Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama discusses Madison Square Garden debut ahead of game vs. Knicks: ‘Pretty incredible’

Ahead of the San Antonio Spurs’ matchup against the New York Knicks, Victor Wembanyama spoke about making his Madison Square Garden debut.

The San Antonio Spurs take on+ on the New York Knicks tonight and, in the process, will also be looking to bounce back from an ugly 152-111 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Devin Vassell will likely miss the game, so the rest of the Spurs lineup will have to step up in his absence, including rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama.

But an interesting subplot of the contest will be Wembanyama’s NBA debut at Madison Square Garden, an area often heralded for stars’ big-time performances under the bright light of the Big Apple. It’s one of the biggest markets in the world, and everyone knows it.

Ahead of the game, Wembanyama spoke about his feelings about being at the Garden.

LIV Golf hires former Madison Square Garden executive as new Chief Operating Officer

LIV Golf has a new executive after plenty of C-Suite turnover over the last two years.

LIV Golf has a new executive.

A day after the completion of the 2023 team championship event at Trump National Doral, the upstart circuit named Lawrence Burian as its new Chief Operating Officer. Performance 54’s Gary Davidson had been serving as the acting COO after Atul Khosla left the position in December of 2022.

Burian will oversee LIV’s day-to-day business operations as well as lead its corporate development and strategy as the league looks to commercialize its 12 teams.

“Lawrence is a proven leader and a proven winner, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him on our executive leadership team,” said LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner Greg Norman in a statement.

Burian formerly spent time as the Executive Vice President with the Madison Square Garden family of companies and has experience across the sports, entertainment, media and hospitality sectors, areas that are crucial to LIV’s product. Before MSG, Burian worked for a decade at Cablevision Systems Corporation, MSG’s former cable, media, sports and entertainment parent company.

“I am excited to join LIV Golf as Chief Operating Officer and look forward to harnessing my more than two decades of senior executive experience to help build on the progress and momentum that is well underway,” said Mr. Burian.

“Adding Lawrence to the LIV executive team is the clearest indication of the next phase of this league’s growth and future aspirations,” said Davidson. “Lawrence is an excellent addition to the Senior Management team and brings a wealth of experience which will be invaluable as we enter the exciting next phase of the business.”

A mic’d-up Josh Hart unleashed a hilariously bad rendition of Don’t Stop Believin’ during Game 4

Josh Hart traded basketball for singing just for a bit during the Knicks’ playoff win over the Cavs on Sunday.

As the New York Knicks went up 3-1 on the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, Josh Hart couldn’t help but have some musical fun on the sideline.

New York’s 102-93 home victory over Cleveland has the team on the cusp of advancing with one more victory, and Hart’s overall strong play this postseason has been a a big boost there.

With the team playing well, Hart showed off his pipes by belting the beloved Journey pop hit “Don’t Stop Believin'” on the sideline at Madison Square Garden.

Hart jokes in the video that if he were a professional singer, he wouldn’t have been a basketball player. We’ll let you be the judge of his singing abilities.

Hart’s not quite as bad compared to some of the people we hear sing everyday, but he might still be a more formidable presence on the court than on the concert stage.

Nonetheless, he’s giving New York fans plenty to sing about as they celebrate an impressive Knicks postseason so far.

Immanuel Quickley joined NBA history with his outrageous performance in Monday’s Knicks win

New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley made HISTORY on Monday night.

New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley had one of the best games that the franchise has ever seen on Monday night.

During the team’s 137-115 home win over the Houston Rockets, Quickley became the Knicks’ first player since Nate Robinson in 2010 to score 40 points, record five-plus assists and shoot for 75 percent during the game, per ESPN.

He’s only the fifth New York player to accomplish this feat.

Quickley also joined NBA history in an elite group of players to have such a night (40-plus points, nine-plus assists, more than 77-percent shooting). His name will now be listed alongside basketball legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

The Knicks are a definite factor in the Eastern Conference, and Quickley’s incredible evening only boosts the team’s 2023 playoff momentum.

After the game, Quickley talked about how nervous he was to knock down the two free throws that gave him his first 40-point game.

You can tell how excited he was to have such a historic night at Madison Square Garden in front of the home crowd.

The crowd clearly appreciated Quickley’s performance and gave him “MVP” chants toward the end of the game. He also got plenty of love from the Knicks bench.

Talk about a historic night for one of New York’s best players.

Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell knocked down an unbelievable 3-pointer while falling on a hobbled ankle

What *can’t* Markquis Nowell do?

Kansas State senior guard Markquis Nowell didn’t let a hobbled ankle keep him from making what’s going to be one of the best 3-pointers of the 2023 men’s NCAA tournament.

As the Wildcats took on the Michigan State Spartans in the Sweet 16 round on Thursday, Nowell went down with a rough-looking ankle injury during the game’s second half and missed a good stretch of time.

Once he left, the Spartans went on a run and got back in the game as Kansas State struggled to adjust without their star guard.

However, Nowell returned with a taped-up ankle and immediately knocked down an equalizing trey that brought the house down at Madison Square Garden.

