Browns’ 2022 NFL Draft class led by Martin Emerson Jr. named 17th-best

The Browns’ 2022 NFL Draft class was a middle-of-the-pack unit.

The Cleveland Browns are now preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft, but this did not stop ESPN from ranking the most productive rookie classes from the 2022 NFL Draft. And despite not picking until the third round, the Browns’ class, led by Martin Emerson Jr., fell 17th on their list.

“The Browns had a surprisingly strong draft class considering the absence of a first- or second-round pick. The star is third-round cornerback Martin Emerson Jr., who played 72% of Cleveland’s defensive snaps as the third corner. Emerson allowed just 5.3 yards per target and a 47% completion rate in coverage. The Browns also got a lot of playing time out of edge rusher Alex Wright (50% of snaps) and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey (31% of snaps). Wide receiver David Bell played less than expected but still racked up 24 catches for 214 yards. Kicker Cade York was above average on kickoffs but below average on field goals. He finished the year 24-for-32, including three misses from inside 40 yards.”

The Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills are locked in a close game in the first half at Ford Field. The Browns, however, have been struck by the injury bug not once, but twice already. After center Ethan Pocic left on the first play of the game, now rookie cornerback Martin Emerson has left the game as well.

Emerson, however, was shown standing on the sidelines with his helmet on and did not go into the medical tent. He very well could return soon in this matchup as the Browns look to steal a win from the Bills here in Detroit.

Browns still missing Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and David Njoku from practice

The Browns are without four in today’s practice, including David Njoku and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah

As the Miami Dolphins are next on the menu for the Cleveland Browns, they are returning to relative health. During today’s practice, only four players were held out of practice. The big names sidelined were linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and tight end David Njoku. Both players missed the game against the Cincinnati Bengals as well.

Outside of the Owusu-Koramoah and Njoku, the Browns were also down two rookies due to illness. Both cornerback Martin Emerson and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey were listed with an illness.

We are still only at the mid-week point and we will get a better understanding of who will be available against the Dolphins later in the week. Defensive ends Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney joined Amari Cooper and Joel Bitonio for a day of rest as well.

Updating the Browns cornerback situation entering Week 2

The Browns have done some roster maneuvering at CB ahead of the Week 2 matchup with the Jets

The Cleveland Browns continue to churn the bottom of their roster after a Week one victory over the Carolina Panthers. With CB Greedy Williams placed on injured reserve, the Browns front office looked to add some additional depth at cornerback signing first-year cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. (5-11, 197). Graham Jr was drafted in the 6th round in the 2021 draft and played in four games for the Bears last season, spending the other 14 weeks on their practice squad.

Herb Miller was waived to make room for Graham Jr. on the 53-man roster but did clear waivers and will sign on with Browns practice squad for the time being.

Miller spent all of training camp with team, made the initial 53-man roster, Sunday’s gameday roster, played all 22 special teams snaps and recovered a Demetric Felton muffed punt in the Browns’ Week 1 victory. The Browns add another contributing corner to the mix by signing Graham Jr. and retaining Miller to the practice squad.

In somewhat of a surprise, Browns rookie cornerback M.J. Emerson was the third cornerback on the field and played outside opposite Denzel Ward when the Browns kicked Greg Newsome inside to cover the slot. Emerson played 42 snaps on defense finishing with an overall PFF score of 70.6 and a coverage grade of 70.3. Meanwhile, training camp darling A.J. Green did not play one defensive snap.

Underdogs to watch in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick goes to the film to predict some underdogs bound to shine in their Week 1 NFL matchups

As the 2022 NFL regular season gets underway, there are a few under dogs who are bound to stand out in week one.

It’s no fun to point out the Pro Bowl players or elite starters who have already made a name for themselves. Instead, there are some under-the-radar starters and second-string players who will have a chance this week to prove their dominance. Whether it’s a favorable matchup versus their opponent or continuing their performance from preseason, these are a few guys to keep our eyes on.

Let’s go to the film and check them out!

CB Martin Emerson has a chance to make an early impact

Cleveland’s first selection, which came in the third round, will have a chance to make an impact in Week 1, not exactly what everyone thought when he was selected:

It is not rare for a team’s first selection in any given NFL draft to have a chance to make an impact as a rookie. It is rare for a team’s first selection to come in the third round of the draft.

For the Cleveland Browns, drafting CB Martin Emerson after trading their first-round pick and trading down out of the second round was curious. At the time, the Browns had four quality players at his position including Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome II, both former first-round picks.

As Week 1 of the regular season rolls around, the other two quality players at Emerson’s position are not on the active roster. The Browns traded Troy Hill back to the Los Angeles Rams while Greedy Williams, a former second-round pick, just went on injured reserve.

What once looked like adding depth to an already deep position now looks like a prescient move.

Emerson will step into Williams’ place as Cleveland’s third cornerback which should lead him to plenty of playing time right away. If he plays well, Emerson will not be giving that role back even when Williams returns from injured reserve.

It is interesting that HC Kevin Stefanski named Emerson and not third-year pro A.J. Green as the team’s third corner:

Despite really good tape coming out of college and a pick-6 in the preseason, based on some recent data, it is likely that Emerson will get tested regularly in coverage.

Cleveland’s first selection, which came in the third round, will have a chance to make an impact in Week 1, not exactly what everyone thought when he was selected.
