Ravens WR Zay Flowers reposts tweet criticizing his usage in second half of loss to Raiders

Ravens WR Zay Flowers reposts tweet criticizing his usage in second half of loss to Raiders

Stop me if you have heard this one before, but a wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens appears disgruntled with his role in the team’s offense.

Following the Ravens’ 26-23 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders which dropped the team to 0-2, wide receiver Zay Flowers reposted a tweet criticizing the team’s usage of him in the second half of both games to start the season.

Flowers finished the game as the team’s leading receiver with seven catches for 91 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets. After a productive first half with six catches for 83 yards, Flowers caught just one pass for eight yards in the second half, albeit for a touchdown.

This situation is reminiscent of a time when Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, another Ravens’ first-round wide receiver, hinted at his displeasure with offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s run-heavy offense on social media in 2020.

What’s the point of having souljas if you never use them,” Brown tweeted following a loss during the 2020 season. Brown later deleted the tweet, but his frustration remained, leading to a trade request which general manager Eric DeCosta obliged following his third season in Baltimore, sending him to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Ravens need to hope that Flowers does not follow the same path as Brown and can instead remain a favorite target for quarterback Lamar Jackson for years to come in Baltimore.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was asked the day following the game if he was aware of Flowers’ frustration on social media.

Not that I’m aware of,Harbaugh said. “Zay [Flowers] has been great. [I’ve had] great conversations with Zay. I’m not aware of any of the social media stuff.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Kansas City Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown

Analyzing Kansas City Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown’s 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown signed a 1-year deal worth $7 million with the back-to-back defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason. Brown spent the last 2 seasons with Arizona after playing his first 3 seasons with Baltimore, the team that drafted him in the 1st round (25th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.

Below, we look at Hollywood Brown’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

After having his worst statistical season since his rookie campaign last year, Brown is expected to get back to his 1,000-receiving-yard self now that he’ll be catching passes from QB Patrick Mahomes. Brown is expected to be a dynamic piece in the Kansas City offense that desperately needed receivers.

Brown’s 117.16 ADP in redraft leagues puts him in the range of the 10th (12-team league) to 15th round (8-team league). His ADP ranks 7th on the Chiefs. RB Isiah Pacheco (22.47) is 1st, followed by Mahomes (26.38), TE Travis Kelce (29.10), WR Rashee Rice (61.82), WR Xavier Worthy (79.65) TE Jared Wiley (113.64).

Among all wideout, Brown’s ADP puts him 51st at the position, just behind Buffalo’s Khalil Shakir (116.28), Las Vegas’ Jakobi Meyers (109.81) and Detroit’s Jameson Williams (107.43). Brown is just head of the Chargers’ Josh Palmer (119.46), Green Bay’s Romeo Doubs (121.21) and San Francisco rookie Ricky Pearsall (122.48).

Where should you draft Brown?

Brown’s fantasy value should get a hefty boost from playing alongside Mahomes, but the fact that he has to share targets with Rice, Worthy, Kelce and Pacheco hurts his value a bit.

Brown will still be a fantastic deep threat alongside Worthy as both have blazing speed, but Mahomes will more than likely still prefer Rice and Kelce in underneath routes.

There is no clear WR1 on the Chiefs yet, so Brown does have a pretty high ceiling fantasy wise, especially if he can take the top off of defenses because we all know how much Mahomes loves to throw the deep ball.

A big concern with Brown is that he suffered a chest injury in a preseason game that will have sideline him for the first few weeks of the season. So, be aware of that.

I’m not sold on Brown being a bad fantasy pick. In fact, I like him as a depth WR or FLEX option, especially in bigger leagues. Brown will have some single-digit fantasy games no doubt, but in this Chiefs offense, he is also bound to make some explosive plays that raise his fantasy value.

