Could Marcus Mariota be a backup QB option for Cardinals?

Could Marcus Mariota join the Cardinals as a backup?

Soon-to-be former Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota will hit the open market this offseason and will undoubtedly be looking to sign with a team that gives him the best chance to start right away in 2020.

If that opportunity doesn’t present itself, his next option will be to target a team that has a vulnerability at the position, like the Chicago Bears or Las Vegas Raiders, to name a few.

If he fails to land in situations like those two, his last resort will be to take a backup job on a team that has a clear starter, and one of those spots could be the Arizona Cardinals.

In a recent article by CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, he says a “well-connected NFL source” believes that Mariota could land with the Arizona Cardinals as Kyler Murray’s backup.

“Totally fits what they are doing. I think he’d be great with Kyler (Murray).”

Of course, this isn’t based on anything concrete and there is no rumored interest on the Cardinals’ part. This is simply an opinion of La Canfora’s source.

With that said, this kind of move would make sense for Arizona if the price is right.

Mariota would be a solid insurance policy for a dual-threat quarterback like Murray in the event of an injury. The Oregon product has the kind of athleticism that makes him a perfect fit in the Cardinals’ offense and would allow them to keep running their offense without missing a beat.

The former No. 2 overall pick could also help in the development of Murray during his second season in the NFL.

However, Mariota might not exactly be a fan of joining the Cardinals, as they have an established starter who the team spent the No. 1 overall pick on in the 2019 NFL Draft and won’t be abandoning anytime soon.

Adding to that, Arizona doesn’t have a ton of talent on offense for Mariota even if he does get playing time, and the Cardinals have a lot of work to do in shoring up an offensive line that allowed 50 sacks last season.

So, is Mariota going to the Cardinals absolutely out of the question?

No, but Arizona is a team that should be much further down on his list of desired destinations if he’s trying to get back to being a starter as soon as possible.

Perfect draft pick and free agent for every Chargers positional need

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez identifies the ideal free agent and draft pick for the Los Angeles Chargers’ most pressing needs.

The Chargers’ list of needs will fluctuate between free agency, which kicks off next week and the NFL draft at the end of April.

With more money to spend than previous years, they will have enough to spend on big-name free agents. The draft will also offer several opportunities to add the talent to fill out the bigger holes on their roster.

With that, we find a draft prospect and free agent to fill each of Los Angeles’ biggest needs this offseason.

Nose tackle

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Draft – Davon Hamilton, Ohio State

Hamilton, the 6-foot-3 and 320 pounder is a seasoned veteran who is a space-eater to dominate against the run, as well as someone that can get to the quarterback with a powerful punch and bullrush. In 54 career games where he started 17 of them, Hamilton amassed 66 tackles, 33 quarterback pressures, 21 tackles for loss and eight sacks, six of those coming in the 2019 season.

Free agency – Beau Allen

At 6-foot-2 and 333 pounds, Allen has the functional strength to occupy blocks, has a desirable mentality for the position, brings energy, plays hard and gives terrific pursuit effort. After spending the first four seasons of his career with the Eagles, Allen played the last two with the Bucs as a rotational defender where he amassed 40 tackles, four tackles for loss and four quarterback hits.

5 QBs Bears could target in free agency

The Bears are looking to add to their quarterback room this offseason, and there are no shortage of options in a stacked free agent class.

The Bears are looking to add to their quarterback room this offseason, and there are no shortage of options in a stacked free agent class.

While the Bears aren’t like in the running for the services of the likes of Tom Brady or Philip Rivers, there are still plenty of options out there. But with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s future in doubt, general manager Ryan Pace needs to address the position.

Chicago has been linked to several possible trades at quarterback, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were more involved in the trade market than free agency given their salary cap situation.

But if the Bears hope to find a quarterback in free agency, here are five possibilities.

1. Teddy Bridgewater

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimately the cream of the crop on this list might be out of the Bears’ price range. Bridgewater took full advantage of his opportunity in New Orleans, where he filled in adamantly for an injured Drew Brees. A former first-round pick, Bridgewater’s performance last season is going to get him paid this offseason.

While many have dubbed Teddy Bridgewater a perfect fit in Chicago, the Bears likely won’t be able to afford Bridgewater. According to Spotrac, Bridgewater’s market value is $20 million. But you have to wonder if the value will increase should a bidding war ensue.

The one free agent every NFL team should target

With free agency upon us, the season of hope looms in the NFL. Who is a critical target in free agency for each NFL franchise?

NFL Draft: Five years later, grading the 2015 first-round picks

Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota and others from the 2015 first round have left a lot to be desired.

