Mac McClung, NBA Twitter react to Sixers’ Game 1 win over Celtics

Mac McClung and NBA Twitter react to the Philadelphia 76ers knocking off the Boston Celtics in Game 1 on the road.

The Philadelphia 76ers picked up one of the more improbable wins anybody will see when they knocked off the Boston Celtics, 119-115, on the road to take a 1-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals. There was no Joel Embiid to save them in this one, so they called on The Beard.

James Harden delivered one of the best playoff performances he has ever had when he dropped 45 points on 17-for-30 shooting with six assists. He drilled the go-ahead 3 over Al Horford with 8.4 seconds left to lift the Sixers to the win. He was fantastic all night long to ensure Philadelphia earned the win.

Tyrese Maxey added 26 points, and Tobias Harris contributed 18 points and five rebounds. De’Anthony Melton had 17 big points off the bench, and Paul Reed had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Mac McClung and the rest of NBA Twitter gave reactions to the impressive win:

NBA Twitter reacts to Mac McClung, Sixers knocking off Nets in finale

NBA Twitter reacts to Mac McClung and the Philadelphia 76ers knocking off the Brooklyn Nets in the season finale.

The Philadelphia 76ers finished the 2022-23 season with a 134-105 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Neither team played its main players. Considering these teams will meet in the playoffs starting on April 15, the decision makes sense.

The Sixers were led by a trio of players scoring 20 points each. Shake Milton had 20 points and eight assists. Louis King had 20 points. Mac McClung had 20, nine rebounds and nine assists. The Sixers also received 17 points and 10 rebounds from Paul Reed and Dewayne Dedmon had 14 and seven rebounds. Montrezl Harrell had 15 and six rebounds.

McClung stole the show with his all-around play, highlight dunks and layup finishes over traffic. He showed the athleticism that won him the slam dunk contest at All-Star weekend.

NBA Twitter reacted to McClung’s big game for Philadelphia:

Mac McClung discusses time playing for Sixers, plans for the future

Mac McClung discusses his two games playing for the Philadelphia 76ers and his plans moving forward.

NEW YORK — The Philadelphia 76ers finished the 2022-23 season on Sunday when they knocked off the Brooklyn Nets, 134-105, on the road. They finished the season 54-28.

The Sixers sat their top seven players: the starting lineup, De’Anthony Melton and Georges Niang. That allowed young guys such as Mac McClung to get an opportunity.

McClung, who signed a two-way deal with the Sixers before the All-Star break, took advantage of his minutes, He had 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in 33 minutes. It has been a whirlwind for the 2023 slam dunk champion. He played in the G League championship, flew to Atlanta and then Brooklyn in a four-day span.

“Just a blessing, really,” McClung said afterward. “I feel like we were down in Wilmington for so long. It’s hard work down there and it’s a great opportunity for us to get come up here and really just kind of like a reward for all the hard work we’ve done, and really, thanks to coach for letting us play, man. I had the best time out there for us.”

McClung was in the G League all season with the team’s affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, and he worked hard on his game. He won the NBA’s slam dunk contest in Salt Lake City with a scintillating performance and then led the Blue Coats to a title before playing the final two games with the Sixers.

“This year has been just a lot,” he laughed and smiled. “It’s been amazing. It’s all been something to be really grateful for, but it’s like I haven’t stopped. I’ve just been running around here and just trusting the universe and trying to be the best me every day.”

McClung can’t be on the playoff roster because he is on a two-way deal, so he has his plans for a summer of improvement.

“Just stay the course,” he added. “I got my trainers and everybody working on my body, working on my shot, working on my point guard skills, and I think the biggest thing is experience. When you get there and you’ve been there before, that’s another level of confidence and just being sure of yourself.”

Player grades: Paul Reed, role players lead Sixers over Nets in finale

Paul Reed and the role players step up to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the Brooklyn Nets in the season finale.

NEW YORK–The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Barclays Center on Easter Sunday looking to finish the season on the right note as they took on the Brooklyn Nets. What “right note” means is making sure they are all in one piece before they head into the playoffs.

Also, when considering they will face this same Nets team in Game 1 of Round 1, neither team played any of their main rotation pieces. In another game that featured all of the role players, Paul Reed and the Sixers came out on top 134-105 to head into the postseason on a high note. Reed had 17 points and 10 rebounds in some very productive minutes for Philadelphia.

Shake Milton had 20 points and eight assists and Mac McClung had 20 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists to lead the Sixers and Louis King also had 20 points. Dewayne Dedmon added 14 and seven rebounds while Danuel House Jr. added nine points and Jalen McDaniels had eight points.

Here are the player grades following the win:

Doc Rivers evaluates Mac McClung’s Sixers debut in win over Hawks

Doc Rivers evaluates Mac McClung’s Philadelphia 76ers debut in their road win over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Philadelphia 76ers relied on others to provide production while they rested their top six players in a game that meant nothing on Friday. As they visited the Atlanta Hawks, they turned to role players and youngsters.

The Sixers shocked the Hawks, 136-131, in overtime despite trailing at one point by 15. They received contributions from everybody. Jalen McDaniels, Georges Niang and Danuel House Jr. all scored at least 22 points, and Jaden Springer had 19 Montrezl Harrell and others also contributed.

Mac McClung made his Sixers debut and played well in the second half after a shaky first half. McClung was 0-for-2 and committed a turnover in the first half, but he had five points, knocked down a 3 and had a rebound after halftime.

“He tried to do too much with the ball and it’s probably nerves,” coach Doc Rivers told reporters. “They played last night (Thursday), but he’s got great athleticism and he can shoot the ball, too. So that helps him.”

McClung, who signed a two-way deal with the Sixers before the All-Star break and before he won the slam dunk contest, will most likely receive a big opportunity in the season finale on Sunday. Considering the Sixers again have nothing to play for, McClung will have another chance to show what he can do at the NBA level.

Player grades: Jalen McDaniels, bench leads Sixers past Hawks in OT

Jalen McDaniels has a nice night as the Philadelphia 76ers were able to knock off the Atlanta Hawks on the road.

The Philadelphia 76ers found themselves locked in another meaningless contest on Friday as they paid a visit to the Atlanta Hawks on the road. The Sixers decided to smartly sit Joel Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris, PJ Tucker, and De’Anthony Melton in order to get them ready for the playoffs while the Hawks are fighting for play-in tournament positioning.

The result was the Sixers played Jaden Springer and Mac McClung fresh off a G League title with the Delaware Blue Coats on Thursday, but Philadelphia showed off a lot of fight rallying from 15 points down and they were able to knock off the Hawks 136-131 in overtime in an impressive effort. Jalen McDaniels had 24 points and 11 rebounds in a solid night and Georges Niang had 24 points while knocking down five triples.

Springer had a career-high 19 points, Danuel House Jr. had 22 points, Montrezl Harrell had 11 and 10 rebounds, and Paul Reed had 10 and eight rebounds. Shake Milton added 15 and a career-high 16 assists.
