Notre Dame hosting Virginia Tech wide receiver transfer this weekend

He would be a great addition!

The Irish have a few needs that they are going to try and fill via the transfer portal. One of the biggest is quarterback, but there has not been much news from any of the multiple targets Notre Dame is going after. They have already found a kicker, [autotag]Spencer Shrader[/autotag], and are hosting former [autotag]Virginia Tech[/autotag] wide receiver [autotag]Kaleb Smith[/autotag] this weekend.

Smith, a grad transfer, played his best football during his final year for the Hokies, catching 37 passes for 674 yards and three touchdowns. All of those numbers were career highs for the six-foot-two-inch and 222-pound receiver. By getting Smith to South Bend, it’s a big first step in gaining a commitment from the transfer.

The wide receiver unit struggled mightily this fall and with tight end [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] leaving, the need to add more talent really is paramount. [autotag]Lorenzo Styles Jr.[/autotag] suffered through a sophomore slump after it looked like he was primed for a breakout after a huge [autotag]PlayStation Fiesta Bowl[/autotag] last year.

[autotag]Jayden Thomas[/autotag] showed flashed, but wasn’t consistent. Same goes for [autotag]Deion Colzie[/autotag] and [autotag]Tobias Merriweather[/autotag]. If the Irish are able to get a commitment from Smith, it would be a very big transfer portal recruiting win.

Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s Deion Colzie’s first college touchdown

A look towards the future?

Notre Dame might not beat USC, but you can’t say it just dropped and died when the going got tough. Fresh off a botched exchange that led to a Trojans touchdown, the Irish’s offense got right back to work.

A 24-yard run by [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] set the Irish up in Trojans territory, and that was followed by [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag]’s 24-yard completion to [autotag]Lorenzo Styles Jr.[/autotag] Two plays later, Pyne found [autotag]Deion Colzie[/autotag] in the end zone and threw to him from 23 yards out, resulting in a catch and the Trojans’ lead being cut to 24-14:

Not only was this Colzie’s first touchdown of the season, but it was his first in an Irish uniform. He will be one of the players worth watching next season as he should make some more strides as a junior. Until then, it’s nice to watch what could be a preview of things to come. People on Twitter seemed to agree:

The culmination of the spring football season is upon us, the Blue and Gold game is set to be on our screens and for some of us, in the stands of Notre Dame Stadium. For the most part all the work these players have put in has been behind the scenes, but now, they emerge from the shadows of Irish Athletic Complex and give us a sneak peak of what’s to come this fall. Here are five outcomes we’d love to see come out of the spring.

Notre Dame WR Thomas prepping like he’s going to contribute in ‘22

He could be the one to step up

The Irish are going to need playmakers to step up this fall and it looks like second-year wide receiver Jayden Thomas is getting ready to do so. The Georgia native didn’t see the field often in his first season, two other freshman receivers, Lorenzo Styles Jr. and Deion Colzie did.

Last years leading receiver Kevin Austin is gone, with returning veterans Braden Lenzy and Avery Davis leading the way. His two classmates will contribute as well, we can’t forget about tight end Michael Mayer either, but there will be room for others to step up.

Thomas seemingly wants to be that guy and the potential is there for him to do so. The former two-sport star, baseball, is putting his full focus on football. It looks like it’s paying off.

What to expect from Notre Dame WR Styles Jr. in year two

This hype video is a sign of things to come

It was a smashing success during year one in the Blue and Gold for freshman wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. Coming in as a two-way player, I though he would make his mark first on the defensive side and that was way wrong.

Although Styles Jr. had the typical up-and-down first year, Notre Dame fans should be extremely excited about his future. He caught just 24 balls, but amassed 344-yards, good for a 14.3 yards-per-reception, and found the end zone once.

That one time was during the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, where Styles Jr. went off, recording season highs in receptions, eight, yards, 136, and his lone score. It was a tease of what is to come, giving us an idea of his massive potential.

At minimum, Styles Jr. should double his yardage from his freshman year, and his trips to the end zone should increase exponentially. Expect around 6 scores for the rising sophomore and that might be selling him short. This is obviously just a guess, but 60 receptions for 800-yards and 6 touchdowns would be a great line for the Ohio native.

The five plays that loomed large in Notre Dame’s loss over OSU

These plays made the difference

The Marcus Freeman era started off with a bang. The Irish came out of the gates strong and just kept the pressure on Oklahoma State and did everything they needed to win the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. It was fun to see and as always there were plays that weren’t scoring play that changed the game, here are those five plays.

Watch: Coan finds Styles Jr. as Notre Dame strikes first vs OSU

What a start

The Irish have started the game exactly how they wanted to, getting the ball and marching down the field to put up point. Of the five plays, none of them were run plays, as offensive coordinator Tommy Rees wanted to test the Oklahoma State defense’s secondary. They failed.

Coan completed passes to running back Chris Tyree, wide receiver Kevin Austin, then Tyree again before the scoring strike. Coan found a streaking Lorenzo Styles Jr. over the middle of the field for a 29-yard touchdown score, as the Irish took an early 7-0 lead in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. A very nice start for new head coach Marcus Freeman.

One Notre Dame player makes 247Sports true freshman All-American team

Nobody expected this

If you asked many of us who would make the biggest impact from the incoming freshman class the likely answers would have been wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr., offensive tackle Blake Fisher or linebacker Prince Kollie.

That was not the case at the end of the year, as Styles Jr. got plenty of time flashing his potential, Fisher’s season was cut short by an injury and Kollie never really was able to crack the lineup. It was Minnesota freshman offensive tackle Joe Alt that ultimately stepped up into Fisher’s spot and once the converted tight end got rolling, it was hard for him to be stopped.

Alt was named today as a true-freshman All-American by 247Sports, an honor that we all did not expect to see this year. It’s a fantastic story, Alt’s transition from tight end to offensive tackle went as smooth as one could have expected. It’s safe to say that the Irish are in good hands at offensive tackle when Fisher returns from his injury and with Alt having extremely valuable experience during his freshman season.
