Bad news for the South Carolina football team.

Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer announced Tuesday that quarterback Luke Doty is out for the season and will have surgery on his foot.

Doty, a sophomore, hurt his foot in fall camp and reinjured it during South Carolina’s win over Vanderbilt this past Saturday.

In five games this season, Doty has completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 975 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions.

With Doty done for the season, Beamer said that former graduate assistant coach Zeb Noland will be the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback moving forward.

Noland, 24, had played at Iowa State and North Dakota State before accepting an offer from Beamer to join South Carolina’s coaching staff.

Noland started in the Gamecocks’ first two games, wins over Eastern Illinois and East Carolina, and also played some in the games against Georgia and Vanderbilt. So far this season, he has completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 482 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.

Bad news for the South Carolina Gamecocks’ football team, according to a report.

South Carolina starting quarterback Luke Doty suffered a foot injury in practice on Friday when he was accidentally stepped on and reportedly has a mid-foot fracture and minor ligament damage, per a report from Mike Uva of WACH FOX.

The Gamecocks are slated to scrimmage Saturday afternoon, and head coach Shane Beamer is expected to meet with the media sometime after 5 p.m.

As a true freshman last season, Doty completed 43 of 71 passes (60.6 percent) for 405 yards and two touchdowns against three interceptions, while rushing for 91 yards on 41 carries.

If Doty misses time, Jason Brown, who transferred to South Carolina from St. Francis this spring, could be the choice to take Doty’s place as the Gamecocks’ starting signal-caller. The only other scholarship quarterback on South Carolina’s roster besides Brown and Doty is freshman Colten Gauthier.

SEC QB rankings at regular season’s end: Kyle Trask just means more

The Heisman Trophy may not go to a quarterback after all this year, but there’s no denying how close Trask and Jones have remained.

An unprecedented 2020 college football season has finally reached its end in the SEC, and we’ve seen plenty of surprises and shuffling around at quarterback this year.

One of the biggest storylines of the year has been the competition between Florida’s Kyle Trask and Alabama’s Mac Jones vying for the Heisman Trophy.

But it looks as if the honors might not go to a quarterback at all anymore (enter DeVonta Smith, who is coming off a performance with 15 receptions, 189 yards and two touchdowns).

Here’s a look at where each quarterback in the conference stands at regular season’s end.

1. Kyle Trask, Florida.

Kyle Trask and Mac Jones have remained about as close as they could be all year, and the separating factor is the fact that Trask has been more essential to his team as a whole — while performing at an exceptionally high level — than any other quarterback in the country has.

The Heisman Trophy probably won’t be coming back to Florida after Trask threw two interceptions against LSU (though only one of them was really on him) and the heartbreaking loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship in which Trask took a sack on Florida’s Hail Mary attempt.

He’s completed just under 70% of his passes for 4,125 yards with 43 touchdowns (an FBS best) and five interceptions this season, also breaking Danny Wuerffel’s touchdown record this season.

He clinches the No. 1 spot by a hair with the Cotton Bowl left on schedule.
