Four-star RB Cedric Baxter Jr drops top seven schools, Texas makes the cut

Texas is in the mix for elite running back Cedric Baxter Jr.

Cedric Baxter Jr, one of the top running backs in the class of 2023, released his top seven schools on Saturday.

Texas made the cut with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and others. Baxter is rated by 247sports composite as the No. 4 running back in the country who has received 38 offers.

Andrew Ivins of 247sports compares Baxter to Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr in his scouting report:

A potential workhorse or feature back. The first one off the bus with his 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame. Could eventually push 230 pounds or more once in a college strength program. Played primarily safety and a little wide receiver before settling in as the starting running back at one of Orlando’s top high school programs. Produced right away as a junior averaging just over 8.5 yards per carry while facing stiff competition week in and week out.

Landing Baxter would be the first big win for new running backs coach Tashard Choice at Texas.

LOOK: Texas targets and signees at UA All-America Game practice

Multiple members of Texas’ 2022 signing class have been invited to play in the 2022 Under Armour All-American Game in Orlando.

Multiple members of Texas’ 2022 recruiting class have been invited to play in the 2022 Under Armour All-American Game in Orlando.

Texas has six signees who accepted the invite and take part in the game this year.

  • OL Kelvin Banks
  • WR Brenen Thompson (injured)
  • S BJ Allen
  • DL Jaray Bledsoe
  • DL Justice Finkley
  • OL Neto Umeozulu

A description of the event is stated on the Under Armour website:

The next generation of gridiron superstars shows out every year at the All-America Football Game. More than 100 of the nation’s best players are selected by Under Armour to spend a week in Orlando, FL training and competing at the highest level.

The game will kick off this Saturday at 2 p.m. EST on ESPN 2 from Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

On3 Sports national recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton gave us a look at a few Texas signees and targets during practice No. 1 at the UA All-American Game:

Texas Football: Wish list of prospects for the 2023 recruiting class

Six players that Texas needs to get into the fold in the 2023 cycle.

Although the 2022 class is not quite over with, it is never too early to look ahead.

Texas currently has a top five class in the country for the 2022 cycle which is remarkable given the disappointing season the Horns had. But if Steve Sarkisian is going to get the program “back” to national championship-contending level, he must stack multiple elite classes on top of each other.

The Longhorns have already gained interest from some of the biggest names in the class of 2023 such as Arch Manning, Rueben Owens and Javien Toviano.

If Texas wants to sign another top level class at this time next year the product has to improve on the field. A 5-7 record is much more forgivable in season one compared to season two. Recruits will want to see Steve Sarkisian’s vision is working and the best way to do that is winning more games.

It will not take a Big 12 championship and a college football playoff birth to prove the program is going in the right direction. If Texas wins just eight or nine games in 2022 recruiting momentum will create itself.

If Sarkisian could put together a Christmas wish list for 2023 prospects, here are some of the players that would definitely make the cut:

LOOK: Four-star DE Omari Abor sports Texas gloves for his state title game

Duncanville star spotted in Texas gear at the state championship game.

Texas target Omari Abor was spotted in Texas gloves flashing the “hook’em horns” ahead of Duncanville’s state championship game.

Abor is uncommitted and plans to sign during the February signing period. The Duncanville product has interest in Texas, Ohio State, LSU, Texas A&M and Alabama.

247Sports has Abor ranked as the No. 4 defensive end prospect in the nation and No. 9 overall player in the state of Texas. 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks compared Abor to Denver Broncos star pass rusher, Bradley Chubb.

With only one official visit left, it will be important for Steve Sarkisian and Bo Davis to get Abor on campus before signing day.

Texas has already signed a very solid defensive line class, adding Abor to the mix with J’Modd Tapp, Justice Finkley among other signees would make up one of the best classes in the country.

Former Texas commit Armani Winfield signs with Baylor

Baylor wins the in-state battle for four-star WR Armani Winfield.

Four-star wide receiver Armani Winfield made headlines after decommitting from the Horns in the middle of the season finale against Kansas State.

Schools like Michigan State and Baylor have since made a strong push for the Lewisville wideout over the past few weeks. Texas got back into the hunt after landing Winfield’s buddy and former five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers from the portal.

Despite making up some ground late, Winfield decided to take his talents to Baylor over Texas and Michigan State.

Winfield is ranked as the No. 25 wide receiver in the country and No. 32 overall prospect in the state of Texas for the 2022 cycle, according to 247Sports composite.

