Master Teague named to the Wuerffel Trophy 2020 preseason watch list

Ohio State running back Master Teague has been named to the Wuerfell Trophy 2020 preseason watch list as announced on Friday.

Ohio State running back Master Teague was named to one of my favorite college football award watch lists on Friday. He was announced as being one of the 114 names on the Wuerffel Trophy 2020 preseason watch list that goes to “the player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.”

The trophy is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, who played quarterback for the Florida Gators.

For Teague, the label fits. If you’ve followed him at all, or know anything about his character, there aren’t too many young men that have the record and sense of obligation to help others as he does.

Not only is he an OSU Scholar-Athlete and on the Academic All-Big Ten team, but has been vocal and led by example within his hometown of Murfreesboro, Tennesee as well as on the campus of Ohio State.

Teague is a former four-star recruit and the backup of J.K. Dobbins last season. He was the presumptive starter heading into this year suffered an Achilles injury in the spring. Since then, Ohio State landed the services of Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon, meaning there will be some serious competition as fall camp rolls around.

Because of so many lopsided victories last season, Teague got some pretty significant playing time and finished as the Big Ten’s seventh-leading rusher with 789 yards. He was named Third-Team All-Big Ten.

An Ohio State running back is listed as a top ten ball carrier for 2020, but maybe not the one you think

Whatever running back is getting carries should put up lots of yards for Ohio State. Draft Wire thinks this back is a top ten one for 2020.

From time to time we keep an eye on what the folks at Draft Wire put together. They are some of the best experts at what is and will happen for all the NFL draft news you want. They did a great job with the 2020 NFL Draft, and since that’s now in the rearview, it’s all about looking ahead to 2021 now.

We’ve already seen a few mock NFL drafts from Luke Easterling that have a couple of Ohio State players going in the first-round of all the fun, and now the gang is back to rank the top ten running backs heading into 2021.

If we’re talking about ball-carriers for the Buckeyes’ though, we’re really looking at two guys. There’s Master Teague, who was the guy in waiting prior to injuring his Achilles in the spring, and then there’s Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon.

Who gets the starting nod remains to be seen, but most think Sermon will be the No. 1 guy with Teague splitting carries as long as he’s healthy. So, it might be a bit surprising then that Patrick Conn picked Teague as a top ten back overall rather than Sermon, but there’s good reason to think he can elbow his way in as the No. 1 option if he can prove he’s healthy. We wouldn’t count a kid with his character, work ethic, and skill set out.

So what does Conn say about the Teague? Click through the next page to find out.

Next … The skinny on Master Teague

Breaking Down Ohio State’s Running Game for 2020

There are questions at running back for Ohio State in 2020, but there are two really good options as long as things line up correctly.

With the exodus of J.K. Dobbins goes a ton of production in the backfield — one of the best in the history of the program. The buzz through the offseason is the highly touted graduate transfer Trey Sermon looks like he will be the starter this season. However, if Master Teague is healthy for falls camp, things might be more of a competition than many think. There are also younger players behind them that are hungry such as Marcus Crowley and Steele Chambers who could make things interesting.

Let’s take a look at the two main options because the starting spot will more than likely come down between Oklahoma grad transfer Sermon, and what many thought was the heir apparent to Dobbins — one Mr. Teague.

First … Trey Sermon

Ohio State Football Profile Card: Trey Sermon

A profile of Ohio State graduate transfer running back Trey Sermon.

Name: Trey Sermon

Number: TBD

Position: RB

Class: Senior

Height: 6’

Weight: 221 lbs

Hometown: Marrieta, GA

High School: Sprayberry

2018-2019 Stats:

GP Rush ATT Rush YDs Rush TDs Rush YPA Rec Rec YDs Avg TD Rec YPG Total YPG
14 164 947 13 5.7 12 181 15.1 0 12.9 84.9

Overview:

Sermon is a huge offseason pickup for the Buckeyes, as they look to move forward in their offense without the irreplaceable J.K. Dobbins, who went to the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the NFL Draft. The former Oklahoma Sooner is coming to Columbus as a graduate transfer, and looks ready to jump into the top running back spot immediately.

