Although the Wisconsin Badgers played well against the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday, their upset loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday night caused Wisconsin to fall all the way down to No. 20 in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY.

In a week where Wisconsin was expected to go 2-0, the Badgers nearly allowed a comeback from Maryland and disappeared in the second half against Penn State to lose by 10 points. Although the Nittany Lions are a team on the rise, it is still unacceptable for Wisconsin to get dominated by a team that is 3-6 in the Big Ten.

The Big Ten and the poll as a whole have shifted significantly this week. After a tough last few games, Minnesota has dropped out of the Top 25, while Illinois and Ohio State both moved up to No. 13 and No. 9. Michigan has remained steady at No. 4, while Iowa dropped one spot to No. 8.

The updated top 10 is Gonzaga (1), Baylor (2), Villanova (3), Michigan (4), Houston (5), Texas (6), Alabama (7), Iowa (8), Ohio State (9), Tennessee (10).

Wisconsin will get a rematch against the underrated Penn State Nittany Lions at the Kohl Center on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. CST.

After an underwhelming performance that ended in a loss against the No. 13 Ohio State Buckeyes, the No. 14 Wisconsin Badgers will look to recover in an away rematch against the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday night.

In an otherwise poor overall game against the Buckeyes, Wisconsin forward Aleem Ford’s hot stretch from the 3-point line helped the Badgers to stay in the game. He finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.

Ford’s consistent shooting will be needed against Maryland, who was able to score outscore the Badgers by 10 points in the second half of their previous matchup. The Terrapins went on to win the game 70-64. Although Maryland has not been at the top of the Big Ten this season, they have been a trap game for highly-ranked teams across the conference with wins against No. 19 Illinois, No. 21 Minnesota, and of course No. 14 Wisconsin.

Even though the Terrapins got the better of the Badgers in their first matchup early in the season, Wisconsin will be looking to respond in a big way after their loss to the Buckeyes. This game should be yet another great Big Ten matchup to watch this season.

After an inconsistent week that ended in a blow out a victory against Northwestern and a disappointing loss to No. 15 Ohio State, the Wisconsin Badgers have fallen three spots to No. 13 in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Although the Badgers looked phenomenal against a struggling Northwestern team last week, their extremely poor shooting and interior defense against the Buckeyes cost them the game. The loss to Ohio State also cost Wisconsin an opportunity to move into second place in the Big Ten.

It had been another turbulent week in the Big Ten with several teams moving significantly in the rankings. Michigan and Ohio State both jumped three spots after solid weeks to No. 4 and No. 15, while Illinois moved up two spots to No. 22 after their convincing victory against Penn State. In addition to the Badgers, Iowa and Minnesota also fell three spots to No. 7 and No. 20.

After two consecutive weeks of playing highly ranked opponents, the Badgers’ schedule will be a bit calmer this week playing unranked Maryland and Penn State.

The top 10 includes Gonzaga (1), Baylor (2), Villanova (3), Michigan (4), Texas (5), Houston (6), Iowa (7), Virginia (8), Alabama (8) and Texas Tech (10).

Wisconsin will be on the road in their next game against the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. CST.

After a disappointing loss to the Maryland Terrapins, the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers look to rebound in Big Ten play against the No. 21 Minnesota Golden Gophers at the Kohl Center on New Year’s Eve.

The Badgers struggled on offense throughout the game against Maryland, and it will be important for Wisconsin to be more efficient in shooting, especially from their starters, to win the game against Minnesota. D’Mitrik Trice has been exceptional in the last two games against Maryland and Michigan State, averaging 27 points. Despite his success, Wisconsin will need more from starters like Micah Potter, Brad Davison and Nate Reuvers, who all had lackluster performances against the Terrapins.

Minnesota has a lot of momentum going into this game because of their back-to-back upset wins against No. 10 Iowa and No. 17 Michigan State. The Golden Gophers are led by the fifth-ranked scorer in the Big Ten, junior guard Marcus Carr. He is averaging 24 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds a game.

