Marquette vs Butler Game Preview

Why Marquette Will Win

More on this in a moment, but the Butler defense has been terrific at times lately and it’s still losing.

The games have been close, but the Bulldogs’ inability to do much on the boards and lack of scoring punch are a problem.

The free throws are falling lately, but that’s a tad bit of an aberration – for the year they don’t get to the line enough and don’t usually make them when they get there.

Marquette moves the ball around well, finds the open man without a problem, and it’s good enough defensively to come up with a whole lot of stops – the 80 points scored by UConn in its win a few days ago isn’t the norm.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Butler Will Win

It’s this simple for Marquette. When it hits its threes, it wins. When it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

The Golden Eagles are 10-0 when they make 38% or more from the outside, and they’re 6-8 when they don’t. Now they have to go against a Butler team that might have a whole slew of issues, but it’s terrific at stopping teams at hitting from three.

No one has made more than 24% from three in any of the last five games – Creighton made just 2-of-22 several days ago – and only four teams were able to get to the 38% mark.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Butler has been really, really, really close finding something positive.

It might have lost three straight, but that was by a grand total of nine points. Marquette doesn’t have a problem on the road, and it’s more than fine dealing with low scoring tight games, and it’s going to have to deal with that again.

If Marquette gets hot from three for a stretch, forget it. It’ll win in a walk. It’ll take a few late free throws and key shots, though, to get out alive.

Marquette vs UConn Game Preview

Why Marquette Will Win

When the threes fall, the opponents fall.

(Dreadfully sorry. I’ll try to do better next time.)

Marquette couldn’t hit from the outside against Providence and lost. It hit from the outside against just about everyone else in 2022, and won.

After the rough midseason stretch, the Golden Eagles started to get really, really good from the outside making nine or more in eight of their last nine games. The one outlier was that Providence game.

This is a different team than the one that got dropped by UConn 78-70 back in late December. That’s when the shooting wasn’t there.

There’s more of a commitment to getting the extra pass, and there’s something about taking more outside shots that seems to be helping.

By the way, UConn is generally bad at guarding the three. Villanova just hit 55% from the outside in its win, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why UConn Will Win

Only three teams have made more than seven threes on UConn this year, and they all lost – that includes Auburn.

No, overall UConn isn’t all that great at stopping teams from making threes, but offenses just don’t take enough of them considering how tough it is to score inside.

There’s a bit too much inconsistency overall, but it’s great at home, it’s got the ability to keep up in a shootout, and it’s fantastic on the glass and generating second chance points.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Expect much, much different Marquette team.

UConn will try to force things to go inside, but the Golden Eagles will come out firing from the start on the road.

Getting away from Milwaukee hasn’t been that much of an issue in 2022 – their game translates. The three will fall just enough to keep UConn’s mini-late season slide going.

Villanova vs Marquette Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

Stop the three, stop Marquette.

It’s not that the Golden Eagles can’t find other ways to score inside and on the move, but they’re all about hitting the outside shot going 9-0 when they make 38% or more of their threes – including nailing 45% in the 57-54 win over Villanova a few weeks ago.

That was an aberration.

Villanova is normally great at stopping the three – only six teams have been able to hit 38% or more. The Wildcats are 14-1 against teams that don’t get to 38%, and on the other side, they’re a whole lot better at making the three than they were in the first meeting.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Marquette Will Win

Speaking of threes, you have to be able to hit them to keep up with Villanova.

Yeah, the Wildcats are usually outstanding at stopping the three, but you have to take them to make them, and Marquette will take them.

It’ll be a volume thing. The Golden Eagles jacked up 29 tries in the first meeting and hit a season-high 13. That’s sort of the deal with them here. They don’t get offensive rebounds, but if they can get to double-digit threes, they’re right there.

Marquette is 9-0 when hitting ten ore more from three, and 6-7 when it doesn’t. And …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Villanova is 2-4 when allowing teams to hit nine or more from the outside. The Wildcats have been great in the three games since the loss to Marquette, but they also went against teams that weren’t able to connect from the outside well enough.

It’ll be another close, tough fight, but at home, Marquette will bust past the loss to Providence with a good enough shooting night to survive.

Marquette vs Providence Game Preview

Why Marquette Will Win

It wasn’t exactly pretty the first time around.