Sermon’s raw numbers belie his athletic ability and importance to both his old and new teams. His potentially stellar career at Oklahoma was plagued by injuries. He only managed ten or more touches twice in 2019, and only appeared in eight games total. That’s why I used the stats from 2018, though Sermon was not fully healthy that season either.

Sermon’s potential injury issues have to be a concern for the Buckeyes as well, especially considering that Master Teague is still recovering from a back injury. The Buckeyes do have some other potential at running back, including Demario McCall, but having either Sermon or Teague (or both) available is certainly the best option.

Sermon’s jersey number is a question for now as he has yet to pick one. He wore #4 for Oklahoma, but that is not currently available at Ohio State.

Highlights

They’re not in Scarlet and Gray, but don’t miss seeing what Sermon can do.

WATCH: Master Teague reads to elementary students

While rehabbing his Achilles, and social distancing, Ohio State running back Master Teague took time out to read to elementary students.

There’s obviously a lot of free time for folks during social distancing, lockdowns, and cancellation of numerous activities and sporting events in our country. It all has to do with the COVID-19 health crisis the world is dealing with, and we’re all coming to grips with the new normal for now.

But we’re also seeing some pretty inspirational things from those in the spotlight. If those of you reading this don’t know, Ohio State running back Master Teague is one heck of a human being, a guy the program can be proud of. He is a young man of faith and is as humble and compassionate as can be.

More proof of that came when he took time out to read to elementary students at Columbia Elementary this past week. The reading is on YouTube as well so you too can view the reading below.

Well done Teague. Thanks for being a role model and ambassador for the Ohio State program.

Ohio State “hopeful” for a speedy recovery from Master Teague

The Ohio State football coaching staff is “hopeful” that running back Master Teague will have a timely recovery.

So, this is a bit of encouragement in what’s a dark time for most.

Master Teague is continuing to improve his Achilles. Teague’s injury would’ve forced him to be sidelined during the highly-anticipated spring game had it taken place.

J.K. Dobbins’ backup in 2019, Teague still put numbers that rivaled starting running backs on other Big Ten rosters. He did that much in limited snaps and is the projected starter for 2020.

He will have competition though, one reason he needs to quickly gain his strength back. With graduate transfer Trey Sermon in the backfield as well, Teague will likely be splitting carries again.

It certainly doesn’t bode well for his playing time if he isn’t ready at the start of team workouts. But, there’s apparently a positive feel around the team that he’ll back soon.

According to Land-Grant Holy Land, Day said that they are “hopeful” that Teague will have a quick recovery. Day went into praise the young back’s progress.

Teague accumulated 789 yards last season. Think about that for a second. A backup running back was 211 yards away from 1,000. His 5.8 average was strong, just like he is, standing 5-foot-11-inches and weighing 220 pounds.

That said, expect a quick recovery and more updates to come on Teague as he continues to mend.

Trey Sermon Transfers To Ohio State

Former Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon has made his decision. He’s transferring to Ohio State.

Former Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon has made his decision. He’s transferring to Ohio State.

Ohio State just got a terrific talent to throw into the backfield mix.

Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon entered the transfer portal, leaving a loaded Sooner backfield for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have talent at running back, but they could use a star.

QB Justin Fields is still the star of the offense, but the loss of JK Dobbins took away a 2,003-yard, 21-touchdown, 23-catch back who – if it’s possible for a player of his production – was nationally underappreciated.

Sermon isn’t Dobbins, but he’s a proven producer who came up with 2,076 career rushing yards with 22 touchdowns, and caught 36 passes for 391 yards and three scores.

The 6-0, 216-pounder is quick and tears off yards in chunks, but he’s not the home-run hitter Dobbins was. The starter in the rotation early on last season, he suffered a knee injury and lost his workload, carrying the ball just nine times in the final nine games.

In 2018, though, he ran for 947 yards and 13 scores, hitting the 100-yard mark four times as the occasional feature-back. He won’t be asked to turn into a workhorse for the Buckeyes, but handling the ball 15 times or more will never be an issue.

Ohio State gets back Master Teague – the second-leading rusher with 789 yards and four touchdowns last year – but he’s coming off a torn Achilles’ heel. There are a whole slew of promising young backs, but expect Sermon to be the main man early on, at least until Teague is ready.

