Texas among top schools for 2023 CB Malik Muhammad

Texas makes the cut for one of the top defensive backs in the state.

Four-star 2023 cornerback Malik Muhammad is one of the most sought-after prospects in the state of Texas.

247Sports ranks Muhammad as the No. 8 player in the state and a top 50 player in the nation. He has picked up an impressive 43 offers from some of the premier programs around the country.

The South Oak Cliff product announced he is narrowing down his recruitment to six schools. Alabama, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Texas A&M and Texas all made the cut for the talented defensive back.

Muhammad went into more detail with On3Sports’ Hayes Fawcett about what stands out about his final schools. Here is what he had to say about Texas.

“I feel like they are on the rise with the new coaching of Coach Sark and the rest of the staff,” Muhammad said. “They also have one of the largest NIL platforms and they are an in-state school.”

Texas is doing a great job of selling the upwards trajectory of the program to recruits along with using NIL to its advantage.

Michigan football makes top 6 for elite 2023 CB from Texas

Things are starting to heat up on the recruiting trail! #GoBlue

While Michigan football appears to be slow jamming the 2023 recruiting cycle, several of its top targets are still on the board. That means that the class the program is hoping to build will certainly be filled out later, rather than sooner.

On Wednesday, the Wolverines got some good news about one of its targets down in the Lone Star state.

2023 Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff four-star cornerback Malik Muhammad is rated by On3 as the No. 26 player in the country, regardless of position. At 5-foot-11, 172-pounds, he’s not the tallest corner, but On3 reports he has a 6-foot-3 wingspan.

While the Wolverines weren’t getting mentioned by many in the national sphere, Michigan ended up making Muhammad’s top six, along with perceived favorite Texas A&M, Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Miami.

More on what Muhammad brings to the table, according to On3:

Long-armed corner who excels in press-man coverage with the ball skills to create turnovers. Shows off his ball skills with the ability to high point the football while playing receiver. Has a 6’3”+ wingspan despite being around 6-feet in height. Ran an electronically-timed 4.61 40-yard dash in 2021, showing good speed relative to other corner prospects. This speed and burst translates to the track as well as he participates in the 400m/800m/1600m relays as well as the high jump, long jump and triple jump. One of the most natural corners in the country that will need to add more mass to his frame in order to hold up with the physicality of the game at the next level. Helped his high school team to a historic state title as a junior.

Muhammad is being recruited by ace Steve Clinkscale. Both On3 and 247Sports indicate that Texas A&M is in the lead for his services.

Florida football re-offered this 2023 top 50 cornerback

4-star CB Malik Muhammad has been re-offered by the Florida Gators’ new staff.

Billy Napier made defensive back recruiting a priority from the minute he became the new head coach of the Florida Gators. The first big splash came with the signing of five-star safety Kamari Wilson during the 2022 early signing period, and the Gators have since been in the conversation for several of the top defensive backs in the class of 2023.

One of those DBs is South Oak Cliff (Dallas, Texas) cornerback Malik Muhammad, who currently ranks No. 41 overall on the On3 Consensus. If the name sounds familiar that’s because Muhammad played his sophomore season in Florida at IMG Academy. A Texas native, Muhammad figured that he could make the same name for himself back at home as a junior and senior. Betting on himself paid off as he led his team to a state championship.

Napier has targeted several players from IMG early on, so it’s unsurprising to see the Gators follow a transfer and re-offer him under the new staff (Dan Mullen’s group offered last April). Muhammad thanked the Gators on social media for the second offer, tagging Napier, defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, and defensive personnel analyst Joe Hamilton.

Muhammad is hoping to be decided by the summer. A July announcement could be in the works, which means that UF has only a few months to convince him to come back to Florida.

Texas and Texas A&M could enjoy a bit of a home-field advantage, but Muhammad’s most recent trips have been to Alabama and Miami. Notre Dame was considered an early leader at one point as well.

If the Gators want to be one of the teams in the mix when Muhammad makes his decision, they’ll need to get him on campus. He’s expected to begin taking some unofficial visits soon after attending an Under Armour training camp for elite prospects earlier in the month.

Muhammad is ranked  No. 6 at his position on the On3 Consensus, but the service’s stand-alone rankings have him as the No. 2 cornerback in the class of 2023. A consensus top 100 recruit by all four major services, Muhammad is likely to be one of the most followed recruits early on in the cycle given his short timeline.

A comprehensive look at some of Oklahoma Football’s recent offers

Oklahoma has been busy on the recruiting trail. Here’s a look at some of the recent offers OU has sent out to 2023 and 2024 prospects.

