Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Ewers decommits, Herman out?’

With Quinn Ewers being the latest prospect to decommit, Locked on Longhorns Podcast dives into the root of the problem. Is it Tom Herman?

It has been a wild 24 hours in Austin for the Texas Longhorns football team. It all started with rumblings of the top 2022 recruit having second thoughts about his decision to commit to the University of Texas. That was followed shortly by Quinn Ewers announcing that he would be looking elsewhere. So where do we start as we unpack the situation? The Longhorns have seen a mass exodus as of late in terms of recruits deciding to play elsewhere and players leaving through the transfer portal.

Does this fall on the teams lack of execution? Does this fall on the offenses struggles in big games? Does this fall on the team’s performances as a whole? Or does this fall directly at the feet of Tom Herman? One could make a case for all of the above but that all stems from the head coach. When things don’t go well it begins and ends with him. We discuss the fall out of losing out on yet another Texas product heading to another state to play his collegiate football career.

The issues and frustrations with the current head coach go far beyond just recruiting. The product on the field is a big issue. The fact that ever since that 2018 season where Sam Ehlinger proclaimed that Texas was back, they have been anything but back. They are just 11-7 in the 18 games following that proclamation. Plus a look forward at the top 10 matchup with Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: Five areas of improvement

The latest Locked on Longhorns Podcast discussing the optics of the head coach, men’s basketball and five areas to improve.

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast kicks off discussing the perception of Tom Herman. Given some of the comments from his recent press conferences, what do the optics look like for the Texas head coach? As they say perception is reality. Can the team quiet the noise given all the rumors floating around about who could be the next head coach at Texas? Patrick also discusses if Tom Herman’s job is on the line in 2020.

The men’s basketball team is only 34 days from returning to the hardwood. Can Shaka Smart lead his team to a win over a top Southeastern Conference foe? This will be a good challenge for this team. Given the entire team returns in 2020-2021, are they one of the top talented teams in the Big 12 Conference? How much will Greg Brown’s addition help this team?

In the final segment, it is all about the football team. What are the five areas for improvement on offense for the Longhorns? Sam Ehlinger is going to need to play better but he isn’t the only one. Despite some his poor performances as of late, Ehlinger has been the savior for the team. His miraculous comeback efforts have forced two overtime games. The team around him needs to step up and help the senior quarterback and not rely on Ehlinger to play hero ball.

Jordan Whittington is on the injury report once again after an abdominal injury surfaced following the Red River Showdown with Oklahoma last Saturday. With Whittington now down for the foreseeable future, what does the slot receiver position look like? Jake Smith reagravated his hamstring injury during warmups, so what could his status be for the  Baylor game?

On the topic of Baylor, we discussed the optics looking bad after the Bears hosted a homecoming event at their stadium. With the team under quarantine and football activities halted due to 42 positive COVID-19 cases, it doesn’t look good. Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Sam Ehlinger’s last Red River Rivalry?’

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast breaks down Sam Ehlinger as he heads into what could be his final Texas-Oklahoma weekend matchup.

[jwplayer AntuLo7G]

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast kicks off the show with a discussion on Sam Ehlinger. Will this in fact be his last Texas-OU weekend matchup? Head coach Tom Herman jokingly stated “who said?” That was in response to a question about Ehlinger going into the final Red River Shootout game at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. With the NCAA’s rule on college eligibility this year, seniors such as Ehlinger would have the opportunity to come back.

On Sunday’s practice the captain spoke about being disciplined and taking accountability to his team. Ehlinger obviously wants to win so what will it take for the Longhorns to get back on track on Saturday? Baker Mayfield decided to fire a shot regarding the rivalry, will there be any Longhorns who will chime in?

In the second segment the discusses switches to which Longhorns need to step up on Saturday. On offense it feels like it needs to be running backs and the wide receivers. Jake Smith returned to lead the team in receptions but if felt like it left some on the table. On the defensive side of the ball it falls on the pass rush and the linebackers. Texas is missing way too many tackles and it starts with the front seven defenders. Who are the dark horses who step up on Saturday?

With the Sooners on tap on Saturday, who will be the key matchups to watch? Oklahoma has a talented receiver in Charleston Rambo, which cornerback will need a big game to slow him down. Plus can Keondre Coburn win inside against Creed Humphrey? Plus Patrick and Cami lay out just how Texas wins this game against the rivals north of the river.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Which state is better?’

The Wednesday Locked on Longhorns Podcast discusses which state is better? Plus we discuss if this is a must win game.

As the Red River Rivalry/Red River Shootout/Red River Showdown approaches, the trash talk has begun. Former Sooner and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was the first to fire a shot ahead of the game. On a Wednesday edition Patrick and Cami discuss just which state is better between Texas and Oklahoma. They lay out all the reasons that Texas is indeed better. Plus what is the favorite parts of Texas-Oklahoma game in Dallas, Texas.

Cami discusses on what is going on with Tom Herman, is he broken? With all of the issues with the Texas Longhorns through two conference games, how much longer does Herman have in Austin. The football team looks undisciplined and that falls at the feet of the head coach. The Longhorns have had a history under him of losing games against unranked opponents. TCU head coach Gary Patterson comments following the game on the Big 12 and the national perception. Plus who could be the next head coach if the Longhorns part ways with Herman.

Did we buy into the hype? After relieving the coordinators last year before the bowl game, the Longhorns went out and beat Utah. Did that game give people the illusion that this team would be much better in 2020? What are the chances for the Longhorns to run the table? Can they creep into the College Football Playoffs? Can they win the Big 12 Championship for the first time in over a decade?
