Texas is set to take on Xavier in the Sweet 16 on Friday night in Kansas City. The Longhorns open up as an early four-point favorite in this matchup against the Musketeers.

Texas’ path to the Sweet 16 included a 20-point first-round victory over Colgate and a tight contest vs. Penn State. Xavier mounted a massive second half comeback against Kennesaw State in the Round of 64 before handling Pitt next.

Xavier presents some similar challenges as Colgate and Penn State. The Musketeers are an excellent offensive unit led by one of the nation’s best three-point shooting attacks.

Texas’ perimeter defense must continue to force difficult shots on the outside. Tyrese Hunter and Timmy Allen are two players Rodney Terry will trust to slow down Xavier’s shooting.

Dylan Disu is going to play a vital role for Texas again after a career game against Penn State. Xavier is going to be without stud forward Zach Freemantle in the frontcourt due to injury.

Another strong performance from Disu, along with a bounce-back game from the guards, would make Texas tough for anyone to beat.

Texas and Xavier will square off at 8:45 p.m. CT at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Friday night.

Wow, Jaxson Hayes. He really just doesn’t quit. Since his time at Texas up to now, his rookie season in the NBA, Hayes won’t stop putting opponents on posters. His latest victim is Cheik Diallo during the New Orleans Pelicans’ close loss to the Phoenix Suns. Hayes brought his head above the rim and soared to the basket, throwing it down with ferocity – Diallo just happened to be in his way.

On Tuesday night, the Texas Longhorns basketball team improved its’ record to 7-1 with a 10-point win over the UAB Blazers. Texas shot the ball well, rebounding from a disappointing shooting performance against McNeese State over the weekend. Texas barely escaped that game with a 73-71 win and shot only 29% from three and 50% from the free-throw line.

Against the UAB Blazers, the Longhorns corrected that as they went 44% from three and 72.7% from the line. Andrew Jones was the star for Texas, going for 20 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 27 minutes. He set his career-high as he hit 6 three-pointers and provided a surge to the Longhorns’ offense.

Up next for Texas is Texas A&M on Sunday. The Aggies are 3-4 coming off a loss against the 2-6 Fairfield Stags. On that topic, if it seems the Longhorns’ schedule is a little softer this year, it’s because it is. Texas currently has two ranked teams on the schedule – No. 2 Kansas and No. 18 Baylor. The out of conference schedule is riddled with teams that don’t project to make the tournament like McNeese State, Central Michigan, and Prairie View.

For Texas to secure a top-6 seed in the tournament, they need to minimize losses to teams like that and come out with at least one upset over Baylor or Kansas.

The Texas Longhorns basketball team improves to 6-1 with a narrow victory over the 2-6 McNeese State Cowboys

Today, the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team narrowly beat the now 2-6 McNeese State Cowboys, outlasting the visiting team 73-71. Though escaping the 2-5 Cowboys by only two points won’t exactly instill confidence in Longhorn diehards, a win is a win and having a proficiency for coming out on top of ugly games is a trait that can be useful come March.

Overall, the Longhorns had a tough time getting anything going from behind the arc, hitting on just 9 of their 31 three point attempts. From the field, Texas hit only 30 if its 66 attempts, good for an uninspiring 45.5% shooting percentage as a team.

Furthermore, Texas was unable to effectively get to the free throw line, attempting only 8 total free throws of which they hit 4 for a miserable 50% free throw percentage.

The player of the game for the Longhorns was Matt Coleman, who accrued 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists in 38 minutes of play. This Longhorns team has a foundation to build on, but needs to get more consistent on the offensive end if they wish to make any noise this season.

The newest top 25 for college basketball was released. Where did the Texas Longhorns fall?

Today, the newest iteration of the AP Top 25 poll came out for men’s basketball, and Texas did not make the cut. The voters obviously didn’t care for Texas’ tough loss to unranked Georgetown, and a win over Cal to secure third place in the 2k Empire Classic wasn’t enough to keep the Longhorns in.
