Top 101 LSU football players of all time: What current players could make the list?

Before we finish the countdown, what current LSU players could be joining the list in the future.

In the summer, I began counting down the top 101 players in the history of LSU Football.

We now have just 10 players to go

But before the final 10 is revealed, it’s worth taking a look at who could join the list in the future. It can be a fool’s game to predict who is going to be an all-time great and who isn’t.

There’s only 101 spots on that list. Just by math alone, when looking at if a player will join the list or not, the smart bet is always no. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun with it.

There’s plenty of talent on LSU’s roster and the expectations will be high entering 2023. All it takes is one great year paired with team success to become a program great. Here are some current players who have a chance to become some of the best to ever do it at LSU.

Top 101 LSU football players of all time: No. 30-21

The countdown continues with standouts in the trenches and a couple of hard-hitting linebackers.

Earlier this year, I began a countdown of the top 101 players in LSU football’s history.

The countdown resumes today, as we enter the top 30 and really start looking at the best of the best. Before we get started, a reminder of the notes and criteria used when putting this list together.

  • I’ve tried my best to avoid recency bias.
  • Emphasis was placed on players who received all-American honors and other accolades. Leaders of championship teams received a boost as well.
  • I gave coach and eyewitness quotes about players significant emphasis.
  • Players who made significant contributions over multiple years were given priority over single-season stars. Production mattered more than talent.

Running down LSU’s history at the Citrus Bowl ahead of matchup vs. Purdue

This will be the sixth time LSU has played in the Citrus Bowl, tying for the most of any program.

The Tigers aren’t quite where they wanted to be in the postseason after back-to-back losses to end the regular season cost them a shot at the College Football Playoff or New Year’s Six.

Still, at 9-4 in Year 1 under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], LSU can’t complain too much about its season or its bowl destination. The team draws Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, one of the most prestigious non-NY6 games.

Played under a number of different names over the years, the Citrus Bowl has existed in some capacity since 1947. This year’s appearance will be LSU’s sixth in the game, tying for the most of any program. It’s the Tigers’ first Citrus Bowl appearance since 2018, and they’re 2-3 all-time in this game.

Here’s how prior contests in this game have gone for LSU.

Top 101 LSU football players of all time: No. 40-31

The countdown resumes, kicking off with Jamal Adams.

Over the summer, I began a countdown of the top 101 players in the history of LSU football. The season began and it got lost in the shuffle, but now that LSU’s on a bye, there’s some time to pick it back up.

Today, we’re looking at No. 40-31 on the list. It features a couple of hard-hitting safeties, a few offensive linemen, as well as some of the best receivers LSU’s had to offer.

With that in mind, let’s continue the list. But first, just some reminders on the criteria used to construct the all-time list.

  • I’ve tried my best to avoid recency bias
  • Emphasis was placed on players who received accolades such as All-American
  •  Players who made contributions over multiple seasons were given slight edges over players who had one elite year

How has LSU fared in its season-openers over the last decade?

Here’s how the last 10 openers have gone for the Tigers.

After a long offseason, we’ve finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel.

The 2022 college football season is already underway, and LSU is set to begin its campaign on Sunday against the Florida State Seminoles in New Orleans. The [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] era is set to begin in prime time at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

The Tigers aren’t just looking to start the 2022 season on the right foot, though. They’re also looking to reverse the recent trend of early season misfortune and capture their first win in a season-opener since 2019.

With that in mind, here’s how LSU has fared in its first game in each of the last 10 seasons.

Top 101 LSU football players of all time: No. 50-41

The countdown continues as we hit the home stretch.

LSU football has been around for a long time. Since 1893, to be exact.

In that span, plenty of great football players have come through the program. Before we begin the journey of the 2022 season, I thought I’d take a stab at ranking the 101 best players in LSU history.

I have tried to avoid recency bias as much as possible. It can be hard to get enough information about older players, but I did my best to get them about in the ballpark of where they should be.

Anytime there’s a list this big, people will disagree. There’s so little that separates the 50th player from the 70th, and so on.

I tried to balance consistency over multiple seasons with some players that had one great year. Both have been rewarded here. With that in mind, let’s continue the countdown.

LSU football all-time roster: Coaches, kickers and specialists

See which coaching and special teams legends made the cut in our all-time LSU football roster.

Special teams can be a bit of an afterthought at times, but that shouldn’t be the case. After all, special teams can be an equalizer for less talented teams and a thorn in the side of otherwise elite ones.

We’ve seen countless examples of special teams making — or breaking (see: kick-six) — teams’ title hopes over the years. When looking at LSU’s history, there’s no shortage of impact special teams contributors.

We’ll take a look at the best in this breakdown, as well as the top coaches who have come through the Tigers’ program over the years.

LSU football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time LSU football roster.

When people think about the LSU football program, the historic 2019 team likely comes to mind. That national championship-winning squad was strong all-around, but it was especially notable for the offense and the litany of talent it produced.

But for most of this team’s history, that has not been the case. The Tigers earned a reputation over many years for their physical style of football and the number of future NFL stars they produced on defense.

We continue our look at LSU’s all-time roster, and now we’ll break down the defensive starters and backups.

LSU football all-time roster: Offensive starters and backups

See which legends made the cut in our all-time LSU football roster, starting with the offensive starters and backups.

Though perhaps best known for the defensive superstars it has produced, LSU has seen no shortage of offensive talent come through Baton Rouge.

This has been even more true in recent years, as the 2019 team alone featured some of the best offensive players the Tigers have ever had. But if you look at the totality of this program’s history, where do the top offensive players land?

We’ve tried our hand at putting together LSU’s all-time two deep, beginning with the offensive side of the ball. Who made the cut for the Tigers?

Big-name coaches that have been on LSU’s staff over the years

LSU’s had some big time assistants come through the program over the years. Here’s a look at the top names.

A lot of big names in the coaching ranks have come through LSU over the years.

Several LSU assistants have gone on to have big-time head coaching jobs in the SEC or elsewhere. Some have even won national championships.

LSU’s had a lot of success in the 21st century and these all-star coaching staffs have had a lot to do with it. The fact that they have been so good is what has allowed so many names to cycle in and out as assistants move on to bigger and better things.

Today, we’re going to look at all the recognizable names that have been a part of the LSU staff since 2000, the year [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] arrived.
