Former Penn State RB London Montgomery announces transfer commitment

Former Penn State running back London Montgomery has announced where he will continue his college football career.

Former Penn State running back [autotag]London Montgomery[/autotag] entered the transfer portal following the conclusion of Penn State spring football practices. Now, he has announced where the next step in his college football journey will be taking him.

Montgomery announced his commitment to East Carolina, of the American Athletic Conference, with a post on his Instagram account on Saturday.

Montgomery was a four-star recruit in Penn State’s Class of 2023, and he was one of the top players in Pennsylvania in the recruiting class. Montgomery called himself the baddest running back in the state and was expected to be a natural successor to the current duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. But now, Montgomery may get a crack at a more significant role running the football with the ECU Pirates.

East Carolina has the 112th-ranked rushing offense in 2023 with an average of 113 yards per game. The Pirates lost the team’s leading rusher from a year ago, Rahjai Harris, to a transfer to Baylor this offseason.

The Scranton native did not appear in any games for Penn State as a true freshman in 2023. He will have four years of eligibility to make use of with East Carolina beginning this fall.

Penn State safety King Mack to enter transfer portal along with three others

Former top recruit King Mack along with three other Nittany Lions enter the transfer portal

One of Penn State’s prized recruits from the Class of 2023 is entering the transfer portal. Safety [autotag]King Mack[/autotag], the no. 93 player in last year’s class, reposted a post on his Instagram account announcing his intent to transfer after it was reported earlier. Three other Nittany Lions have also entered the portal, per multiple reports.

Mack saw plenty of snaps in last month’s spring game and would have seen an increased role this fall after appearing in all 13 games last season.

In his brief one-year stint in Happy Valley, Mack compiled just three tackles in his limited snaps. After burning his redshirt last year, he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Others to enter the portal include running back [autotag]London Montgomery[/autotag], a standout during Penn State’s Blue-White game, offensive lineman Golden Israel-Achumba, and wide receiver [autotag]Malik McClain[/autotag].

The transfer portal officially closed on May 1, but due to paperwork being processed, not all transfers were reported until after the fact. We will now wait until Penn State moves to bring in players from the portal.

Top five true freshman running backs in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman running backs in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks #B1G

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year and is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed that the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle, and we already looked at the top quarterbacks in the class and I wanted to dive into the running back position next.

The following are the top five running backs recruits ranked by 247Sports heading to Big Ten schools this fall.

Penn State Class of 2023 snapshot: RB David Kency Jr.

Let’s take a quick profile look at Penn State preferred walk-on running back David Kency Jr.

The current running back situation at Penn State is full of potential. After a brilliant debut from [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag], two stars from the Class of 2022, the running game appears to be in great shape heading into the 2023 season. Despite losing Kaytron Allen to the transfer portal, Penn State’s depth at the running back position is boosted by the addition of [autotag]London Montgomery[/autotag] in the Class of 2023. But the Nittany Lions have also added a preferred walk-on from Louisiana with David Kercry Jr.

Kency didn’t garner much interest from schools across the country. But he ultimately made the decision to commit to James Franklin and the Nittany Lions.

Let’s take a more in-depth look at what running back David Kency Jr. brings to Penn State football.

Penn State’s 2023 football commitment tracker

The Penn State football Class of 2023 commitment tracker has been updated with the latest recruiting development

The Class of 2022 was great for Penn State, but it’s already time to turn the page toward the Class of 2023. And James Franklin and the Nittany Lions already had a few commitments on the board for the Class of 2023 as the signed letters of intent were coming in for the Class of 2022.

We’ll be keeping track of every commitment that goes on the board for Penn State in the Class of 2023. But knowing that odds are pretty good at least one player will have a change of heart somewhere along the recruiting process, we’ll keep tabs on what they are doing up until signing day.

This tracker will be updated accordingly when needed. It was last updated on February 1, 2023.

Penn State football locks in Class of 2023

Here is every player Penn State has announced in its Class of 2023.

Penn State’s start to the early signing period on Wednesday ended with the official signing of 22 members of its Class of 2023. The recruiting class is one balanced with offense and defense and will add some terrific quality and depth on the line of scrimmage a year after addressing some skill positions in the Class of 2022. And while the latest recruiting class didn’t necessarily go off without a mild bump in the road on the first day of the early signing period, it is getting head coach James Franklin excited about the program’s future.

Penn State made sure to sign some of the top players from in the state but also did some solid work beyond the state’s borders. This was especially true in Virginia as the Nittany Lions kicked the class off with the first commitment on the board from Virginia offensive lineman [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag] and continued to add help from the state right up until the final days of the recruiting efforts before the early signing period opened. In all, Penn State added players from nine different states ranging from Alabama to New York.

Here is the full rundown of the confirmed additions to the Penn State program in the Class of 2023.

How are the Penn State recruits doing in their senior seasons?

This week, let’s check back in with some key 2023 recruits and how their senior seasons have been thus far.

Penn State is coming off a blowout win against Auburn. Not only that, but the Nittany Lions have had quite a few talented players on their radar for future recruiting classes.

We know all about the current Penn State roster and we took a thorough look at the 2022 recruits over the summer. But, what about the future Nittany Lions?

Last week, we took a look at some key recruits who have Penn State on their radar. There were some that even had them narrowed down into a final 10 to 12 teams. But there were others that were pretty far out in their recruiting process but still definitely worth keeping an eye on.

It’s worth noting that running back [autotag]London Montgomery[/autotag] is sitting out for the season due to a season-ending injury. Montgomery was a big get for Penn State’s recruiting class in 2023.

This week, let’s check back in with some key 2023 recruits and how their senior seasons have been thus far.

Penn State commit London Montgomery: I’m the baddest running back in the state

This Penn State Class of 2023 says he is the baddest running back in the state.

Penn State seems to have developed a knack for keeping some of the top running back recruits in the state close to home. Following in the footsteps of Saquon Barkley, Miles Sanders, and now Nick Singleton, one of the future running backs coming through the pipeline is already feeling motivated to let the world know he’s next.

London Montgomery committed to Penn State in mid-July. He did so as the state’s top-rated running back who is well aware of the history and tradition Penn Stae has with in-state running backs that came before him. The Scranton native knows he has a lot to offer the Nittany Lions program though and he is seemingly perfectly content to make a name for himself in his final year of high school football.

“I’m not sure why (the national attention hasn’t come), but that’s OK,” Montgomery said in a featured story by the York Daily Record’s Frank Bodani. “I like to be the underdog, I like to work harder.”

Montgomery will join Penn State in the Class of 2023. The recruiting class is currently ranked in the top 10 nationally according to 247Sports, and Penn State is on track to secure its first back-to-back top 10 recruiting classes in the era of recruiting rankings. The addition of Montgomery helped that cause, as Penn State continues to rank second in the Big Ten recruiting rankings behind only Ohio State, and the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions appear to be separating themselves from the Big Ten pack.

While James Franklin and his staff hope to keep things going to solidify the recruiting class, Montgomery is letting everyone know he is not about to let up either.

“I’m not going to take my foot off the gas pedal because it’s my senior year,” Montgomery said, looking forward to the upcoming season. “I want people to know who I am. I’m the baddest running back in the state.”
