Packers fill open roster spot by signing long snapper Jack Coco

The Packers are signing Jack Coco to add competition at long snapper on the 90-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers are adding competition at long snapper by signing rookie undrafted free agent Jack Coco, who was in Green Bay for rookie minicamp as a tryout player and will now take the roster spot vacated by waiving Jahmir Johnson. Lewis Caralla, Coco’s strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Tech, announced the signing on Twitter on Tuesday night with a photo of Coco signing a contract in Green Bay. Coco confirmed the signing via his official Instagram account.

Coco wore No. 59 as a tryout player during the Packers rookie minicamp on May 6-7. Now signed, he’ll get a chance to compete with Steve Wirtel for the long snapper job in Green Bay for the 2022 season.

Coco, who doubled as a reserve tight end while at Georgia Tech, played in 39 games over his final four seasons. Georgia Tech’s school website recorded Coco without an “errant snap” on punts or field goals.

Coco snapped in high school and arrived at Georgia Tech as an offensive line recruit. He eventually lost over 30 pounds and transitioned to tight end while still handling responsibilities as the team’s primary long snapper. He earned a full scholarship before the 2021 season.

Coco is a Georgia native. He is listed at 6-2 and 232 pounds on the school’s website, but he measured 6-2 and 248 pounds at Georgia Tech’s pro day.

In Green Bay, Coco will join former Yellow Jackets teammate Tariq Carpenter, the Packers’ seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft.

Broncos’ projected special teams depth chart before the NFL draft

Brandon McManus is safe, but could the Broncos have some shakeups at other special teams positions?

We’ve already given our projected offensive and defensive depth chart predictions for the Denver Broncos ahead of the NFL draft, and special teams is all that remains now.

Given that there are just three positions dedicated solely to special teams, this projection is short. Let’s get to it!

Blake Ferguson is carrying on an impressive long snapping legacy in Miami Gardens

He recently won a Twitter bracket for the best long snapper in the NFL.

Continuity is key in football, like any profession. Having consistency day-in and day-out is invaluable to an organization. It’s common, in these situations, that the most consistent factors on a team are the most hidden and, at times, anonymous.

The Miami Dolphins have had just three long snappers in the last 17 seasons. It’s been a remarkable run at a position that was historically made up of players who played other positions and picked up the skill and has now transitioned into an art.

In 2005, the Dolphins signed an undrafted free agent defensive end from BYU named John Denney. In a stellar 14-year career, Denney made a pair of Pro Bowls despite not recording a single sack because Denney was the Cal Ripken or “Ironman” as Miami’s long snapper, starting every single game in his NFL career. In 224 consecutive games, Denney was slinging it to the holders.

Denney retired in 2018, as a new coaching staff entered, which would have been his sixth coach as a professional. He’s a Miami legend, as he set the standard for consistency.

Following Denney, enters Taybor Pepper, a true long snapper, who takes pride in his craft and his social media account. An instant fan-favorite to the Dolphins faithful, Pepper was a bright spot in a rebuilding year that had spurts of fun football after a brutal first half of the 2019 campaign.

Pepper would find his way to the San Francisco 49ers where he’s played the last two seasons.

Pepper was appreciated, and with his exit, the door opened for Miami to do something rarely seen in the NFL. At the 2020 NFL draft, the Dolphins spent their sixth-round pick (No. 185) on LSU Tiger Blake Ferguson.

Ferguson has played in all 33 games during his professional career and has mastered the art of long snapping. You could say it’s in his DNA, as his brother, Reid, handles the same duties for the Buffalo Bills.

That’s actually the truth. The Fergusons’ father raised his sons with the intention of doing what they each do so well. Not only do they snap, they also podcast about it as well, and it’s a must-listen.

Perhaps the most important and impressive parts of Blake’s career is his philanthropy and influence related to type-1 diabetes. Ferguson is not only afflicted with the disease, but he’s also an ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The 24-year-old is known to have a keen eye on social media, even jumping into threads and offering signed jerseys and numerous endeavors that make him a perfect fit in Miami, as the Dolphins are known to be one of the most charitable and philanthropic franchises in sports.

A national champion at LSU, Ferguson knows how to win both on and off the field, and he sure knows how to snap. It’s the hope of many, he challenges Denney’s streak and helps end diabetes.

You can help Ferguson by supporting his cause at JDRF.org.

2022 Free Agency: Cowboys resign LS Jake McQuaide on 1-year deal

The Cowboys made a signing on the first day of free agency, bringing back long snapper Jake McQuaide on a one-year deal. | From @CDBurnett7

With all of the players the Dallas Cowboys are shipping out, a quiet free agency was expected. Shockingly, they’ve made a move on the first day of NFL free agency, albeit a simple one. Long snapper Jake McQuaide is coming back to Dallas after his first year with the team.

McQuaide’s arrival to Dallas followed the retirement of longtime starter L.P. Ladouceur. McQuaide is a two-time Pro Bowler in 2016-17 and was coached by John Fassel when both were with the Los Angeles Rams.

The connection of McQuaide and Fassel brought him to the Cowboys, similar to the signing of kicker Greg Zuerlein. The special teams unit flourished in 2021 and McQuaide started in every game for Dallas.

Even after the strong year from the unit, McQuaide is the only to return. Zuerlein and punter Bryan Anger aren’t expected to return to the Cowboys so McQuaide will be snapping to new faces in 2022 under his new veteran-minimum contract.

McQuaide is eligible to sign his contract on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Texasn re-sign Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Weeks

The Houston Texans have re-signed Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Weeks.

When it works, why change?

According to Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Texans are re-signing Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Weeks to a 13th season.

Weeks has played the most games in Texans history with 193. Houston signed the former Baylor Bear in 2010, and he has not missed a game since Sept. 12, 2010.