The 6-foot-2 wide receiver tallied over 2,700 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns in his high school career.

Texas currently has the No. 5 ranked 2022 recruiting class but only has one wide receiver commit in Brenen Thompson. Steve Sarkisian is looking to add more talent to the wide receiver room behind freshman All-American Xavier Worthy.

Texas lands three-star ATH Savion Red over SMU

One of the more underrated recruits in the state.

The recruiting momentum continues as Texas lands commitment No. 4 on the day with do-it-all athlete Savion Red.

Texas is hoping that they found a diamond in the rough in the Grand Prairie product. 247Sports has Red rated as a three-star recruit and the No. 205 prospect in the state of Texas.

It remains to be seen what position Red will play at the next level. During his high school career, Red showed the ability to play quarterback, running back, wide receiver and even some linebacker.

Between Red’s 5-foot-10, 210-pound frame and Texas wanting to take a second running back this class, starting Red as a running back/slot wide receiver would be a good fit.

In magical senior season at Grand Prairie, Red lead the Gophers to their first playoff win and appearance in over 32 years. He totaled over 2,200 yards and 28 touchdowns while playing both quarterback and wide receiver.

Check out this clip of Red laying the boom on a defender:

Texas moves up to No. 6 in 247Sports 2022 recruiting class rankings

Texas is rising up the 2022 recruiting class rankings ahead of the early signing period.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are killing it on the recruiting trail this offseason.

Despite the 5-7 season, the Horns have built one of the stronger recruiting classes in the nation. Texas now has the No. 6 class in the country for the 2022 cycle with the most recent commitment from four-star offensive lineman Neto Umeozulu.

Current 247Sports composite team rankings for the 2022 class:

  1. Georgia
  2. Alabama
  3. Texas A&M
  4. Ohio State
  5. Penn State
  6. Texas
  7. Notre Dame
  8. North Carolina
  9. Michigan
  10. Oklahoma

The Longhorns jumped rival Oklahoma for the top class in the Big 12 following the departure of head coach Lincoln Riley.

Texas has put an emphasis on adding more depth and talent in the trenches in this class after a disappointing 2021 campaign. They’re certainly doing so, as 12 of the 23 committed prospects are offensive or defensive linemen.

With multiple high-profile targets still on the board and all sorts of momentum, Texas has a chance to finish with a top five class for the 2022 cycle.

Between the talent of this 2022 class and landing former No. 1 quarterback prospect Quinn Ewers, the future looks bright in Austin.

Twitter reacts to Neto Umeozulu’s late-night commitment to Texas

The momentum continues to build for Texas’ 2022 class.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian sent out a cryptic tweet at about 10 p.m. Monday night that hinted at a possible commitment.

This sent Texas fans into a frenzy as they spent another night spamming the refresh button on Twitter with hopes of good news.

The fans who stayed up late were treated to a very pleasant surprise after four-star offensive lineman Neto Umeozulu committed to the Longhorns.

Kyle Flood has been on fire on the recruiting trail. Texas has five offensive linemen committed to its 2022 class with priority targets Devon Campbell and Malik Agbo still on the board.

Umeozulu marked the third offensive lineman Texas has landed since the “Pancake Factory” NIL deal was announced last week. Texas’ NIL benefits have provided a massive boost on the recruiting trail.

Sarkisian and his staff have all sorts of momentum ahead of the early signing period beginning on Wednesday.

Umeozulu’s surprise commitment provided a lot of social media hype among Texas recruits. View some of the best reactions here:

Three-star OL Cam Williams commits to Texas

BOOM! The flood gates are opening for the Texas offensive line recruiting.

The University of Miami did Texas a huge favor by hiring Mario Cristobal away from Oregon.

Cristobal’s departure gave Texas another chance at a couple of offensive linemen that they had previously committed to the Ducks.

Texas and Kyle Flood have capitalized on their second chance after closing on five-star offensive lineman Kelvin Banks on Saturday, and now landing another former Oregon commit, Cam Williams.

Williams is a three-star prospect ranked as the No. 39 offensive tackle in the nation by 247Sports. The 6-foot-7, 360-pound Duncanville product committed to the Horns over Oregon, Miami and Oklahoma.

Closing this class strong is vital as Texas needs help on the line of scrimmage in a major way. High-priority targets Devon Campbell, Malik Agbo and Kam Dewberry are still on the board.

Texas has the No. 6 recruiting class in the nation with a little less than a week away from early signing day.