Back on January 4th, the Golden Eagles welcomed the Friars to Fiserv and gave them an 88-56 beating. That was the start of a seven game winning streak for one of the hottest teams in college basketball from three.

Marquette leads the Big East in three-point shots, making ten or more in the last five games and in six of the seven wins. Providence is generally strong at guarding from the outside, but it doesn’t have the pop to keep up if this gets into a shooting contest from the outside.

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Providence Will Win

There was the blip against Marquette, a loss to Virginia back in Virginia, and that’s been it.

The Friars aren’t as flashy or as fun as the Golden Eagles, but they’re sound, they’ve been hot from the field in January, and they take and make a whole lot of free throws.

In general, Marquette doesn’t seem to care about putting teams on the line – it just turns around and shoots from three – but it gets hit with a whole lot of whistles.

Providence went against type in the loss a few weeks ago. It couldn’t make its shots from the line, it couldn’t rebound well enough, and the defense had its worst game of the year overall – it was the only time it allowed anyone to hit 50% from the field.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Can Providence be a whole lot better than it was the first time around? Can Marquette stay as hot as it’s been over this streak?

Definitely, and not quite.

The Friars find ways to come up with wins, and it starts with being great from the field on a regular basis. Where teams get in trouble against Marquette is when they try to start bombing away to keep up. Providence didn’t do that in early January, and it’s not going to do it here.

It’ll be a whole lot closer, but Marquette is moving the ball around way too well and it’s shooting lights out.

Marquette vs Seton Hall Game Preview

Why Marquette Will Win

Who’s playing better than Marquette?

On a six game winning streak after a rough start, they’re bombing away from three, they’re moving the ball around as well as anyone in the Big East, and they’re getting enough defensive stops to overcome the lack of a consistent inside presence.

Yeah, the offense stalled a bit in the second half of the 73-72 win over Seton Hall a few weeks ago, but the defense made up with it by forcing a slew of turnovers and the free throws were there in the clutch.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Marquette got destroyed on the boards and caught a bit of a break late to pull off the win.

Seton Hall doesn’t have Marquette’s firepower and it doesn’t move the ball around nearly as well, but it rebounds everything despite missing a whole ton of size across the board.

The Pirates have to keep getting to the line and offset Marquette’s threes with lots and lots of free throws. Marquette might hit its free throws, but it doesn’t get enough chances – Seton Hall will have at least ten more attempts.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Marquette isn’t going to be dead-cold for a long stretch like it was in the first meeting.

This might not have the drama or the excitement of the last meeting, but Shaka Smart’s team will have to hold on late – and hit a big three – to push on by and make it four losses in the last five games for the Pirates.

Wisconsin cruises in the second half, beats Marquette 89-76

The Badgers roll over Marquette in a dominant second half

This time in front of a packed house at the Kohl Center, Wisconsin basketball continued their winning ways. The Badgers (7-1) returned home after a four-game winning streak away from Madison and used a second-half scoring outburst to pull away from Marquette (7-2) in an 89-76 win.

The two teams traded leads throughout the first half, as Marquette’s bench kept them in it. Wisconsin finished the half with a flurry, turning a four-point Golden Eagles lead into a three-point Badgers lead with a 7-0 spurt.

After taking a 34-31 lead into the halftime break, the second half belonged to Wisconsin’s star wing Johnny Davis and senior guard Brad Davison. Davis went 4-5 from the field for 11 second-half points as Davison poured in 14.

As a team, Wisconsin shot a blistering 19-27 (70.4%) from the field over the final 20 minutes of action, and put 55 points on the board. After falling behind 36-34 in the opening moments of the half, the Badgers went on an extended 27-11 run to blow the game open.

The Badgers picked up their fifth-straight win and their first home win of the streak. Davis finished with a game-high 25 points on 9-14 from the field, while Davison contributed 20 to the Badger cause. Wisconsin shot 10-24 (41.7%) from three-point land, while the Golden Eagles went just 9-26 (34.6%) from distance.

The Badgers stay home to begin Big Ten play, as they face Indiana on December 8.

This Tom Crean story from a student manager is absolutely wild

Georgia men’s basketball coach Tom Crean is catching heat from former players, student managers, members of the media and more in Athens

Tom Crean, the Georgia men’s basketball head coach who previously led the Marquette and Indiana programs, has been to talk of the town lately in Athens.

