LSU vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

So how did LSU do this? How did it bounce back from a horrible performance in the 40-13 home loss to Tennessee to rip off three straight including a blowout over Ole Miss and a win over Alabama?

The running game got working again.

The offensive line has been a problem in pass protection, but it’s grinding away well enough to control the clock and let everything work from there. It’s not just the total yards; it’s about the yards per carry.

LSU is 6-0 when averaging 4.7 yards per carry or more – including against Bama and Ole Miss – and 2-2 when it doesn’t. It couldn’t get anything working on the ground against the Vols, and it showed.

Arkansas doesn’t get gouged all that often, but it’s 1-3 when allowing over four yards per carry.

On the flip side …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Arkansas Will Win

Run, run, run.

LSU did a fantastic job against the excellent Ole Miss ground attack, and it was been able to beat Florida after getting run over and held on against Alabama despite allowing 4.6 yards per carry. However, it’s playing with fire.

The Arkansas running game might have been stopped cold against Liberty last week – a season-low 144 yards – but when the ground game rolls, the team wins.

Again, like LSU, it’s about the yards per carry going 4-1 when running for five yards or more and 5-2 when averaging over four yards per pop. If this is about who’s more effective on the ground, the Hogs have the advantage.

And then there’s this …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much does the game time matter?

It might seem trivial, but sometimes certain teams feed off of routine and energy. LSU is used to playing prime time games and is a totally different animal when it gets to feed off the jacked up Death Valley crowd at night. It played one early game all season long.

The lone noon game was at home against Tennessee in a stunningly low-energy 40-13 loss. Granted, the team on the other side had almost everything to do with that, but the team has been different later in the day and at home.

This is the fourth noon kickoff for the Hogs going 2-1. That won’t be enough to pull off the win over the red-hot Tigers, but it’ll be enough to help make this a strong fight.

LSU vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

The Tigers have just enough dangerous parts to hang around with the Hogs, even if they’re struggling lately.

They’re able to shoot well enough to keep up with the teams with the offensive pop, and the defense has been doing a fantastic job of stopping the three.

No one in the nation comes up with more steals, few teams are better overall defensively, and again, good luck getting a clean look from three.

As long as the Tigers are able to hit close to 45% from the field, they have a chance, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arkansas Will Win

LSU has a really, really, really hard time on the road.

It’s great at home – at least it has been against everyone but Ole Miss and … Arkansas. The Hogs won the first meeting 65-58 back in mid-January.

LSU failed to get to 40% from the field in the loss, but that was an aberration in Baton Rouge. On the road, the team is 1-6 in its last seven games and 2-7 in the last nine.

The offense just stops and the shooting isn’t good enough. Yeah, the Tigers come up with a whole bunch of steals and are great defensively, but Arkansa doesn’t rely on the three and doesn’t turn the ball over all that much.

What’s Going To Happen

It could be argued that Arkansas is playing as well or better than anyone in the SEC over the last several days. It’s on a four-game winning streak and came up with a terrific win over Kentucky.

It’s not going to drop the game at home.

Yes, LSU comes up with whole lot of turnovers, but it also gives the ball away too much. Arkansas forced 17 turnovers in the first meeting and should generate close to that many on this go-round.

Week 12 SEC Power Rankings: LSU falls, Mississippi State rises

LSU drops in the latest SEC Power Rankings.

The SEC has become more and more confusing as the season has gone on.

Auburn choked in the most humiliating way possible, giving up a 28-3 lead to Mississippi State, losing 43-34. 33 Unanswered points from the Bulldogs.

LSU almost defeated No. 25 Arkansas with backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at the helm, but the Tigers couldn’t get it done.

South Carolina had their winning streak snapped by Missouri, and Kentucky had their losing streak broken with a win over Vanderbilt, the team anyone wants to play to get some things going back in the right direction.

Here are the new SEC Power Rankings after week 11.

LSU among biggest losers of the weekend

LSU joins three SEC teams as the “Biggest Losers” of week 11

It wasn’t pretty as most losses are but this one stung a bit more than the others. LSU had the opportunity to get back to the .500 mark but an overtime kick ended it for the Tigers. The team sits at 4-6 overall and last in the SEC West.

A team that was No. 1 in the country just 21 games ago is now in danger of their first losing season since 1999. According to Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports, the LSU Tigers joined Auburn, Florida, and Texas A&M as the biggest losers of the week.

Florida was the only one of the four SEC teams listed that actually won their game but they struggled massively with an FCS opponent in Samford. They gave up 42 first-half points and 52 overall. The other three did fall to SEC competition this week.

What USA TODAY Sports Says…

Arkansas’ 16-13 overtime win in Baton Rouge has LSU staring at its first losing season since 1999. Now 4-6, the Tigers get Louisiana-Monroe at home next Saturday before taking on A&M to avoid a 5-7 finish. The loss to the Razorbacks was this season in miniature: LSU’s offense gained 308 yards, the seventh time this season the Tigers have failed to crack 380 yards in a game. Remember when this program was home to be the most explosive offense in FBS history? Yeah, that was just two seasons ago.

Five LSU takeaways from the OT loss to Arkansas

“The era is almost over”

It was another numbing loss in Baton Rouge on Saturday night. For the first time in six years, the Arkansas Razorbacks took home the Boot trophy. It also marked the first time Ed Orgeron had lost to the Hogs.