The 2015 NFL Draft produced many players who were considered expendable by their teams long before the 2020 season. It is the classic example of how much of a guessing game the draft process can be. This first round will go down as forgettable as opposed to memorable.

32. Patriots: Malcom Brown

Malcom Brown was drafted out of Texas. The defensive lineman spent four seasons with the Patriots before having his fifth year option declined. He wound up in New Orleans. Brown had 8.5 sacks as a Patriot and added two with the Saints. Can’t take away the two Super Bowl rings he has. Grade: C

The one free agent every NFL team should target

With free agency upon us, the season of hope looms in the NFL. Who is a critical target in free agency for each NFL franchise?

Hope is a powerful emotion.

One of the reasons that the National Football League manages to dominate the sports conversation year-round is how it packages and sells hope to its fans. Through free agency, the draft, and then schedule releases, the league manages to build up a strong sentiment of hope in virtually every single fan base as the crescendo builds to the start of a new season.

When free agency kicks off in just under a week, 32 fan bases will start to believe that their team is putting together a winning roster, and that this year will finally be the year.

Of course, we know it does not always work out that way. There are many teams that have “won the off-season” but such victories do not always translate into Super Bowl banners.

But with free agency nearly upon us, let hope live on.

Here is a free agency acquisition for each of the 32 NFL teams to strongly target next week. Given how team needs overlap, there are a few names listed twice. Scheme fit and salary cap considerations play a critical role in these selections (looking at you Pittsburgh and Minnesota). They are grouped by division, and in alphabetical order. Additionally, these are all additions. Many teams have in-house needs that need to be addressed first, and for the most part those are discussed in the team’s write-up.

Buffalo Bills: Robby Anderson, WR (New York Jets)

(Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports)

The Buffalo Bills took a big step forward in Josh Allen’s second season as a quarterback in the National Football League. While Allen still has room to grow as a quarterback, acquisitions such as Cole Beasley and John Brown helped Allen become a better timing- and rhythm-based passer.

One area where Allen could stand to improve is in the deep passing game. Among qualified passers last season, Allen ranked 23rd (out of 24) in Pro Football Focus’ adjusted completion percentage on downfield throws (defined as throws of 20 yards or more downfield). While the vertical passing game was a strength of Allen’s coming out of the University of Wyoming, that aspect of Buffalo’s offense was lacking last year.

Beasley and Brown were solid acquisitions for the Bills, but adding Anderson would give the Buffalo offense a huge jolt, specifically in the downfield passing game. Anderson has been a dangerous vertical threat for the New York Jets the past few seasons, and according to PFF’s grading he has the 15th best grade in the NFL on throws of 20 yards or more downfield since 2016. In addition, last year he was targeted six times on throws of 20 yards or more over the middle, and he caught four of those passes, three of which went for touchdowns.

Adding Anderson would give Allen a vertical option downfield, while creating space for Beasley, Brown and emerging tight end Dawson Knox room to operate in the intermediate passing game. Plus, it would wrestle a valuable commodity away from a division rival.

Miami Dolphins: Kyle Van Noy, OLB (New England Patriots)

(Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports)

The Miami Dolphins have three first round selections in the 2020 NFL Draft, and a number of needs they can address. Offensive line, every level of the defense and of course quarterback are positions most commonly linked with the Dolphins with those three early-round selections.

Adding Van Noy in free agency would enable the Dolphins to address a position other than EDGE/OLB with one of those selections. Players like K’Lavon Chaisson from LSU and Zack Baun are familiar names associated with Miami, but Van Noy would give head coach Brian Flores an experienced linebacker who can function both as a pass rusher off the edge or as an outside linebacker in space.

Van Noy seemed to be a potential bust after being selected in the second round by the Detroit Lions in the 2014 draft. Van Noy was then acquired by the New England Patriots via a trade, in which the Patriots acquired the linebacker and a seventh round pick in exchange for just a sixth round selection. But during the past few years in New England, Van Noy has settled into a hybrid role in the Patriots’ defense much more suited for his abilities. On any given down you can see him rushing the passer off the edge, dropping into coverage in space, or even aligning on the inside and letting players like Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower attack the pocket on the outside.

Flores has seen up close and personally what Van Noy can bring to a defense, and how he can be best utilized in the NFL. Acquiring a player with his trait set will allow Miami to address other positions of need early in the draft

New England Patriots: Hunter Henry, TE (Los Angeles Chargers)

(Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports)

Obviously the Patriots are one of those aforementioned teams that have some decisions to make about their own free agents before looking outward. Van Noy, as previously discussed, is a free agent who plays a critical role on their defense. Other defensive free agents include Collins and free safety Devin McCourty, as well as left guard Joe Thuney.

And of course there is that Tom Brady guy.