Chiefs WR Marquise Brown could miss Week 1 vs. Ravens with sternoclavicular dislocation

Chiefs WR Marquise Brown could miss Week 1 vs. Ravens with sternoclavicular dislocation

The Kansas City Chiefs addressed the wide receiver position by adding new faces this offseason, including former Baltimore Ravens’ first-round pick Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, whom the Chiefs signed to a one-year, $7 million contract in March. The speedy receiver is a significant upgrade to a wide receiver core that struggled for much of last season for the Super Bowl champions.

Brown, 27, suffered a sternoclavicular dislocation against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the team’s first preseason game, meaning he may not have the chance to face his original team in Week 1 when the Ravens travel to Kansas City for the season opener. The injury occurred on the game’s first snap when Brown was tackled awkwardly following an 11-yard reception. Brown was hospitalized following the injury but has since been released.

The Chiefs could turn to first-round rookie Xavier Worthy in Brown’s absence. Worthy broke the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Combine with 4.21 seconds. Kansas City also has talented second-year receiver Rashee Rice, but he faces a possible suspension following a multi-car crash this offseason.

In his three seasons with the Ravens, Brown caught 195 passes for 2,361 yards and 21 touchdowns. Following a trade request, Brown was sent to the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the last two seasons. Brown caught 118 passes for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns during his time with the Cardinals. Brown had only crossed 1,000 receiving yards in a season once when he finished with 1,008 yards in his last season with Baltimore in 2021.

Sorting through all that is the Kansas City Chiefs receiving corps

Making fantasy football sense of this deep but unsettled cast of wideouts.

One of the more remarkable aspects of the Kansas City Chiefs winning back-to-back Super Bowls is that the team hasn’t had a wide receiver reach the 1,000-yard mark since they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins before the 2022 season. That year, JuJu Smith-Schuster, now with the New England Patriots, led the club with 933; last year it was Rashee Rice (938). Beyond that, only current Buffalo Bills WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling has even topped 500 yards the past two years.

Kansas City’s struggles at the position haven’t been from a lack of effort as they’ve used premium picks on Rice, Skyy Moore, and Xavier Worthy, signed veteran free agents (Smith-Schuster and Marquise Brown), and traded for Kadarius Toney and Mecole Hardman. On paper, this year’s group looks the best it has since Hill was traded with a deep mix of talent around quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

What does that mean for fantasy owners? Let’s dive in.

2024 Schedule Swings: Receivers

Which receiver gets a far easier schedule for 2024? Who experiences the worst drop in schedule strength?

The schedule strength for receivers is typically the least accurate compared to running backs and quarterbacks because two to four wideouts and a tight end are regularly used per team, and each varies in how they mix them.

That means comparing the schedule strength between 2023 and 2024 is also harder to apply to individual players. Only the extremes are likely to matter.

The average fantasy points allowed by defenses to receivers last year were applied to each offense’s schedule to determine their true schedule strength of last year and the same values are applied to their 2024 schedule. This includes considering both home and away venues separately for each defense.

The resulting fantasy point advantages are compared between years and the difference is their “swing points.”  The higher the Swing Points, the better their schedule is compared to last year.

This analysis is very close to that for the quarterbacks, but a few differences stem from relying on running backs as receivers on some teams, as that skews the pass distribution.

Best schedule swings

Drake London, Kyle Pitts (ATL) – This is all good news for a franchise that was among the worst in passing for the last couple of seasons. Refreshing with Kirk Cousins, a new pass-intensive scheme and now the most improved schedule from 2023 and it all is looking up for the Falcons.

Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen (CAR) – Bryce Young was the first player drafted in 2023, but he had little help in any direction for a franchise that owned a minimal amount of passing weapons, a one-year offensive scheme that flopped and a bad schedule. A new set of coaches, upgrades with Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette, and a vastly upgraded schedule should all make a positive difference and get the Panthers’ passing offense on track.

DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze (CHI) – The Bears already have an embarrassment of riches with receivers DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, and Cole Kmet. They drafted the top quarterback in the 2024 class and get a nice improvement in schedule. The only downside here is trying to feed all those options.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta (DET) – The Lions already had one of the best passing offenses and now enjoy a solid rise in outlook with the No. 3 best schedule for receivers. With the offense already dedicated to piling up the receptions for St. Brown and LaPorta, the schedule only serves to make them even more reliable.

Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudy, David Njoku (CLE) – The Browns offense needed a break and 2024 should allow the receivers to meet their potential with Deshaun Watson healthy and well-versed in the offense and the schedule finally well above average.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Trey McBride (ARI) – The rookie Harrison and McBride already look like locks for a high volume of targets and they get a healthy Kyler Murray back. Throw in one of the top schedules after only average in 2023, and the needle is pointing up for the Arizona receivers this year.

About the same schedule strength

The bad news is that the Jaguars, Bengals, Dolphins, and Broncos all repeat their ultra-tough schedule strengths from 2023. Can they remain better than their schedule?

Worst schedule swings

Malik Nabers, Wan’Dale Robinson (NYG) – The Giants were already challenged with yet another shaky year of Daniel Jones and now the schedule is working against them. It is enough to drop Nabers another tick and hope he can survive a tough rookie campaign.

Quentin Johnson, Joshua Palmer (LAC) – The Chargers already swapped out coaches and dedicate their offense to running the ball more. And they stripped out all veteran talent from the wideouts. And they rely on what appears to be one of the weakest receiver units in the NFL. And now their receivers get to go against the worst schedule. Justin Herbert is an elite quarterback, but everything with the 2023 Chargers screams that a down year is about to happen.

Marquise Brown, Rashee Rice, Travis Kelce (KC) – This is less worrisome with an upgraded set of receivers and Patrick Mahomes playing in the same pass-happy scheme. If any team can weather a bad schedule swing, it is the Chiefs.

Mike Evans, Chris Godwin (TB) – The Buccaneers take a dive down from their previous No. 5 schedule strength for receivers but their scheme has a huge portion of the targets funnel through Evans and Godwin. They may not equal last year, but shouldn’t fall far thanks to volume alone.

Puka Nacua, Cooper Kupp (LAR) – Nacua blew up with a historic rookie season and Kupp is always dangerous weapon when healthy.  This slide doesn’t help but the duo is one of the best in the league. They should still deliver even with the increased competition.

Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown: ‘Everyone is on the same page’

Kansas City #Chiefs WR Marquise Brown praised the team’s personnel during his comments to the media on Wednesday. | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp sessions were a significant period to reacclimate the team before next month’s training camp. The addition of new players and proven veterans working together to build early chemistry are all ingredients for another Super Bowl run.

After Wednesday’s practice, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown spoke with reporters about his adjustment to the Chiefs offense and trust in the personnel.

“I feel like everyone is on the same page; everyone has the same goal and mission,” said Brown. “The way we compete out there in practice and then – we teach each other like we help each other, defense talks to offense, offense talks to defense, so I feel like that’s a big part of it.”

During his last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Brown had 118 receptions for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns. He made a name for himself as a member of the Baltimore Ravens, with his best season in 2021, earning praise around the league with 91 receptions for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns.

“I’m excited to be here. (I’m) trusting (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid, (Offensive Coordinator) Coach (Matt) Nagy and Pat (Mahomes).” Said Brown. “I’m just excited for the opportunity and what’s ahead.”

The Chiefs have plenty of speed projected on their 2024 roster at the wide receiver position. As the veteran, Brown is expected to produce immediately as the younger talent finds their way.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: Hollywood Brown has ‘done a great job’

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes lauded WR Marquise “Hollywood” Brown during his comments to the media on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs ended their mandatory offseason minicamp on Thursday, marking the last time that the team will practice together until training camp in late July.

After the team’s final workout on Thursday, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke with the media. In his comments, the Super Bowl LVIII MVP detailed his thoughts on receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who has impressed during the team’s offseason practices.

