Boston big man Luke Kornet belts out Whitney Houston during blowout win over the Nets

Kornet kept things light as he sang along to in-arena tunes.

Backup Boston Celtics big man Luke Kornet is definitely among the quirkier players on the Celtics’ roster this season, but in the sort of way that makes you want to have the Vanderbilt alum over for your next house party. To get a better idea of what we mean when we say this, one only has to look to his evening as the player with a mic during the game against the Brooklyn Nets at TD Garden this past Thursday.

The tilt itself was a forgettable event for the Nets and perhaps even the fans in attendance for Boston’s 50-point drubbing of Brooklyn. But Kornet kept things light as he sang along to in-arena tunes, which NBC Sports Boston’s microphone captured for posterity.

Boston Celtics vs. Memphis Grizzlies: Injuries and likely starting lineups

The Boston Celtics could be missing Luke Kornet and Jaylen Brown when they face the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, Feb. 4.

After suffering a humbling defeat to the LeBron James-less Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics will be looking to bounce back with a win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday (Feb. 4.) Marcus Smart has made the trip to Boston but won’t be suiting up, as he continues his recovering from a right finger injury.

The Celtics could be without Luke Kornet, who is listed as probable. He has missed the team’s last three games with a left hamstring strain. Jaylen Brown is also on the injury report, as he is questionable due to low back tightness. Boston will have a full rotation available outside those two.

Nevertheless, the Celtics will need to avoid the trap of expecting to win via talent. They fell into that trap against the Lakers and must show they’ve learned a lesson from the loss. Memphis will be without Smart, Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, and Brandon Clarke. Xavier Tillman is also questionable.

The Celtics currently sit top of the Eastern Conference, four games ahead of the second-placed Milwaukee Bucks. The hope is Joe Mazzulla‘s team can continue stacking wins and creating space between themselves and the chasing pack. The game against the Bucks is the perfect opportunity to continue building momentum heading into the All-Star break.

How the Boston Celtics bench players are making an impact

A case can be made for a minor addition or two via the trade market or perhaps a buyout guy, but a general consensus seems to be building that Boston’s bench needs very little.

The Boston Celtics might not have the most intimidating bench rotation in the NBA when it comes to their offensive output, but then they don’t need to light the world on fire scoring. With arguably the best starting five in the league and a decent supply of offensive firepower already on the bench, the Celtics’ reserves are exactly what this ball club needs to win.

A case can be made for a minor addition or two via the trade market or perhaps a buyout guy, but a general consensus seems to be building that Boston’s bench needs very little if anything.

To take stock of the Stay Ready Crew — as the Celtics’ bench mob has come to be known — NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg broke down how Payton Pritchard, Neemias Queta, Luke Kornet and Sam Hauser are making a difference this season.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. (Apologies for variable audio, wifi issues made for a few bumps).

What will the Celtics do with both Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet injured?

The Celtics’ frontcourt rotation may be dangerously thin for at least a game or two.

Before their back-to-back games against the New Orleans Pelicans and Indiana Pacers next week, the Boston Celtics faced injury setbacks with star big man Kristaps Porzingis and reserve center Luke Kornet.

Kornet was ruled out of the Los Angeles Clippers game mid-contest due to a left hamstring issue, while Porzingis missed the game entirely with a left sprained ankle, an injury he sustained in the matchup against the Miami Heat earlier in the week. Adding to these challenges, the Celtics were decisively defeated by the Clippers, with a final score of 115-96 on Saturday night.

Following the game at TD Garden, CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon discussed the impact of these injuries and the team’s performance in light of their recent defeat.

Luke Kornet goes off in Boston’s win over the Toronto Raptors

The Vanderbilt alum had his best game of the season to date.

The Boston Celtics had a narrow win over the Toronto Raptors at TD Garden on this past Friday night, led by an outstanding performance from reserve center Luke Kornet. The Vanderbilt alum had his best game of the season to date, putting up 20 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks in 33 minutes of floor time, going 9-of-11 from the floor overall, and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

Kornet took advantage of increased playing time with key players out, asserting himself on both ends of the floor. He was actively engaged, scoring around the rim, crashing the boards, blocking shots and facilitating offense. The Celtics center credited teammates for setting him up but showed he’s more than just a screen-setter.