Entering his fourth season as coach of the Bulldogs, Crean has slightly improved the team’s overall record each year, but failed to meet the most basic expectations.

Crean still has not reached a postseason and likely would have missed the NIT and NCAA’s in 2019 with No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Edwards.

Now, the longtime basketball coach is struggling to find even three or four-star recruits to join him in Athens, as several players exit the program.

At this point, who could blame them? Just Monday, UGA Wire reported on the text Crean sent Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell when he picked Louisville over Crean’s Hoosiers.

In addition, Crean has had his fair share of outbursts while at Georgia.

Now, UGA Wire has learned that Crean reportedly cussed out a student manager in practice for not opening the diet Coke brought to him on the court.

Another student manager called Crean “the worst person you could ever work for” …

With all the stories that have been uncovered on Crean over the years, it makes perfect sense why no basketball recruit would want to come to Georgia right now.

The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have hurt the Dawgs in being able to show recruits the campus of Georgia and in the transfer portal. It is a chaotic time in college basketball, but even with all the excuses Crean has in his book, Georgia can do better.

Feb 27, 2019; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs head coach Tom Crean reacts during the second half against the Auburn Tigers at Stegeman Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Just last week, Crean stated the reason for Sahvir Wheeler leaving the program stemmed from his desire to play closer to home.

Wheeler announced his ‘Top 10’ on Monday, with the vast majority of his schools being twice as far from home as Athens was.

Tom Crean is running this program into the ground faster than a Mecole Hardman kickoff return. If Georgia wants to have any hope of competing in men’s basketball ever again, the time is now to end this atrocious era.

To make matters worse, it appears every former star in the program cannot stand the guy.

This is just embarrassing for Georgia at this point.

Former Oklahoma forward Kur Kuath transferring to Marquette

Former Oklahoma forward Kur Kuath announced on Monday he will be transferring to Marquette.

A strange offseason for a former Sooner has now found it’s resolution, as former Oklahoma forward Kur Kuath announced on Monday that he will be transferring to the Marquette Golden Eagles for the 2021-22 season.

Kuath told reporters back during the season that he intended to pursue a professional career at year’s end and seemed to be following up on that statement by declaring for the NBA draft last week. But, while doing so, he also entered the transfer portal and, evidently, has changed his mind and opted for another year of college basketball.

Kuath had a bit of an up and down season a year ago for the Sooners, seeing his minutes fluctuate throughout the year between being a starter and a bench player. His presence on the defensive end was where he was most effective, frequently disrupting the lane and blocking shots.

Now, he heads to a new home to join the medley of players from last year’s Oklahoma team that will be somewhere else this season including Trey Phipps at Oral Roberts, Victor Iwuakor at UNLV, Brady Manek at North Carolina and De’Vion Harmon at Oregon.

Losing at the buzzer stings, it doesn’t matter how much is at stake. Wisconsin’s 67-65 defeat against rival Marquette was a loss that hurts more than most early-season setbacks.

A final five seconds filled with two critical mistakes — D’Mitrik Trice attempting to draw a charge on a play that was always going to be a block and Micah Potter being pushed off his spot by Justin Lewis — resulted in a buzzer-beating win for the Golden Eagles on a tip-in by Lewis.

Even in the midst of an ugly loss, there were still positives. Freshman guard Johnny Davis looked up to the task offensively and Trice made a pair of clutch offensive plays in the final minute. Here are five takeaways from a heartbreaking defeat in Milwaukee:

D.J. Carton receives waiver from NCAA, immediately eligible at Marquette

Former Ohio State guard D.J. Carton has received a waiver from the NCAA to be immediately eligible at Marquette.

[jwplayer xgQvJL3r]

Former Ohio State guard D.J. Carton has received a waiver from the NCAA to be immediately eligible at Marquette. Carton took some time away from the OSU program to focus on his mental health, then entered the transfer portal and made the decision to transfer after the season ended, eventually landing with the Golden Eagles.

Under current NCAA transfer rules, any undergraduate must sit out a year before being eligible to play unless the player petitions the NCAA for an exception. The process can sometimes be rather lengthy, but in the case of the former high four-star recruit out of Bettendorf, Iowa, it took just a little over two months from the time he transferred to receiving the good news.

After playing most of his freshman year at Ohio State, Carton will have three years remaining at Marquette if he decides to use them all. He averaged 10.4 points, three assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game.
