2023 Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 26 Cam Wallace

Snapshot profile of Penn State freshman RB Cam Wallace, who could be used on special teams.

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Joining the program this year is freshman running back [autotag]Cam Wallace[/autotag], a Class of 2023 recruit out of the state of Georgia. Wallace joins a program that is in a healthy spot with running back options, which means he could be given some time to develop a bit before being asked to help out on offense. In the meantime, don’t be shocked if Wallace gets some looks on special teams. Here is a quick overview of one of Penn State’s newest players.

What jersey numbers will Penn State’s latest additions be wearing this season? Here are the updated football jersey numbers.

Now those new members of the Penn State family have confirmed jersey numbers for the 2023 season.

Penn State lands Minnesota RB transfer Trey Potts

Penn State added a veteran Big Ten running back from the transfer portal

As if the running back room at Penn State wasn’t already in a good place before, it got a whole lot better on Wednesday. Former Minnesota running back [autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag] announced that he will be transferring to Penn State for the 2023-24 season.

After the breakout seasons from freshmen [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag], the position is definitely in a good spot. The two combined for over 1,800 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. However, despite the success of the underclassmen, the depth behind them was thin. Freshman [autotag]Cam Wallace[/autotag] was slated to be the third running and doesn’t appear to be physically ready for Big Ten football yet.

Landing Potts might have been more important than most thought going into this offseason.

Potts is a former three-star running back who racked up 1,195 yards and 11 touchdowns in 24 career games while at Minnesota. It looked like he was on his way to a breakout season in 2021 when he had 552 yards and six touchdowns in five games. However, he suffered through some scary injuries that season and missed the second half of the year.

Potts is a Pennsylvania native from Williamsport and decided to transfer back home.

It’s not likely that he will challenge Singleton or Allen for the majority of the workload, but he’ll add much needed depth to the running back room. It’s predicted that his role will mainly be as a third down back.

Adding experienced depth to an underclassmen filled position is a big positive for Penn State. There are high expectations for the Nittany Lions this season after their Rose Bowl victory. The more playmakers that are in the program, the more successful of a season they can have.

Let’s hope Potts can stay healthy and be an impact player that he was expected to be his later seasons at Minnesota.

Penn State football locks in Class of 2023

Here is every player Penn State has announced in its Class of 2023.

Penn State’s start to the early signing period on Wednesday ended with the official signing of 22 members of its Class of 2023. The recruiting class is one balanced with offense and defense and will add some terrific quality and depth on the line of scrimmage a year after addressing some skill positions in the Class of 2022. And while the latest recruiting class didn’t necessarily go off without a mild bump in the road on the first day of the early signing period, it is getting head coach James Franklin excited about the program’s future.

Penn State made sure to sign some of the top players from in the state but also did some solid work beyond the state’s borders. This was especially true in Virginia as the Nittany Lions kicked the class off with the first commitment on the board from Virginia offensive lineman [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag] and continued to add help from the state right up until the final days of the recruiting efforts before the early signing period opened. In all, Penn State added players from nine different states ranging from Alabama to New York.

Here is the full rundown of the confirmed additions to the Penn State program in the Class of 2023.