He can impact the game significantly when given the opportunities, which the hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast took a deep dive into on their most recent podcast.

Boston’s Jaylen Brown calls Luke Kornet ‘the ultimate teammate’

“He’s funny, so he uplifts everybody, even in moments where we don’t want to laugh,” said Brown.

If reserve Boston Celtics big man Luke Kornet has not been seeing the floor consistently this season, it’s not because his teammates dislike him. Or at least one of the more prominent ones, anyway, as Kornet’s star forward teammate Jaylen Brown sang his praises after the Vanderbilt product had his best game of the season on Friday.

“Luke is the ultimate teammate,” said Brown of Kornet via MassLive’s Brian Robb after the win over the Toronto Raptors this week. “(He’s) just a great locker room guy, (and) gets along with everybody. He’s funny, so he uplifts everybody, even in moments where we don’t want to laugh.”

“On the court, he’s just old reliable, is always in the right spot, does his job, screens, rolls, plays hard, gets those offensive rebounds, and steps up and in games like today,” noted the Georgia native. “And he had a great game today.”

Team focus helped Celtics’ Luke Kornet stay ready ahead of big Raptors tilt

It can be especially hard to stay mentally prepared and focused on what the team as a whole requires when defining where you fit in that mix is not always clear.

There isn’t a role on the court for an NBA player that doesn’t come with its own unique stresses, but for deep rotation players like Boston Celtics big man Luke Kornet, it can be especially hard to stay mentally prepared and focused on what the team as a whole requires when defining where you fit in that mix is not always clear.

Injuries and competition for the role complicate the situation as much as matchups, injuries, and whether the game is the second half of a back-to-back. But after his best game of the season with the Celtics vs. the Toronto Raptors on Friday night, Kornet shared how keeping what the team needs in mind helped him through that process.

“It definitely does (help),” said the Celtics backup center via The Athletic’s Jay King.

Celtics injury update: Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, Luke Kornet OUT vs. Kings; Kristaps Porzingis available

The Boston Celtics will have to dig deeper than usual into their rotation to bounce back from their road loss to the Golden State Warriors.

The Boston Celtics will have to dig deeper than usual into their rotation to bounce back from their road loss to the Golden State Warriors with a win over the Sacramento Kings Wednesday night, with the team sharing a number of key players will be out for the back-to-back tilt.

Per the team, star forward Jayson Tatum will miss the contest with a sprained ankle he hurt early in the Warriors loss, with veteran big man Al Horford also having the night off due to scheduled rest, and, making Boston’s frontcourt especially thin, backup center Luke Kornet will also miss the contest with a strained adductor.

The most recent injury report released by the Celtics is not all bad news, however.

Starting center Kristaps Porzingis, who has been on and off the injury report in recent weeks for a calf sprain sustained earlier in the season vs. the Orlando Magic.

Celtics’ Luke Kornet unsure about the origin of his ‘Green Kornet’ nickname

“People don’t really call me that, at least not in our organization commonly,” Kornet admitted.

The thing about NBA nicknames is that they are almost always organic in terms of their origin — and pinning down where exactly that origin was from can often be well nigh impossible to pinpoint. And such is the case for Boston Celtics reserve big man Luke Kornet and his popular “Green Kornet” nickname per a recent article on the topic by Boston Dot Com’s Luke Scotchie.

When asked about the origins of his superhero-inspired alter-ego, the player admitted that he’s uncertain. “The Green Kornet, that just sort of happened when I got traded,” explained the Vanderbilt alum on his understanding of his nickname’s origin story. “I honestly don’t even know (where the appellation came from).”

Kornet believes the nickname may have been coined by Celtics analyst and former player Brian Scalabrine and likely draws inspiration from the superhero character “Green Hornet.”

“People don’t really call me that, at least not in our organization commonly,” Kornet admitted.

In the press and on social media, however, Kornet’s nickname is not just visible, but a common sight when the 7-footer is doing good things on the court — and with his play ticking up as the 2023-24 season progresses, the Green Kornet rides again.

At least on the platform formerly known as Twitter, anyway.