Minnesota will be a tough test for Wisconsin, and a win for the Badgers will help to push them back to the top of the Big Ten.

After an important Christmas Day win against the 12th-ranked Michigan State Spartans, the ninth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers look to stay undefeated in conference play against the Maryland Terrapins on Monday night.

In the thrilling game against Michigan State, D’Mitrik Trice had an exceptional day to beat Tom Izzo and the Spartans. Trice finished with 29 points, two assists, two steals and two rebounds. His effort helped Wisconsin overcome 27 points from Michigan State forward Joey Hauser. Trice is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13 points per game, and leads the Badgers in assists and steals this season.

Maryland (5-3) has struggled on the road this season. The Terrapins are 0-2 against Clemson and Purdue. They are also 0-2 in conference play with the loss against Purdue and 19th-ranked Rutgers at home. Unfortunately for the Terrapins, the game against Wisconsin is at the Kohl Center.

Guard Eric Ayala leads the Terrapins in scoring and minutes per game this season, and he will be a big matchup to watch against D’Mitrik Trice and Brad Davison tomorrow.

This could be a trap game for Wisconsin after such a big win on Christmas Day, and it will be important for the experienced leadership of the Badgers to step up and prevent any letdown after the game against Michigan State.

Ten Badger Moments: Brad Davison’s game-saving sequence

In this series, I want to look back on the memorable moments that defined the 2019-20 Badgers. This will not be a top-10 ranking of the best moments of the season from 10-1. Instead, I will go chronologically through the year and find ten moments that made 2019-20 unforgettable for Wisconsin basketball. Each moment will be accompanied by a word that describes this 2019-20 Badger basketball team, and in this third installment that adjective is clutch.

There was something about this group that had that refuse to lose mentality. Time and time again as the season wore on, the Badgers found ways to win games they had no business coming out on the right end of. Many different players, up and down the eight-man rotation, made huge plays towards the second half of the season. The most clutch individual sequence of the year? Look no further than Brad Davison against Maryland.

The Terrapins and the Badgers met at the Kohl Center on January 14th, in a game that was back and forth from the opening tip. Neither squad was able to gain much separation as the battle wore on. The first half was marked by Micah Potter, and a nearly perfect shooting display. The Ohio State transfer finished the game with 14 points on 6-7 from the field in just 13 minutes. Fans during the final stretch were questioning why Potter was not on the floor for the final 7-plus crunch-time minutes, and the Badger offense stalled as Maryland tried to put UW away. The answer, as we found out after the game, was Greg Gard feeling that his defense, especially in the high pick-and-roll, was better that night with Potter on the pine. Instead of sulking, perhaps the loudest Badger fan during the final stretch was Micah Potter, who encouraged his teammates and the Kohl Center crowd as the action went down to the wire.

With Maryland clinging to a one-point lead with only 12 seconds left, the Terps were forced to inbound from under Wisconsin’s basket. The Badgers either needed a quick steal or they would be forced to play the foul game. Enter Brad Davison. The junior captain knocked the rock off of the initial player throwing the inbounds pass, Daryl Morsell. What happened on the ensuing possession you ask? I am sure most of you remember:

This Badger team, because of the heart of competitors like Davison, found ways to win in the clutch. As much as we all would have loved to see them do it in March, they gave us quite the taste throughout the year.

Micah Potter should be the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year

First things first, let us not take anything away from the impact that Aaron Wiggins has had at Maryland. Wiggins was named the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year on Monday, and helped lead the Terps to a co-Big Ten regular season title. The sophomore …

First things first, let us not take anything away from the impact that Aaron Wiggins has had at Maryland. Wiggins was named the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year on Monday, and helped lead the Terps to a co-Big Ten regular season title. The sophomore combo guard finished the year averaging 10.4 points per game to go along with nearly five rebounds, and is coming off of an excellent month. The North Carolina native lead Maryland in scoring in back-to-back games against Ohio State and Minnesota during the final week of February. This argument is a reflection of how well Micah Potter played rather than taking anything away from the significant impact of Wiggins for the Terrapins.