“He’s [Brown] done a great job,” Mahomes said. “It’s hard to learn this offense and I feel like he’s done a great job picking it up very fast. Obviously, you see the ability – I mean obviously I don’t know how he’s here in our place because of how talented he is.”

The 28-year-old quarterback intends to hold Brown to high standards this season and told reporters that he expects the veteran receiver to open up the offense.

“I can just see that it’s going to be a great season for him,” Mahomes explained. “[Brown will] just take pressure off of other guys and I think it’s going to help get [Travis Kelce] open, help get Rashee open, going to help get all these guys open. You’re going to have that speed threat that can run routes and do all those different things so I’m very excited to get him out there in the regular season.”

Brown has been a standout performer in minicamp workouts and has already established chemistry with Mahomes, which will pay dividends for the pair during the regular season.

ESPN considers WR Deion Burks a ‘sleeper’ in the 2025 NFL Draft cycle

The Oklahoma Sooners added a big-time talent in wide receiver Deion Burks, but he might be a sleeper in the 2025 NFL Draft per ESPN.

The Oklahoma Sooners picked up one of the most dynamic players available in the transfer portal this offseason in wide receiver [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag].

He showed off his big-play ability in the Sooners [autotag]spring game[/autotag] with a pair of touchdowns and 175 receiving yards. Sure, it was an exhibition game, but the speed, agility, and quickness were on display. Taking over in the slot for Drake Stoops, who had a career year, Burks looks like he’s heading toward a career year in his own right.

And if that’s the case, it won’t be long before NFL front offices take notice for the [autotag]2025 NFL draft[/autotag]. But at the moment, he may be flying under the radar. ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller (ESPN+) dubbed Burks one of the sleepers of next year’s draft as we sit here in June.

Oklahoma will be breaking in new quarterback [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], but the early returns from the two have been promising, according to scouts. That includes Arnold connecting with Burks for two long scores — 64 and 50 yards — in Oklahoma’s spring game in April. – Matt Miller, ESPN

“If you watch the spring game, you can see the chemistry they already have,” said an AFC West area scout via ESPN. “Not to make a helmet comparison, but Burks can be a [autotag]Hollywood Brown[/autotag]-type dude there.”

If Burks can have a [autotag]Marquise Brown[/autotag] type of impact, it would go a long way toward Jackson Arnold putting together the type of season many believe he’s capable of. And if the spring game is any indication, Burks will be announcing his presence often in 2024.

Matt Nagy explains the evolution of Chiefs’ deep passing game

#Chiefs OC Matt Nagy told reporters about the evolution of Kansas City’s deep-passing game during a press conference this week.

2023 was an abnormal year for the Kansas City Chiefs offense and Patrick Mahomes, who struggled to connect with receivers deep down the field.

During a media availability session on Thursday, Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spoke to reporters about the effort that Kansas City’s coaching staff put in to develop more explosive plays for Mahomes and his speedy new pass-catchers.

When asked about the deep ball specifically, Nagy explained that he and his staff have made a point to innovate and rethink their approach.

“There was quite a bit,” Nagy said about his work on the deep passing game.  “It’s a unique question because we always try to go into every year with that mindset. You want to have the initiative to be great at that and practice it from day one. We’ve had some success early on, we’ve got to keep it going, but it’s a mindset.”

Over the past few seasons, defenses have been playing deeper coverage against the Chiefs, causing Mahomes to throw more underneath routes and drive more methodically down the field.

Nagy acknowledged the strategy, but made it clear that he wants Mahomes and the rest of his offense to be cautiously aggressive against deeper coverages.

“I think we’ve seen an evolution – not just against the Chiefs in recent years but also the NFL in general – the deep shots aren’t there as much,” Nagy continued. “[We] just [want to have] that balance of being able to… have that touchdown to check-down mentality, but be smart with when we do take those shots.”

The explosive passing attack was almost non-existent for the Kansas City’s offense last season, as the Chiefs’ receivers struggled to create separation down the field.

With the additions of Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy, Mahomes should have ample opportunities to challenge opposing defenses.
