Heisman winner Bryce Young’s 7 best high school performances

2021 Heisman winner Bryce Young is not new to hardware; at Mater Dei, he won Offensive Player of the Year. Relive his best high school games.

The newly crowned Heisman winner is not new to hardware. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young rose to national prominence as a high school junior at Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), where he helped lead the Monarchs to a national championship. And he was namedĀ USA TODAY’s Offensive Player of the YearĀ as a senior.

As Young started calling his own plays at Mater Dei, he showed elite skill and a sense of awareness on the field beyond his years. He eluded the defensive line while keeping his eyes down the field, and could make passes through tight windows while on the move. Young easily ranked among the best dual-threat quarterbacks, but as anyone who watched Alabama this year can attest, he is a true passer.

The Bama QB ran away with the Heisman voting this year, and his success is unsurprising to those who saw his high school play. Here are seven of Young’s best performances while playing at Mater Dei.

Five-star Mater Dei CB Domani Jackson out for season with injury

USC commit Domani Jackson will miss the remainder of his senior year with an injury.

No. 1 Mater Dei’s secondary was dealt a major blow on Saturday, as it was announced five-star cornerback and USC commit Domani Jackson will miss the remainder of his senior year due to an injury.

“Domani is a true Monarch,” Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson said in a statement. “He lives by the three stripes and has made a major impact on the Monarch football program over the past three and a half years. He is a dual-sport athlete and holds the state record in track for the 100M. He has taken care of his academics and will graduate early to attend USC. He’s one of the most highly recruited players in the nation and has taken all the media attention in stride.

I love this kid, I love his attitude and I love the way he’s handled everything that has been thrown at him. Needless to say, this is the worst part of football.”

Jackson is expected to make a full recovery from his injury, but will not be able to return to the field before the end of the 2021 high school football season. Mater Dei is currently the top-ranked team in the USA TODAY Super 25 and will host Liberty (Nev.) at home next weekend.

“He is a tremendous example to our younger players and will continue to develop and coach up our secondary,” Rollinson said. “Domani understands what the brotherhood is all about and we will all be a part of his comeback. If anyone can handle this adversity, it’s Domani Jackson.”

Mater Dei season opener canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests

Mater Dei’s season opener against Centennial High School has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests among Centennial players.

Mater Dei will have to wait a little bit longer than originally expected to kick off its 2021 football season.

Mater Dei’s season opener against Centennial High School has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests among Centennial players. Two players from Centennial tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting the decision to cancel the game.

“This determination was made as a result of two players testing positive for COVID-19,” the Corona-Norco Unified School District said, per release. “Although these cases were contracted outside of campus, it was determined that the two players did have close contact with two separate cohorts within the football program.”

Mater Dei now has two open dates on its schedule, as the Monarchs recently lost their Sept. 11 matchup with Miliani High School after Hawaii’s decision to delay high school football in the state until all coaches and players receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

If Mater Dei’s schedule remains intact as it currently is, Bruce Rollinson’s team will open its 2021 season against Texas powerhouse Duncanville High School.

Mater Dei freshman QB Elijah Brown tosses three touchdown passes in HS debut

Mater Dei freshman quarterback Elijah Brown fired three touchdown passes in his high school debut Friday night.

Mater Dei freshman phenom Elijah Brown was more than up for the task of taking on starting quarterback duties at the California powerhouse on Friday night, tossing three touchdown passes in his high school debut and a 52-3 rout of JSerra Catholic.

Brown wasted no time making his presence felt on the varsity level, finding senior wide receiver Josiah Zamora in the corner of the end zone at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter to give Mater Dei an early 7-0 lead.

Brown stayed hot on Mater Dei’s ensuing offensive possession, hitting junior wideout Cooper Barkate to extend the lead to 14-0. Brown’s third touchdown pass of the night came in the second half with Mater Dei already dominating, as Brown connected with Quincy Craig for six to make it a 45-3 game.

Brown, along with the rest of Mater Dei’s starters, was pulled after his third touchdown pass. While three touchdown passes is a solid outing for any quarterback, it can be argued that Brown’s most valuable contribution to Mater Dei’s season-opening win was his clean play under center. He did not account for a single turnover, which is key for his development moving forward.

Brown now joins Matt Barkley, Georgia quarterback and former five-star recruit J.T. Daniels and Todd Marinovich as the fourth freshman to start under center for Mater Dei.