As a freshman, Sermon ran 17 times for 62 yards in the 2017 31-16 win over the Buckeyes.

Oklahoma RB Trey Sermon has entered the transfer portal, and there’s rumors about Ohio State

The Oklahoma Sooner 6-foot running back Trey Sermon is entering the transfer portal, and Ohio State could be a top option for him.

The Oklahoma Sooner’s six-foot running back Trey Sermon has entered the transfer portal as a grad transfer.

While there’s no confirmed reports on where he’s heading quite yet, Sermon will likely take his time to pick his next football home. Columbus will certainly be an option for the stud back. In fact, there’s sources that say Sermon is fixing his gaze towards Ohio State.

And there’s good reason. It could be a perfect fit.

Losing J.K. Dobbins after a record-setting season, Sermon could come in and either lead the team’s backfield or be a strong second option to Master Teague, who was ruled out for the rest of spring with an Achilles injury before spring itself was ruled out.

Ohio State and Sermon are just a good fit because the Buckeyes need running back depth. Sermon would come in after three collegiate seasons with the Sooners and provide not only an extra body, but one that could make a huge difference in the running game.

His best season was, by far, 2018, and he lost most of last year to injury.

Nearing 1,000 yards with a 5.8-yard average, Sermon had the most carries from the team’s backfield, a roster that also included Kyler Murray and Kennedy Brooks. All three secured three digits in total carries.

The 12-2 Sooners thrived with Sermon and Murray leading the way. The style of play that Murray played with at the collegiate level mirrors that of the dual-threat Justin Fields.

Combine all the similarities, and it’s clear that Ohio State could use Sermon to give their backfield both depth and competition as they enter what should be another terrific season in 2020.

Ohio State assistant Kevin Wilson optimistic about the Master Teague injury

Ohio State assistant coach Kevin Wilson was asked about the severity of running back Master Teague’s injury. He sounded optimistic.

[jwplayer uXx6BLSf-o2AELQvx]

News broke yesterday that Master Teague, the presumed starter at running back, will miss all of spring drills after sustaining an Achilles injury on the first day of spring practice. Most will cringe hearing about an injury of this magnitude, but how bad is it?

Ryan Day put Buckeye Nation in a bit of a panic yesterday by saying “We’re one injury away from a little bit of a crisis right now, but in the end, when it comes to September, we’re gonna be okay.” This statement came before the status of Teague’s injury was known.

However, Kevin Wilson was asked about Teague’s status today and he sounded a little more optimistic. When asked if Wilson thought Teague would be back for the start of the season he said “Yeah, I would think so.”

Wilson was quick to add that no one really knows how quickly or slowly each individual person will heal from various injuries. So if the typical timeline for an injury is three months, it may be shorter or it could be longer.

“Sometimes guys just heal faster,” said Wilson. “Their bodies recover faster. Sometimes they get treatment better than others and sometimes the injury is a little bit worse than you think. So, to say there’s a specific timeline… that’s why we do so much practices before spring ball, you get a chance to get them back.”

We’re hoping Coach Wilson is right. Not only for the Buckeye Football team, but for a young man who has been patiently waiting his turn. Wishing all the best and a speedy recovery for No. 33

Ohio State running back Master Teague out remainder of Spring with injury

Ohio State running back has suffered an injury in spring practice and will be out the remainder of the spring per sources.

Per several sources, the presumptive starting tailback for Ohio State this coming fall has suffered an injury and will be out the remainder of the spring.

According to sources cited by Eleven Warriors, Teague sustained an Achilles injury on Monday, the first day of spring practice. The severity of it is not known at this time, nor is a timetable or whether he’ll be ready for the fall. Obviously, if it’s a complete tear, that’s a completely different story with a long rehabilitation schedule than something that’s just precautionary.

Either way, it appears it’s enough for the coaching staff to put the 5-11, 220 pounder on the shelf for now.

With Marcus Crowley already listed as unavailable, and with this news, Ohio State is now down to just one scholarship back to go through all of spring. There is help arriving when those that are banged up come off injury, and Miyan Williams will be joining the team in the fall, but things are sketchy at best right now in the running backs room.

As more becomes available, we’ll provide further insight to how severe Teague’s injury is.
