Spring practice reports for every team on LSU’s 2023 schedule

Here’s how things are shaping up for the teams the Tigers are set to face this fall.

Most programs have now wrapped up spring practice.

As we turn our attention to the summer and impatiently wait for fall camp, it’s time to start looking around the country and see how LSU’s opponents are shaping up this fall.

LSU, as usual, has a tough schedule.

This one is even tougher than most. It opens with a likely top 10 opponent in Florida State. If that wasn’t hard enough, that game will be in Orlando.

LSU doesn’t get Alabama at home this year, either, with the Tigers having to travel to Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Just two of LSU’s first six games are at home. However, that sets up a back half where LSU gets home field against Auburn, Texas A&M and Florida.

Thrown in the middle of it, LSU will have to prepare for triple-option Army.

LSU to open 2024 season on Sunday night against USC in Las Vegas

LSU will kickoff 2024 on Sunday night yet again, this time in Sin City.

LSU has long bragged about Tigers playing on Sunday.

Usually, that has to do with the volume of former NFL players that found a home in the NFL. Now, it’s taking on a new meaning with the news LSU’s 2024 opener against USC will be the Sunday night game.

It will mark three straight Sunday night kickoff games for LSU. Last year, LSU faced Florida State in New Orleans on Sunday night and will do the same in Orlando this year. The USC game will take place in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium.

Both USC and LSU have high hopes this season. With both programs trending up, there’s a good chance the game has some playoff implications in 2024.

That will also be USC’s debut game as a Big Ten school with the Trojans set to move conferences following the upcoming season.

Assuming [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and Lincoln Riley still lead both schools, it will pit the two most significant coaching changes of that hectic 2021-22 cycle against each other.

LSU to open 2027 football season against Houston at NRG Stadium

The Tigers hold a 2-1 record all-time against the Cougars with the last contest coming in 2000.

LSU will open its 2027 slate with a contest against a Big 12 team.

The Tigers will travel to NRG Stadium in Houston for what will be a nominal neutral site game against the Houston Cougars in the Texas Kickoff. The Cougs are set to move to the Power Five from the American starting in 2023.

This will be LSU’s third time participating in the Texas Kickoff, with the previous games coming against Wisconsin in 2014 and BYU in 2016. The latter game was moved to New Orleans due to flooding in Houston the week of the game.

The Tigers most recently played at NRG Stadium in the Texas Bowl after the 2021 season, which it lost to Kansas State.

“The city of Houston and the entire area of southeast Texas continues to be vital to the success of LSU, not only our football program, but the entire university,” coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said in a release. “With more LSU alumni in that region than any other location outside of the state of Louisiana, it’s important that we have a strong presence in this area and this season-opening matchup will certainly enhance and strengthen the LSU brand in the state of Texas.”

LSU has certainly made recruiting the state of Texas a priority, as five of its 25 signees in 2023 hail from the Lone Star State. The state also has quite a few Tigers fans in residence, as athletics director [autotag]Scott Woodward[/autotag] said in the release.

“It’s always exciting when our football program gets the opportunity to compete in Texas, where so many LSU fans and alumni reside,” he said. “We know our supporters will be just as excited to cheer on the Tigers to kick off the 2027 season, and we look forward to a memorable contest.”

This will be the third contest against Houston in program history. The last came in 2000 when LSU won 28-13 at home. The Tigers hold the all-time series lead at 2-1.

LSU’s 2023 college football schedule

Here’s the Tigers’ full slate of contests as they’ll look to improve upon the result from Brian Kelly’s first season.

The 2022 college football season wrapped up Monday night with Georgia’s brutal win over TCU, and that officially put a bow on Brian Kelly’s first campaign in Baton Rouge.

It was a successful one with the team winning 10 games and the West division by virtue of an upset win over Alabama at Death Valley. But heading into 2023 with a lot of returning players, especially on offense, the expectation will be to take things to the next level and compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

If that’s going to happen, LSU can’t afford nearly as many slip ups. That will start with trying to avenge last year’s loss to Florida State in the opener next year.