Regardless of how the organization deals with those decisions, tight end remains a massive hole for this team. The decision by Rob Gronkowski to retire last season late in free agency left the franchise behind the eight ball when it came to acquiring a veteran player before the draft. A year ago the Patriots tried to sign Jared Cook during free agency, but according to Mike Reiss of ESPN the uncertain status of Gronkowski had Cook look elsewhere. Then during the draft, the Patriots passed on picking a tight end despite the general consensus that the 2019 tight end class was a very strong group.

Instead, New England tried to piece the position together on the secondary free agency market, with players like Benjamin Watson and Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, as well as relying on younger players already on the roster like Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse. That experiment failed, and the tight ends in New England failed to come anywhere close to the production the team lost with Gronkowski’s retirement.

This year, the picture looks much different. The rookie tight end class has some questions, and that makes Henry a very enticing option. The Chargers tight end has struggled with injuries, but when healthy he is a very impressive option in the passing game, and he can also contribute as a blocker which is something the Patriots value at the position. Adding Henry and then drafting a tight end later in the draft would put New England in position to finally restock their tight end room.

New York Jets: Amari Cooper, WR (Dallas Cowboys)

(Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports)

Last off-season the New York Jets were active in free agency by making two big splash signings: Linebacker C.J. Mosley and running back Le’Veon Bell. While those acquisitions made headlines, they failed to translate into wins on the field. The Jets started the season with four-straight losses (hampered in large part by illness sidelining quarterback Sam Darnold) and they were 1-7 at the midway point of their season.

But they finished strong, winning six of their final eight games, and that has brought a bit of hope back to Gang Green. But they still have holes to address on both sides of the football. They need to add some help up front on the offensive line – and many expect that the Jets will draft one of the “big four” offensive tackles with the 11th overall selection – and they could use some help at cornerback on the defensive side of the football.

Additionally, they could use help at the wide receiver spot. Bringing Robby Anderson back would make sense, but even then they could use some help. Especially if Anderson leaves town, however, a player with Cooper’s skill-set would make a great deal of sense for the Jets. If you look at the growth the Cowboys saw in Dak Prescott after acquiring Cooper, you will see what a WR with the ability to consistently get separation can mean for a quarterback. Cooper has been a well-rounded route runner since his time at Alabama, and his ability to get separation will give Darnold some big windows to attack in the passing game, boosting not only his play but the level of execution for the entire Jets’ offense.

Marcus Mariota signs with Redskins in CBS Sports bold prediction

Would Marcus Mariota be a fit with the Washington Redskins?

One of the teams that hasn’t been discussed at all as a potential landing for soon-to-be former Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota is the Washington Redskins.

In an article making bold predictions for some of the more intriguing free agents this offseason, CBS Sports’ John Breech has Mariota signing with the team that holds the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft.

If Ron Rivera has made one thing clear during his first two months as coach of the Redskins, it’s that he’s not completely sold on Dwayne Haskins as his quarterback. Not only has Rivera been non-committal about making Haskins his starter for 2020, but he’s even mentioned the possibility of bringing in competition. Although it seems highly unlikely that the Redskins would draft a quarterback in the first round for the second consecutive year — and I don’t think owner Dan Snyder would let them due to his close ties to Haskins — it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Rivera bring in a veteran, which is where Mariota comes in.

Breech believes that Mariota could challenge second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins for the starting job in training camp, which is the type of situation the former No. 2 overall pick should be targeting in free agency.

While it’s true Haskins’ future is a bit cloudy at the moment with a new regime in Washington, the Ohio State product did make significant strides towards the end of last season and his stock is certainly going up.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt for the Redskins to bring in another quarterback to push him, and if that veteran quarterback was unable to win the starting job, he could help in the development of Haskins.

Mariota will have multiple suitors for his services this offseason, but I’m not sure a scenario in which he has to unseat a potential franchise quarterback that was drafted in the first round last year is the best fit.

Adding to that, there aren’t exactly a lot of pieces in Washington to surround Mariota with that would put him in the best position to succeed. There will likely be better options out there.

Backup QB Odds: Handicapping the passers Washington could sign in free agency

The Redskins will definitely sign a QB in free agency and give him a chance to compete for the top spot, but who will they choose to sign?

Despite having a second-year quarterback in the building, working tirelessly to get better and improve on his rookie season, the Washington Redskins are likely to find a second signal-caller to add to the roster this offseason, be it in free agency or the NFL Draft.

That doesn’t mean that the Redskins are going to look to replace Dwayne Haskins as the QB1, but they absolutely will find someone that can compete with him for the starting job, while coming on a relatively team-friendly contract. Head coach Ron Rivera has been clear about that much; he mentioned the desire to bring in a veteran quarterback in his introductory press conference, and he harked at the combine that there will be a “very competitive” competition in the QB room this offseason.

