Cardinals non-tender QB David Blough, WR Antoine Wesley

Both are now unrestricted free agents.

The Arizona Cardinals had a pair of players who were restricted free agents, had the Cardinals used a qualifying tender on either.

However, the Cardinals elected not to extend either quarterback David Blough or wide receiver Antoine Wesley a restricted free agent tender.

They now are unrestricted free agents.

Wesley did not play last season as he was on injured reserve. He caught 19 passes and scored three touchdowns in 2021.

Blough was a late-season addition last year and started two games to end the year.

Teams can use a first-round tender to keep a restricted free agent. It pays the player $6.005 million. The player can negotiate deals elsewhere but the original team can match the offer and, if the offering team is allowed to sign him, the original team would get a first-round pick as compensation.

There is a second-round tender at $4.304 million, an original-round tender at $2.743 million and a right-of-first-refusal tender at $2.627 million.

In all cases the original team can match the offer of another team.

Neither Wesley nor Blough figure to be major parts of the 2023 season, so paying them that much didn’t make sense.

They still can re-sign with the Cardinals or sign elsewhere without restriction.

Cardinals lose WR Antoine Wesley to season-ending surgery

He will have season-ending surgery and will not return from injured reserve,

The Arizona Cardinals will not get receiver Antoine Wesley back from injured reserve. Despite being designated to return last week after missing four games with a hip/groin injury, according to a report last week, he suffered a setback in his return, suffering a quad injury.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Monday,  “Antoine will be out. His injury last week unfortunately was season-ending.”

The team announced Wesley underwent season-ending surgery later in the day.

He should be back in 2023. He will be an exclusive rights free agent after the season.

He anticipates a return in 2023, as he had a message for fans on social media.

Wesley’s season ends without having played a down.

The unfortunate thing is the Cardinals already designated him to return from injured reserve. Teams can only designate a total of eight players to return this season. Wesley already counts as one of them even though he will not return.

WR Antoine Wesley injured again, having MRI for quad injury

Coming back from a hip/groin injury, it is feared that Wesley has torn his quadriceps and that his season could be over.

It appeared that the Arizona Cardinals were going to get wide receiver Antoine Wesley back after missing the first four weeks of the season. He had a groin/hip injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Now, after being designated to return and practicing this week, he apparently has a new injury and it could cost him the rest of the season.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, it is feared that Wesley has torn his quadriceps. He is having an MRI on it Friday.

Since he has already been designated to return, the three-week window to be reactivated has already opened. If he is unable to come back by the end of the three weeks, he will remain on IR for the remainder of the season.

Wesley had 19 receptions last season for 208 yards and three touchdowns. There was optimism he would be able to expand his role this season and was having a good offseason and beginning of training camp before his injury.

This injury is yet another setback a wide receiver room that has taken several hits this season.

At minimum, he is surely not going to be reinstated to the roster to play against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday. His season might be over before it even begins.

Antoine Wesley, Charles Washington go on IR, will miss at least 4 games

Wesley has a groin/hip injury and Washington has a chest injury. The earliest they can return is in Week 5.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a few roster moves Thursday. Two were moving players from the active roster to injured reserve.

They placed receiver Antoine Wesley and safety Charles Washington on injured reserve, meaning they will be out at least the first four games of the season.

Wesley suffered a groin/hip injury early in training camp and made progress but still needs time to recover. There was a possibility he would need surgery.

Washington injured his chest in the team’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The earliest they can return is is Week 5, when the Cardinals host the Philadephia Eagles.

They had to make the active roster initially to be eligible to return at all this season. Players placed on IR before final rosters are set are done for the season. By waiting until after active rosters were set, both could be eligible to return. Teams are able to designate up to eight players from IR/NFI this year.

WR Antoine Wesley about 1-2 weeks out from return but still ‘touch-and-go’

Wesley has a groin/hip injury that could need surgery and could cause him to miss a significant amount of time.

