A former Clemson standout has signed with a new professional team.

The Birmingham Stallions, who won the inaugural USFL Championship this year, announced this week that they have signed former Tiger cornerback Mark Fields.

Fields was waived by the San Francisco 49ers in August 2021 after the 49ers claimed him off waivers from the Houston Texans in March 2021.

Fields originally entered the NFL after signing with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 6, 2019. After spending training camp with the Chiefs, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 31, 2019. He appeared in Minnesota’s first game of the season prior to being waived on Sept. 14, 2019. Fields was later signed to the Vikings practice squad on Sept. 16, where he spent the rest of the season.

In 2020, Fields spent time on the Vikings practice squad and saw action in two games for the team prior to being waived on Dec.16, 2020. He was claimed off waivers by the Texans the following day and saw action in two games for Houston. He was waived by the Texans on March 2, 2021.

A native of Cornelius, N.C., Fields played at Clemson from 2015-18, when he recorded 45 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, quarterback pressure, an interception returned 42 yards and 13 pass breakups in 963 snaps over 48 games (six starts) in his career.

Texans cut cornerbacks Mark Fields, Brandon Williams

The Houston Texans have cut cornerbacks Mark Fields and Brandon Williams, who both played a combined two games and 17 special teams snaps in 2020.

The Houston Texans are making moves to prepare for the new NFL year 2021, which starts March 17.

The Texans announced Wednesday they have cut cornerbacks Brandon Williams and Mark Fields.

Williams, a former Texas A&M product, did not see an activation with the Texans in 2020, and was going to count $850,000 against the Texans’ salary cap. In 2020, Williams played six games for the New York Giants, recording one tackle.

Fields played the final two games of the 2020 season with the Texans after spending Weeks 2-14 with the Minnesota Vikings. The 5-10, 192-pound cornerback collected one combined tackle amid 17 special teams snaps.

With the departures of Fields and Williams, the Texans could be looking to go with younger talent to round out their roster under new coach David Culley.

Texans claim CB Mark Fields off waivers, place G Hjalte Froholdt on COVID-19 reserve

The Houston Texans made a couple of roster moves as they get ready to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15.

The Houston Texans made a couple of roster moves as they gear up for their Week 15 encounter with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Their first was to claim cornerback Mark Fields off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings. Houston then placed him on the exempt/commissioner permission list.

Fields went undrafted in 2019 from Clemson and caught on with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City then traded Fields to the Vikings at the end of preseason for a 2021 seventh-round pick. Fields collected a tackle in three career games with the Vikings.

Houston also placed guard Hjalte Froholdt on COVID-19 reserve. The former Arkansas Razorback has not practiced for the past two days.

Minnesota Vikings Week 9 injury designations: Both starting CBs ruled OUT

The Detroit Lions Week 9 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, have released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Detroit Lions Week 9 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, have released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game and they will be without three corners — including both starters — with a fourth being listed as questionable.

Here’s a look at the Vikings’ full injury designations list.

Ruled OUT/Questionable

Player Position Injury Designation
Cameron Dantzler CB (starter) Concussion OUT
Holton Hill CB (starter) Foot OUT
Mark Fields CB Chest OUT
Harrison Hand CB Hamstring Questionable

Dantzler is still recovering from a nasty concussion suffered in last week’s game, while Hill has been out almost a month with his foot issue. Fields, who is a reserve, suffered a puncture in his chest which will keep him out of this game. Mike Hughes, who was expected to be a starter this year, is on injured reserve.

The Vikings have just four healthy corners currently on their roster, with three of them being rookies and the fourth a former Lion.

First-round pick Jeff Gladney is expected to start, while fifth-round pick Harrison Hand — who is questionable — and seventh-round pick Kris Boyd will compete for the other starting job.

Former Lion Chris Jones — whom the Vikings claimed a few weeks ago — is expected to be the fourth option and will likely make his Vikings debut on Sunday.

No injury designation

Player Position Injury Designation
C.J. Ham FB Shoulder No designation
Adam Thielen WR (starter) Shoulder No designation
Dan Chisena WR Hip No designation

All three offensive skill players were listed on the injury report this week but will be available on Sunday as they will not carry an injury designation into the game.

Vikings Co-DC Adam Zimmer addresses options for Minnesota at nickel corner

Vikings co-defensive coordinator Adam Zimmer talked about Minnesota’s nickel corner position.

The Vikings return a player who has good experience at nickel corner: Mike Hughes.

Despite this, Minnesota co-defensive coordinator Adam Zimmer said he won’t necessarily be the slot corner for the Vikings in 2020.

“Mike has done a good job in the past (at slot) and also has played well outside,” he said, via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press.

According to Andrew Krammer, Zimmer went on to mention a few names who could play in the slot for the team. As expected, Hughes is an option, but Zimmer also brought up Jeff Gladney and Mark Fields, per Krammer.

“We’ll give a few guys opportunities to see what they can do and find the best combination,” Zimmer said.

Gladney makes sense. He’s a physical corner and a first-round draft pick. But Fields was an interesting option for Zimmer to bring up.

Fields signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Kansas City then traded him to Minnesota for a 2021 seventh-round pick. If Fields is able to win the nickel corner spot, it’d be a nice story.