Nowell has been one of the best stories of this year’s tournament. He sure hasn’t let an unintended critique from Kentucky coach John Calipari keep him from dominating whenever he’s on the court.

As Kansas State fought for a spot in the Elite Eight, the team surely was glad that Nowell could return to the game and stop the bleeding with such a beautiful 3-pointer.

Vols return to Madison Square Garden to play FAU

Tennessee basketball returns to Madison Square Garden for the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee has competed with players from New York throughout its history.

All-America players to play for the Vols with New York roots include Ed Weiner (Brooklyn), Ernie Grunfeld (Forest Hills), Bernard King (Brooklyn), Howard Wood (East Hampton) and Tobias Harris, a Dix Hills native, who plays for the 76ers.

James Dolan defends use of creepy facial recognition, says he may ban liquor at MSG in bizarre interview

This was an incredibly bizarre interview.

James Dolan, CEO and executive chairman of MSG Entertainment Corp., gave a rare and extensive interview earlier Thursday afternoon.

Dolan sat down for a 17-minute segment on FOX’s Good Day New York.

He covered an expansive range of topics ranging from his controversial use of facial recognition technology, ticket resellers and TicketMaster, the Bill of Rights, crime in New York City, the success of the New York Rangers and the health of Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson.

It was a wild interview that was a must-listen for those who plan to attend any games at Madison Square Garden or have privacy concerns about the future of citizen surveillance.

Here is what he said about his facial recognition technology policies:

“Facial recognition is just a technology. I mean, when I walked into the studio, did you recognize my face? Facial recognition. Technology just makes you better at it. The real issue that’s going on here is our policy of not letting attorneys who are suing us into our building until they’re done suing us.”

Dolan then changed the topic for an irrelevant game of whataboutism centered on bail reform in New York.

He added that Madison Square Garden is a private company, though it is worth noting that it receives about $40 million in tax breaks every year.

Later in the segment, he was adamant that he was not going to back down from his policy about using facial recognition technology.

“It’s not only business. If you’ve been sued you know that it’s a personal thing. At Madison Square Garden, if you’re suing us, we’re just asking you: ‘Please don’t come until you’re done with your argument.’ And yes, we’re using facial recognition to enforce that. … What facial recogntion does is recognizes your face and says are you someone who’s on this list.

“It’s very, very useful for security. In fact, Madison Square Garden, I believe, is the most secure venue in the country. … A bakery, a restaurant, you get to say who you serve for whatever reason.

“If there is someone you don’t want to serve, you get to say I don’t want to serve you and if it’s somebody who is suing you or put you out of business or take your money from you, you have a right to be a little unhappy about it.”

He was also asked about reports that New York State Liquor Authority was threatening to take away the liquor license from the venue as a disciplinary action following his ban on several lawyers.

His answer about how he planned to handle this was incredibly shocking:

“They’re being extremely aggressive. They’re saying: ‘We’re going to take away your liquor license.’ So I have a little surprise for them because they’re basically doing this for publicity. So we’re going to give them some publicity. What we’re going to do is we’re going to pick a night, maybe a Rangers game, and we’re going to shut down all the liquor and alcohol in the building. Now this isn’t going to bother me because I’ve been sober 29 years. I don’t need the liquor.

“If you’re grandstanding with the press and threatening my liquor license, I’m going to tell you, ‘You know what? Go ahead. Take away my liquor license.’ People are still going to come to the games. We don’t make all our money on alcohol. Like I said, I’m sober. I’m not a big alcohol fan.”

Dolan said at the stations where the venue typically sells liquor, they will instead have signs with the photo, phone number and email address of the CEO of the NY SLA.

He said that he wants the public to tell the SLA to start working on the “things that matter” like law enforcement. He also criticized New York’s Clean Slate Act.

It is hard to imagine a scenario in which he issues a self-imposed ban on liquor at MSG and it goes well with the fans, but this has now become a developing situation worth following.

Pat Connaughton NBA Tracker: Nov. 28-Dec. 4

That’s more like it.

In a way, this past week can be considered [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag]’s real first week of the season. Before, he still was working his way back into game shape, and his results definitely reflected that. Now, we can talk about things that are more normal for the Milwaukee Bucks guard.

Connaughton began with his best scoring game of the week, totaling 10 points to help beat the New York Knicks on Nov. 30 at Madison Square Garden despite shooting only 4 of 13 from the field. He took a slight step back with eight points in a Dec. 2 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, although he also had two assists. He concluded the week with nine points and five rebounds the next night in a road win over the Charlotte Hornets.

For these three games, Connaughton averaged a steady 9.0 points a game and made an even third of his shots. All that’s left to say is Pat’s back.

However, Giddey has backed Simmons to be a key player in the World Cup and Olympics campaigns, although the two are likely to compete for the same place in the starting five. “Obviously he was dealing with some things with Philly and then [made] a fresh start in Brooklyn,” Giddey said. “People forget that Ben is an All-Star. He’s one of the best players in the league. He’s obviously going to need time to get on his feet, he hasn’t played in the NBA for a long time. I’m excited for what he can do and hopefully soon we can be part of the Boomers together and help Australia win a gold medal,” Giddey continued. -via BasketNews / November 8, 2022