The Arizona Cardinals have been waiting to see what will happen with receiver Antoine Wesley, who has been out with a groin/hip injury. He is nearing a potential return.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Monday that Wesley is looking at about one to two weeks before his return, although he did indicate that things would still be “touch-and-go” once he gets back on the field, “just to see how he holds up.”

They have been waiting to see whether Wesley will need surgery or not. Kingsbury has not said it explicitly but it appears that if he needs surgery that it would keep him out a significant amount of time, which could impact whether he is placed on injured reserve before or after final cuts.

If he is placed on IR before final cuts, his season will be over. If he makes the final 53-man roster initially, he can be placed on IR and be eligible to return after four games.

There are two weeks before the Cardinals must make final cuts. Wesley is a receiver expected to be a lock for the roster if he is healthy.

Cardinals waiting to see if WR Antoine Wesley needs surgery

The team is waiting to see over the next week if he will need surgery or if he can rehab and come back quickly.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Antoine Wesley has been out of practice with an injury to his groin and hip area. He had an MRI and they are waiting to see what is next.

He might need surgery.

“With Antoine, we’re really waiting to see how he responds,” Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Friday. “Then we’ll know probably within the next week if they’ll need to do any sort of procedure or he can rehab and get back to us fairly quickly.”

Wesley, who filled at the ‘X’ receiver position last season after DeAndre Hopkins’ injury, was expected to be the Cardinals’ No. 5 receiver on the roster and No. 4 while Hopkins serves his six-game suspension.

Cardinals sign WR Marcell Ateman in wake of Antoine Wesley injury

Ateman is a former seventh-round pick of the Raiders.

The Arizona Cardinals added receiver depth on Thursday as Antoine Wesley is set to miss some time in training camp with a hip/groin injury. They announced the signing of former Las Vegas wide receiver Marcell Ateman.

Ateman spent all or part of the last four seasons with the Raiders after being drafted by them in the seventh round in 2018 out of Oklahoma State.

The 6-4, 215-lb wideout had 20 catches for 270 yards and a touchdown in 2018-2019. He spent part of 2020 on the Raiders’ practice squad and appeared in one game last season and spent time on the practice squad as well.

Wesley is expected to be out at least a week so the team needed more depth at receiver.

To make room for Ateman, the Cardinals released tackle Eric Smith.

WR Antoine Wesley has new uniform number

Wesley gets his fourth number in less than a year, taking Christian Kirk’s old No. 13, as rookie TE Trey McBride wanted No. 85.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Antoine Wesley enters his second season with the team. With a recent number change, he will have his fourth different number.

The team announced the numbers for their eight picks for the 2022 NFL draft. Their first selection, tight end Trey McBride, will wear No. 85.

That, however, was the number Wesley wore most of last season.

He now has No. 13, vacated by receiver Christian Kirk, who signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent this offseason.

He joins most of the team’s other receivers in the teens.

Perhaps this will be a number he can wear a while.

He started last year with No. 33 when he signed during training camp.

He later changed to No. 84, which he wore with the Baltimore Ravens.

Once receiver Rondale Moore, the Cardinals’ 2021 second-round selection who got no. 85 to start the offseason, made a deal with punter Andy Lee to get No. 4, Wesley occupied No. 85, which was the number he wore in college at Texas Tech.

Now he will wear No. 13 and hopefully remain there, possibly becoming of of the team’s core receivers this year.

WR Antoine Wesley officially re-signs with Cardinals

The exclusive rights free agent will return after catching 19 passes and scoring three touchdowns last season in his first NFL experience.

The Arizona Cardinals added a wide receiver to the roster, but this addition was always going to happen. The team announced that receiver Antoine Wesley signed his qualifying tender.

Wesley was an exclusive rights free agent, meaning that, if the Cardinals offered him a contract, the only way for him to play in the NFL is to sign it.

Wesley was added to the team last year in training camp and got important playing time after DeAndre Hopkins’ season-ending knee injury.

Getting his first NFL game experience in 2021, he appeared in 15 games and started four. He caught 19 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns.

He is expected to be in the mix for playing time this coming season.