With that being said, Micah Potter completely deserves this award. A common first thought about why the Ohio State transfer did not come away with the hardware could be games missed. This award, however, is only indicative of conference performance and Potter only missed two conference games out of the 20. Not only was he an energy-providing stretch big for this team, but he was also one of the key differences between a team that started conference play with a loss at Rutgers (this loss did not turn out to look so bad), and a team that ended the year as co-Big Ten regular season champions. Once Kobe King left the program, Potter, for matchup reasons, was inserted into the starting lineup for a total of three Big Ten games including the Badger win at Indiana. Despite those three games, the Ohio native’s main role was as a key contributor off the pine. Now let’s break it down statistically.

There are certain arguments with Potter and Wiggins that cancel each other out. They both averaged right around ten points per contest, Potter had a slight edge in the rebounding category as a big, their teams both won the same amount of conference games, and they each had games where they led their respective squads to w’s. One major separating factor, however, is how Potter and Wiggins individually got their respective numbers. For the Badger big man, efficiency was incredibly high in conference play. Potter shot an incredible 48.9% from beyond the arc, nearly 55% on all field goals, and 83% from the line. He did all of that while only playing nearly 19 minutes per game. Potter only played in three games that were not conference clashes. He did not make a three in those three games, and he averaged just under five points a game. The Mentor, Ohio product elevated his game, got his legs under him, and did damage in conference play.

Wiggins, on the flip side, got to his numbers in a much less efficient way. In conference play, the sophomore guard shot just 38% from the field and a bit under 32% from distance. His scoring average actually dropped slightly down to 10.0 points per conference game in comparison to the non-conference slate. Additionally, Wiggins played nearly eight more minutes than the Badger big man on average in conference play. In college basketball terms, Wiggins has not actually been incredibly inefficient. Once again, this is an argument about the incredible efficiency of Potter in conference play.

Had Maryland and Wisconsin’s records been significantly different, which at the beginning of February looked likely, it would have made sense to reward winning and therefore reward Wiggins. With these two teams tied at 14-6 in the conference after an eight-game Wisconsin winning streak? It’s truly hard to see how Potter did not come away with a well-deserved trophy.

Michigan State romp over Maryland leaves Big Ten up in the air

Big Ten craziness

When the Michigan State Spartans authoritatively defeated the Maryland Terrapins in College Park on Saturday night, they left the Big Ten championship race up in the air. Maryland could have sealed the league title with a win. Instead, the Terps are now just one game ahead of three teams in a scramble for the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. If Maryland can’t sweep its last two games, we could easily have a split title this season.

Yet, the MSU win over Maryland left the Big Ten “up in the air” in ways which go beyond the conference standings. This result was more than just an act of dragging Maryland back to the pack and preventing the Terrapins from clinching the league title. This was a game which left everyone in college basketball wondering, “Was this a sign of Michigan State playing with familiar urgency under Tom Izzo late in the season, or was this a sign that Maryland isn’t a heavyweight team?”

It is hard to find a clear answer, and that is the ultimate sense in which the Big Ten is an uncertain place, one week before the conference tournament.

Yes, Michigan State looked strong in one game on one night, and yes, we have seen the Spartans come alive in March many times before after struggling in much of the regular season. Nevertheless, the Big Ten has been so up and down this season — with teams maxing out one night and then dropping stink bombs the next — that it is hard to have complete confidence in Michigan State’s win as an indication that the Spartans are ready to roll in March.

If anything, Michigan State’s March reputation is less relevant here than Maryland’s March reputation. The Terps have regularly fared poorly at the Big Ten Tournament. They have rarely done well in the NCAA Tournament under Mark Turgeon, a 2016 Sweet 16 appearance being their best result despite fielding numerous talented teams.

Will this MSU-Maryland result tell us more about the Spartans or the Terps in the coming days and weeks? We can all offer our answers, but the question doesn’t seem like an easy one to answer. This is why the state of the Big Ten is so muddled after 18 conference games. Not a whole lot feels safe, certain, or decided in this conference. That’s precisely why the Big Ten Tournament will be so interesting.