National Signing Day is swiftly approaching on Feb. 2 and that means the 2022 class is just about finished.

With that date within shouting distance, it’s time for Oklahoma to turn its collective attention to the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes.

OU has been busy sending out offers and looking to establish momentum in both of their upcoming classes. Here’s a look at some of the names the Sooners have offered recently.

Top 50 2023 cornerback Malik Muhammad gets re-offer from new-look Oklahoma Sooners coaching staff

As new cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator Jay Valai settles in, the Oklahoma Sooners re-offer 2023 4-star cornerback Malik Muhammad.

The changes on the coaching staff created some changes in the direction that their recruiting efforts would take. Brent Venables and crew have made a concerted effort to target defensive talent and get into recruiting battles with the big guns of the SEC.

Though the coaching change led to some decommitments, the incoming staff brought with them relationships from recruiting efforts at their previous jobs. It’s those kinds of relationships that led the Sooners to landing 2022 four-star players Nick Evers, Jayden Gibson, and Jaren Kanak. Relationships with Brent Venables and Jeff Lebby played a huge part in getting them to Oklahoma.

And this could be the case with another four-star target as cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator Jay Valai takes his place in the Oklahoma Sooners hierarchy.

Valai’s previous efforts on the recruiting trail with 2023 four-star cornerback Malik Muhammad out of South Oak Cliff High School could net the Sooners a top-flight defensive prospect to add to their defense. Valai was the lead recruiter for Nick Saban’s crew at Alabama for Muhammad’s services and as we saw with Kanak, that relationship could be the difference in Muhammed choosing Oklahoma over Alabama.

Muhammad is a two-way player for South Oak Cliff, playing wide receiver and defensive back. On defense, he played boundary corner, in the slot, part of two and single-high safety looks.

At cornerback, he was aggressive in press looks at the line of scrimmage. He was physical in his initial jab and releases quickly when he reads the run play coming to his side. He’s a willing and aggressive tackler. Able to come up from the any spot and sift through the trash to find the ball carrier, wrap up and make the tackle. He brings a physical game to the catch point, often separating the receiver from the ball on arrival. Muhammad displays excellent ball skills. Natural hands catcher who made plays deep down the field as both a receiver and defensive back. He tracks the ball well and can go back and get it when it’s going over his head. The four-star player offers ability as a punt returner as well. Is methodical and elusive with the ball in his hands.

Penn State football recruiting: Players to watch in Class of 2023

Penn State football recruiting efforts focusing on the Class of 2023

We are nearing the home stretch of the college football season and Penn State has still kept busy with their recruiting process.

The Nittany Lions currently have their eyes on a few players for their class of 2023. Let’s take a look at the top two players.

The first one is a four-star cornerback out of Dallas, Texas in Malik Muhammad. He recently dropped his top 12 schools and Penn State made the list. Muhammad would be a big addition to a team that will potentially be losing a good amount of secondary players after this season to the draft.

Penn State will compete with other big schools for Muhammad, including Alabama and Georgia. If they are able to land him, that would be a massinve recruit for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State will currently have five defensive backs from the 2022 class, led by safety Cristian Driver, son of former Green Bay Packers legendary wide receiver Donald Driver.

They also currently have one defensive back in the 2023 class in three-star cornerback from Bridgeville, Pennsylvania in Lamont Payne.

The next player to keep an eye on is three-star edge rusher out off edge rusher out of Oradell, New Jersey in De’Juan (DJ) Samuels.

Penn State has a history of producing edge rushers for the NFL, and Samuels would be a nice addition to a team that develops edge rushers very well.

Samuels has been tearing it up in high school. He recently broke his high school sack record as a junior.

Samuels has interest from several teams across the country, including Penn State as well as Rutgers, which he discusses over at Rutgers Wire.

The Nittany Lions have a bright future ahead of them. If they are able to land one or even both Muhammad and Samuels, that would be a huge boost to their defensive recruiting process.

Oklahoma offers four-star CB recruit Malik Muhammad

The Oklahoma Sooners offer another four-star cornerback in Malik Muhammad of the 2023 recruiting cycle.

The Oklahoma Sooners are among several top schools that made an offer for four-star recruit, Malik Muhammad. The Florida native would add length to the cornerback position in Alex Grinch’s system. Muhammad would be a tough opponent against elite receivers in the Big 12.

The 6-0, 170-pound corner does a stellar job jamming at the line of scrimmage and playing the ball not the receiver. Great instincts and route recognition. Possesses outstanding ball-tracking ability to undercut passes. His lean build lends to an excellent high-point ability working over-the-top of receivers. His competitive nature would make an outstanding addition to OU’s secondary.
