LSU vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

So how did LSU do this? How did it bounce back from a horrible performance in the 40-13 home loss to Tennessee to rip off three straight including a blowout over Ole Miss and a win over Alabama?

The running game got working again.

The offensive line has been a problem in pass protection, but it’s grinding away well enough to control the clock and let everything work from there. It’s not just the total yards; it’s about the yards per carry.

LSU is 6-0 when averaging 4.7 yards per carry or more – including against Bama and Ole Miss – and 2-2 when it doesn’t. It couldn’t get anything working on the ground against the Vols, and it showed.

Arkansas doesn’t get gouged all that often, but it’s 1-3 when allowing over four yards per carry.

On the flip side …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Arkansas Will Win

Run, run, run.

LSU did a fantastic job against the excellent Ole Miss ground attack, and it was been able to beat Florida after getting run over and held on against Alabama despite allowing 4.6 yards per carry. However, it’s playing with fire.

The Arkansas running game might have been stopped cold against Liberty last week – a season-low 144 yards – but when the ground game rolls, the team wins.

Again, like LSU, it’s about the yards per carry going 4-1 when running for five yards or more and 5-2 when averaging over four yards per pop. If this is about who’s more effective on the ground, the Hogs have the advantage.

And then there’s this …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much does the game time matter?

It might seem trivial, but sometimes certain teams feed off of routine and energy. LSU is used to playing prime time games and is a totally different animal when it gets to feed off the jacked up Death Valley crowd at night. It played one early game all season long.

The lone noon game was at home against Tennessee in a stunningly low-energy 40-13 loss. Granted, the team on the other side had almost everything to do with that, but the team has been different later in the day and at home.

This is the fourth noon kickoff for the Hogs going 2-1. That won’t be enough to pull off the win over the red-hot Tigers, but it’ll be enough to help make this a strong fight.

LSU vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

The Tigers have just enough dangerous parts to hang around with the Hogs, even if they’re struggling lately.

They’re able to shoot well enough to keep up with the teams with the offensive pop, and the defense has been doing a fantastic job of stopping the three.

No one in the nation comes up with more steals, few teams are better overall defensively, and again, good luck getting a clean look from three.

As long as the Tigers are able to hit close to 45% from the field, they have a chance, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arkansas Will Win

LSU has a really, really, really hard time on the road.

It’s great at home – at least it has been against everyone but Ole Miss and … Arkansas. The Hogs won the first meeting 65-58 back in mid-January.

LSU failed to get to 40% from the field in the loss, but that was an aberration in Baton Rouge. On the road, the team is 1-6 in its last seven games and 2-7 in the last nine.

The offense just stops and the shooting isn’t good enough. Yeah, the Tigers come up with a whole bunch of steals and are great defensively, but Arkansa doesn’t rely on the three and doesn’t turn the ball over all that much.

What’s Going To Happen

It could be argued that Arkansas is playing as well or better than anyone in the SEC over the last several days. It’s on a four-game winning streak and came up with a terrific win over Kentucky.

It’s not going to drop the game at home.

Yes, LSU comes up with whole lot of turnovers, but it also gives the ball away too much. Arkansas forced 17 turnovers in the first meeting and should generate close to that many on this go-round.

Why LSU Will Win

LSU showed up late.

It battled hard well in a gut-check 76-73 win over Ole Miss that went down to the final moments. The Tigers were solid at coming up with enough assists to matter, hit 44% from the field, and they kept the turnovers to a minimum.

Now they have to hold up under the Arkansas pressure – they had no problem with that in a mid-January 92-76 win.

They were unstoppable from the field, dominated on the boards, and they were relentless – which is a must against this high-powered team.

LSU has one of the few offenses around that can hang punch for punch, scoring in a variety of way inside and out and on the move. However …

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs came up with a win in the second game 83-75 just a few weeks ago. They ramped up the D a bit, controlled the glass, and it all continued as the offense scored more than 80 points in six of its  last seven games before the SEC Tournament.

They then showed they could grind it out a bit in a 70-64 win over Missouri. They’ll do whatever is needed, but the LSU defense allowed 80 points or more in four games in five before getting by Ole Miss. Arkansas has the scoring punch to keep on firing, and do it better.

What’s Going To Happen

LSU might be able to shoot from anywhere, but Arkansas will get the O going just a little bit more.

Expect a fantastic and fun up-and-down game with a whole lot of mood and momentum swings, but with Arkansas going on a burst down the stretch to finally pull this off.

LSU (14-7) vs Arkansas (18-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

Let’s just call the 91-78 loss to Georgia an aberration.

The offense continues to score in bunches with the ability pump in points inside and out, but the Tigers couldn’t hit from three or from the line against the Dawgs.

Now, the defense isn’t going to be anything great, but as long as it’s able to keep hitting around 47% from the field, it’ll be fine – and that seems to be the deal.

The Tigers had won their last 13 games when making 45% or more of their shots from the field, and are 0-6 on the season when they don’t.

Arkansas has allowed 44% or more from the field in each of its last three games and 43% or more in eight of the last nine.

Why Arkansas Will Win

LSU is going to to get whacked on the boards.

Arkansas comes up with enough defensive pressure to be an issue for an LSU offense that doesn’t move it around all that much, but the real key is its ability to hit the glass hard.

The Tigers might have the scoring firepower, but no one in the SEC wins games in more dominant fashion than the Hogs, including an 81-66 victory over Alabama a few days ago. They lead the league in scoring margin, won their last eight SEC games, and …

What’s Going To Happen

They got whacked by LSU 92-76 back in mid-January. And why?

They were destroyed on the boards, didn’t shoot well, and allowed the Tigers to hit 52% from the field. Expect all of those things to flip this time around.

LSU (2-3) vs Arkansas (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

Arkansas is vastly improved from the disaster of the last few years, but there are still glaring holes that need fixing over the rest of the season, if not next year, too.

The offensive line isn’t keeping anyone out of the backfield. The skill parts have been able to function, but anyone with a halfway decent pass rush is able to live behind the line and slow things down against an attack that stinks on third downs and is last in the SEC in time of possession.

For all of its faults, LSU leads the conference in tackles for loss with a steady enough pass rush to be a problem. The overall defense might be struggling, but the front line is disruptive.

Why Arkansas Will Win

LSU is just freaking weird.

There’s still more than enough talent to be decent, but everyone left the party and what’s left is a whole mess of parts that just aren’t coming together and clicking.

QB Myles Brennan is likely out for the year, but TJ Finley has big-time upside to build around. He needs time to work, he needs a running game to help the cause, and the entire offense needs the defense to stop getting bombed on so there’s not so much pressure.

How many times did Arkansas throw for over 200 yards last year? A bunch, but it was all in September – the O failed to get there over the last seven games. This year’s offense has yet to throw for fewer than 200.

Feleipe Franks been terrific, the defense is taking the ball away as well as any team in the conference, and unlike LSU, the parts are meshing just well enough to be competitive against everyone but the Floridas and Georgias of the world.

2020 LSU isn’t in that world.

What’s Going To Happen

Last year LSU was favored by over 40 points against the Hogs, and now …

The game against Alabama last week didn’t happen, and it didn’t matter.

LSU’s offense will work well enough to make this a fun shootout, but Arkansas is getting back head coach Sam Pittman, it’s been good at home, and it’ll come up with the late rally to pull this off. Franks will be the difference – he won’t make the mistakes that LSU’s backfield will.