After his collegiate career, Weeks had a tryout with the Detroit Lions in 2008 during rookie minicamp. However, he was not signed to the team. The former Glendale (Ariz.) Mountain Ridge product remained out of football for the 2008 and 2009 seasons before getting another shot with the Texans ahead of their 2010 rookie minicamp.

In 2015, Weeks made the Pro Bowl after the Texans’ 9-7 season that resulted in the club’s third AFC South title.

Weeks turned 36 years old on Feb. 17, and has 26 combined tackles for his career with one fumble recovery.

Alabama signs talented long snapper Alex Rozier

Alabama makes another addition to the class of 2022

Just when you thought Nick Saban and Alabama were done with the class of 2022, the head coach pulls off another addition. This time it was a talented Mississippi long snapper, Alex Rozier.

Rozier is a talented long snapping prospect that stands at 6’3″, 210 pounds, and recorded an impressive 4.78 in the 40-yard dash according to his profile on Kohl’s Professional Camps.

Rozier’s signature will most likely complete the class of 2022 for Saban and the Crimson Tide which currently sits at No. 2 in the nation behind fellow SEC program Texas A&M.

Raiders sign free agent LS Carson Tinker with Trent Sieg on reserve/COVID-19 list

Raiders sign free agent LS Carson Tinker with Trent Sieg on reserve/COVID-19 list

Suddenly, among all the other roster shuffling that must happen for various reasons, the Raiders also needed to sign a long snapper this week. That’s because usual long snapper Trent Sieg was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, making his status uncertain for the team’s game against Washington on Sunday.

The new long snapper is former Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker turned long snapper Carson Tinker.

“We had a couple options, a couple different guys, and he played recently, played in over 70 games,” Raiders Interim head coach Rich Bisaccia said of Tinker. “He’s got a lot of experience and I think he played as recently as three weeks ago, so we’re fortunate we can get him in here. He passed all the protocol and he had a good day today and he’ll be a little bit better tomorrow. So, we’re glad to have him right now.”

Tinker was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just a couple weeks ago. Prior to that he spent six years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has appeared in 77 career games.

And as it happened, the last game Tinker played with the Bucs came against this same Washington team back on November 14.

Notre Dame long-snapper announces new NIL deal

What is your go-to milk choice?

There have been so many players across the college sports landscape that have gotten deals from different businesses to endorse products and make some money this season.  It’s long overdue and while some are especially cashing in, it’s hard for me to believe many are making life changing money.

Although during my college years I would have considered even an extra 25 bucks a week to be life changing.

Notre Dame long snapper Michael Vinson is the latest Fighting Irish football player to announce an endorsement as he did so with American Dairy Association Indiana on Friday.  It’s a match made in heaven for a player that goes by the nickname “Milk“.

Vinson shared the following tweet to make the announcement:

Congratulations on the deal and I hope they supply your living quarters with all of the milk it can possibly drink.

Next time though it might be a good idea to throw a pair of shoes on before posing for the picture!

Packers making change at long snapper, swapping Hunter Bradley for Steve Wirtel

The Packers are making a chance at long snapper, per The Athletic. Steve Wirtel will replace Hunter Bradley. the team’s long snapper since 2018.

The Green Bay Packers are making a mid-season swap at long snapper.

According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers are releasing Hunter Bradley and replacing him with Steven Wirtel, who is currently on the team’s practice squad.

Bradley was a 2018 seventh-round pick of the Packers. This season was his fourth as the team’s long snapper, but inconsistency has defined his tenure.

The Packers signed Wirtel to the practice squad on Sept. 2. After seeing the battle play out between Bradley and Wirtel for two months, the Packers decided to make the change.

Wirtel spent time with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie out of Iowa State in 2020. He was with the Los Angeles Rams this past offseason, so he’ll have familiarity with Packers punter Corey Bojorquez.

Wirtel was the snapper at Iowa State for all four years, appearing in 51 games between 2016 and 2019. He was a finalist as a senior for the Patrick Mannelly Award, given to the nation’s best snapper, and was also invited to the 2019 Senior Bowl.

Bradley played in 56 games for the Packers. He was the 239th overall pick in the 2018 draft.

General manager Brian Gutekunst has parted ways with both specialist draft picks from the 2018 class, with Bradley joining punter JK Scott, a fifth-round pick.

Oklahoma Sooners’ Kasey Kelleher named to Patrick Mannelly Award watch list

Kasey Kelleher was named to the Patrick Mannelly Award watch list as one of college football’s best long snappers.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had one of the best kicking units in college football for what seems like the better part of a decade. Gabe Brkic and Austin Seibert might get all of the accolades, but as the Oklahoma Sooners Twitter account states, “every good kick starts with a good snap.”

To that end, Kasey Kelleher was named to the Patrick Mannelly Award watch list as one of college football’s best long snappers.

In only the third season of its existence, the award has been won by John Shannon of Notre Dame and Thomas Fletcher of Alabama.

Long snapper may not be a position the average college football fan thinks about much, but it is if you don’t have a good one. Kelleher has been a good one for the Oklahoma Sooners in his three seasons in Norman.

He’s been the long snapper for 39 games as part of an Oklahoma Sooners kicking game that has been one of the best in the country the last several seasons.

With Kelleher as the long snapper for the Oklahoma Sooners, the kicking game has made 87% of its field goals between Seibert and Brkic. Since 2018, the Sooners have missed one extra point in 189 attempts.

The long snapper is an underrated position because so much of what happens in the kicking game depends on the snap. If the snap is off even a little bit and it forces the holder to reach for the ball, it can throw off the whole operation of the kick.

Having a reliable and dependable long snapper is incredibly valuable to a team. Kasey Kelleher is as reliable and dependable as they come and will continue to play an important role for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2021.
