with the promotion. He faltered in his UFC debut, dropping a unanimous decision to Islam Makhachev in 2019. Tsarukyan rebounded nicely as he went on to win five straight, including back-to-back stoppages against Christos Giagos and Joel Alvarez in his two previous outings.

UFC on ESPN 38 results: Shavkat Rakhmonov secures buzzer-beating submission on Neil Magny in second round

Undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov passed the toughest test of his UFC career by finishing Neil Magny at UFC on ESPN 38.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] proved he’s a real threat to the top of the welterweight division with his submission win over Neil Magny.

The undefeated Rakhmonov (16-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) received a tough test in the veteran Magny (26-9 MMA, 19-8 UFC) in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 38, but proved he belongs among the top of the division with his phenomenal performance.

The fight got off to a quick start as Rakhmonov caught a kick from Magny early and used it to push him to the canvas. From there, Rakhmonov took top position on the mat and began to work from half guard. Magny did well to hold on to prevent damage, but things heated up when Rakhmonov postured up about three minutes into the round and began raining down punches.

Magny did well to return fire with upkicks, but he couldn’t keep Rakhmonov away as he slid right back into top position a moment later and continued to land punches. Magny then began attacking a heel, but Rakhmonov was able to defend the submission attempts until the end of the round.

Magny found himself on the defensive early in the second after a few striking exchanges. Rakhmonov closed the distance, initiated a clinch, and got the fight to the ground just over a minute into the round. Rakhmonov controlled the action from the top while Magny did his best to try to get up, but found himself in position to have his neck caught in a deep guillotine with just seconds remaining.

The choke was too deep, and Magny was forced to tap with just two seconds remaining in the round.

The undefeated record of Rakhmonov remains intact after facing arguably his toughest opponent to date. The Uzbekistan native finished the first three fights of his UFC career, taking out Alex Oliveira, Michel Prazeres, and Carlston Harris. Now, he has a finish over Magny on his resume, who has been a mainstay of the top 15 for many years.

A win of this caliber proves Rakhmonov is ready for the next step up in top-heavy welterweight division, and his call out of Stephen Thompson tells everyone exactly how high he’s aiming.

Magny entered Saturday’s contest at No. 13 among welterweights in the latest USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie rankings, and Rakhmonov was right on his heels at No. 15.

Magny’s two-fight win streak comes to a halt by the hands of Rakhmonov. Magny entered Saturday’s contest on the heels of a split decision win over Max Griffin in March and a unanimous decision win over Geoff Neal last May. Saturday’s result was the first setback for Magny since a decision loss to Michael Chiesa in January 2021.