Here’s LSU’s full schedule for the 2023 season.

LSU announces full 2023 football schedule

Here’s the Tigers’ full slate of games next fall.

On Tuesday night, the SEC announced its full slate of conference games and dates for the 2023 season. With non-conference matchups already contractually set, we now know the Tigers’ full schedule next season.

It will begin with a rematch against Florida State, this time in Orlando. Other non-conference opponents will be Grambling, Army and Georgia State. It will be the first time LSU has faced Grambling or GSU, and only the second time it has faced Army (and the first since 1931).

As far as conference matchups go, in addition to facing the SEC West and Florida, LSU will also face Missouri out of the East. There are some quirks in scheduling as the Tigers will face Arkansas in September for the first time as well as hosting the Gators in November.

Here’s LSU’s full schedule for the 2023 season.

An advanced stats look at Jayden Daniels

Here’s an advanced stats look at Jayden Daniels in 2021

We still don’t know much about who will start at quarterback for LSU when the season begins in less than a month.

We do know that it is a three-horse race between Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier, and [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag].

Of those three, Daniels has the most experience. Brennan has made a few starts and Nussmeier has seen some action, but neither has given us a huge sample size.

Daniels started three years at Arizona State, which means we have a wealth of information.

The situation Daniels is in now is different than the one at Arizona State. He has better wide receivers and the coaching staff isn’t in complete turmoil.

That doesn’t mean we can’t learn anything about who Daniels was as a Sun Devil. Let’s jump right in and see what the advanced stats tell us about his last three years.

Looking at LSU’s future non-conference opponents in football

Some of these games are years away, but the Tigers have some exciting non-conference matchups on the slate in the future.

Non-conference contests provide us with some of the more interesting games in college football.

It’s always fun to see teams that rarely see each other get a chance to face-off. Since these games take place early in the year, they don’t always have the weight of a later season contest, but they still give teams a chance to make a statement on a national stage, while also being a chance for new fanbases to come together.

LSU has a big non-conference game to open 2022 as the Tigers are slated to face Florida State in New Orleans. They also face the Seminoles to open the season in 2023 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

We’ll be looking even further ahead, where the team has some neutral site games but also a few intriguing home-and-home series.

With the SEC set to undergo massive change when Texas and Oklahoma join, schedules are always subject to change. LSU has the Sooners on the schedule in 2027 and 2028. By then, OU will have taken its place in the SEC, so the status of those games remains unknown.

They could still be played, they just likely wouldn’t be official SEC games. It’s been done before with North Carolina and Wake Forrest playing what was technically an out-of-conference game that didn’t count against the conference record.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what LSU has on tap in the coming years.

2022 College Football Schedules: All 131 Teams

What are the chances LSU finishes at least 6-6?

What is the probability of LSU getting to six wins in 2021?

With the remaining five games for LSU being a gauntlet of SEC teams playing much better than the Tigers are right now, let’s take a look at what the chances are of LSU finishing 6-6, four wins, or winning out the rest of the season using ESPN’s SP+ projections (subscription required).

Bill Connelly of ESPN and his SP+ projection statistic is a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. The projection-based stat is intended to be “predictive and forward-facing,” as opposed to a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling.

It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. As Connelly describes it, if a team is lucky or unimpressive in a win, that team’s rating will probably fall. If they’re strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.

After LSU’s loss to Auburn, the Tigers’ chances of finishing 6-6 is now 36%, according to the SP+ projections. The chances of LSU finishing with only 4 wins is 8% and the chances of them finishing with 9 wins are 1%.

LSU travels to No. 16 Kentucky next week and has road games against Ole Miss and Alabama remaining on the schedule. They also play Florida and Texas A&M at home. Head coach Ed Orgeron and the entire staff have their work cut out from them from here on out, and understandably, a lot is at stake.