Seems like that it is a common occurrence in and every week. This marks the first time LSU lost at home to Auburn or they lost to Arkansas for the first time in six years. It was the first time they lost to Kentucky in over a decade. Too many of these sorts of instances.

With all of that said we broke down our five takeaways from the game.

LSU vs Arkansas: Tigers fall in overtime to the Hogs

Rough ending for the Purple and Gold.

The LSU Tigers tried their two-quarterback system on Saturday night. Well it was more like Max Johnson got two drives and then it was the Garrett Nussmeier show.

There were moments of absolute magic for the freshman, and then there were moments where he looked like a true freshman in his first meaningful moments. He was 18/31 on the night for 179 yards and a touchdown. He also threw two interceptions in the game, the second came in overtime.

The best offensive player on the night was between two guys. Jack Bech had a great touchdown in the first half. He caught four passes for 66 yards. Ty Davis-Price cracked 100 yards again on 28 carries, the Hogs defense made him work for it on the night.

The difference came with turnovers. The Tigers turned over the ball three times while Arkansas had zero. It was an ugly game all the way around for both teams.

KJ Jefferson didn’t have spectacular numbers in the game but he was able to evade defenders and shake off tackles in this game to extend plays. We saw it on the long touchdown throw to Dominique Johnson as he was left all alone. Following the interception of Nussmeier, Cam Little kicked the 37-yard field goal to give them the win.

It was the first win by Arkansas since 2015 and the first time they knock off Ed Orgeron. The Tigers now need wins over UL-Monroe and Texas A&M to reach the postseason.

Halftime stats from LSU vs Arkansas

LSU is in yet another dogfight at the half.

LSU still isn’t folding.

The Tigers really stepped up their game against Alabama last weekend, and this weekend they’ve continued to show defensive intensity as they lead the No. 25 Arkansas Razorbacks 10-3 at halftime.

If LSU continues to hold onto the ball, with the way they’ve shut down the Arkansas passing game the Tigers should be in good hands.

Backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw the only touchdown of the half and will most likely play the second half for LSU.

Here are the stats from the first half.

Team Stats

Total yards: LSU 137, UA 101

Passing yards: LSU 93, UA 34

Rushing yards: LSU 44, UA 67

First downs: LSU 10, UA 6

Third downs: LSU 2-10, UA 1-8

Penalties: LSU 2-15, UA 5-39

Individual Stats

Max Johnson: 3 of 6, 21 yards, 2 carries, 1 yard

Garrett Nussmeier:  6 of 12, 72 yards, 1 touchdown

Tyrion Davis-Price: 12 carries, 29 yards, 1 catch, 1 yard

Corey Kiner: 4 carries, 9 yards

Josh Williams: 3 carries, 7 yards, 1 catch, 0 yards

Armoni Goodwin: 1 carry, -2 yards

Trey Palmer: 2 catches, 22 yards

Jack Bech: 3 catches, 52 yards, 1 touchdown

Jack Mashburn: 1 catch, 18 yards

WATCH: Garrett Nussmeier shows some magic as he finds Jack Bech for a TD

Watch as Nussmeier showed a little razzle-dazzle for the touchdown.

The LSU Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks were geared up for a huge game on Saturday night in Death Valley. The Razorbacks struck first with a field goal to take the early 3-0 lead.

Max Johnson started the game at quarterback but after two drives that ended in punts, it was time to turn to the freshman. Garrett Nussmeier took the field and helped lead them to a field goal. It was mostly done by the running backs in that first drive.

On the second drive, Nussmeier showed off his cannon. On first and 10 to kick off the second quarter, Nuss spun out of pressure and uncorked one down the field to fellow freshman Jack Bech.

After splitting the first four drives, Nussmeier got the nod in drive No. 5.

LSU vs Arkansas: How to watch the Battle for the Boot

How to tune in for the LSU-Arkansas Battle for the Boot.

Saturday night in Death Valley, doesn’t get much better than that for LSU Tigers football. Add in a rivalry trophy and a day of tailgating then we have a real party on the Bayou.

Arkansas comes off a win over Mississippi State, while LSU took No. 2 Alabama to the limit in Tuscaloosa. The Hogs are 6-3 and the Tigers are 4-5, currently, the latter sits last in the SEC West. A win by LSU could swap spots, at least based on their conference records. LSU is 2-4 in conference play compared to Arkansas’ 2-3.

The Bayou Bengals know the importance of this game for their postseason hopes, the Razorbacks stamped their tickets for bowl season last week. However, with the Boot Trophy up for grabs don’t think Arkansas will hold anything back.

It will be interesting to see how long each quarterback plays in this game as both Max Johnson and Garrett Nussmeier got reps as QB1 throughout the week.

These players are key to win.

It will be quite the game on Saturday for the LSU Tigers. We will find out which of the two quarterbacks will take hold of the starting position. It also will give fans an idea if they should make postseason plans.

The Tigers need two wins in the final three weeks to become bowl eligible with Arkansas, UL-Monroe, and Texas A&M on left on the schedule. The benefit is that all three games will take place in Death Valley.

As LSU prepares to take the field at Tiger Stadium on Saturday against the Hogs, we highlight five players that will be key for a win. Their postseason chances become infinitely more. difficult if they can’t knock off Arkansas.