So who might the Redskins be looking at? Who are a few players that check both of those boxes, and aren’t above a trip to Washington to compete with a young gun who could potentially leave them riding the pine? Back by popular demand, it’s our handicapping breakdown. For sports gamblers, you know the deal. Should you need a refresher on how the odds work, you can find one here.

NOTE: The goal of this exercise is to consider the realistic options that are on the table for the Redskins — realistic being the operative word. Washington isn’t looking to sign a star quarterback that is going to demand $20 million or more per season, so we can removed names like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, Ryan Tannehill, and Dak Prescott.

Jacoby Brissett — Indianapolis Colts (+225)

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – DECEMBER 22: Jacoby Brissett #7 of the Indianapolis Colts against the Carolina Panthers at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 22, 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

The Colts made great use of Jacoby Brissett in 2019 after they were forced to ask him to step in for the recently retired Andrew Luck and lead their highly-competent roster with little notice. While he did a great job to keep the Colts in playoff contention deep into the season, his statistics didn’t jump out at you — he averaged less than 200 passing yards per game, with just 18 total touchdowns and six interceptions.

His ability to lead the locker room was what the franchise most admired about him, but they may not have as big of a need for that going forward, depending on what happens in free agency, or the draft. The Colts are believed to be major players when it comes to some of the top FA QBs, like Rivers, Brady, or Tannehill. There are also some expectations for Indianapolis to look at drafting a QB should they come up short in free agency.

A move to Washington could be in the cards for Brissett. We know that he has the skillset to be a competent starting QB in the NFL, and he would undoubtedly push Haskins in a competition once camp rolls around. If we were to compare his 2019 form to Haskins’ 2019 form, it would be easy to crown Brissett the QB1 right now, but should we see some anticipated growth from the Redskins’ rookie this offseason, that would be a great battle for the top spot on the depth chart.

With (+225) odds, if you wagered $100, you would win $225 in profit.

Could the Eagles be a landing spot for Marcus Mariota in free agency?

Eagles could be a landing spot for Marcus Mariota in free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles could be in the market for a backup quarterback, while Marcus Mariota currently needs a job.

A matchup that was only dreamed of when Chip Kelly was the head coach could be a reality in free agency according to Pro Football Focus.

With Carson Wentz’s rugged style of play, it’s not out of the question for the Eagles to be on the lookout for a solid backup with big-game experience.

Mariota’s ability to scramble also means he could be utilized in trick-play or gimmick situations similar to the way the Saints use Taysom Hill.

Mariota is rumored to have some interest in free agency from the Bears, but if he can’t land another starting job, Philadelphia could be a place where Mariota is able to land and continue to learn the quarterback position under a solid group of coaches brought in to help Carson Wentz take the next step.

ESPN believes Bears must absolutely sign this free agent QB

The Bears are in the market for a veteran QB, and ESPN believes that Marcus Mariota would be a perfect match for the Bears this free agency.

The Bears have a quarterback problem. One that has been a hot topic of conversation during the offseason thus far.

Even if general manager Ryan Pace is content with another year of Mitchell Trubisky, the Bears are expected to add an experienced veteran quarterback to compete with Trubisky, as he’s currently the only quarterback under contract in Chicago.

ESPN’s Ben Linsey believes that Marcus Mariota would be a perfect match for the Bears this free agency.

The Bears are in a tough spot. Despite their effort to make Mitchell Trubisky “the guy,” he has been a below-average quarterback in all three of his seasons as a starter in the NFL. They need to find a replacement, but they have one of the worst cap situations in the league and no draft picks in Rounds 1, 3 or 4 of the upcoming NFL draft.

Mariota is one free-agent option at quarterback who could be in their price range after being benched through six weeks of the 2019 season. Before this season, however, he was coming off two strong showings, ranking 12th among quarterbacks in grade in 2017 and 17th during the 2018 season. As with Ryan Tannehill, Mariota belongs to the middle tier of quarterbacks who can move up or down in a season based on their environment. The hope for Chicago would be to draw out a ceiling performance in Matt Nagy’s system.

Mariota, also a former No. 2 overall selection, didn’t pan out for the Titans, where he was replaced by another veteran QB in Ryan Tannehill. Perhaps Mariota could see second life in a similar situation in Chicago, where Trubisky will get one last chance to prove there’s something worth salvaging.

There’s a belief that since Trubisky and Mariota share representation that Mariota to Chicago isn’t even a possibility, considering Trubisky is already under contract.

Whether it’s Mariota or not, the Bears will indeed bring in an experienced veteran quarterback that can challenge Trubisky — and possibly replace him.
