Unpacking Future Packers: No. 11, Georgia OT Broderick Jones

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

Brian Gutekunst has selected three Georgia Bulldogs in the first round over the past two years. Green Bay’s general manager selected cornerback Eric Stokes with the 29th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and followed that up by selecting Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

This year, Gutekunst could switch to the offensive side of the ball and select Broderick Jones with the 15th overall pick. The Georgia offensive tackle checks in at No. 11 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

Jones, a five-star recruit out of Lithonia High School in Georgia, finished his career at Athens with 19 career starts, with 15 starts coming at left tackle this past season.

“Jones’ nastiness and toughness are his greatest strength,” Shane Hallam, the managing partner of Draft Countdown said. “He will knock guys out, become a lead blocker and pop at the line of scrimmage.”

Jones looks every bit the part of a franchise left tackle. He checks in at 6-5, 311 pounds with (34-plus inch arms). He’s the No. 5 offensive tackle on PFF’s big board. From PFF:

“Jones is a bully of an offensive tackle. You’re not going through him, you’ll have to go around. He earned an 84.1 pass-blocking grade in his first full season starting at left tackle for the Bulldogs.”

Jones is an excellent athlete and can get out in space and move people. His 4.97 40-yard dash was the fastest among all offensive lineman at the scouting combine.

Once Jones gets out in space he hits his marks. He’s powerful at the point of contact and drives people downfield. He plays with a bit of an edge as a run blocker. He stays balanced through contact. He’s a people mover and would help improve any team’s rushing attack.

“He is a solid run blocker due to his tenacity,” Hallam said. “He doesn’t quite get the leverage you want consistently, which could create some run blocking problems in the NFL.”

The first-year starter at left tackle has the quick feet to protect the corner in pass protection. He has good length and powerful hands. He has lower body flexibility with good knee bend.  According to Pro Football Focus, Jones has given up zero sacks and just nine pressures in 439 pass-blocking reps.

While he was dominant for the Bulldogs this past season, Jones’ technique in pass protection will need polishing and could be a candidate to redshirt his first year in the league to work out the kinks.

Jones won’t let defenders disengage when he gets a hold of them,” Hallam said. “Good use of his hands and feet to stay balanced and make defenders fight leads to longer block times. Thus, no sacks.”

Fit with the Packers

The Packers don’t have an immediate need at offensive tackle. David Bakhtiari is penciled in as the team’s starting left tackle. Yosh Nijman figures to be the team’s starting right tackle, but will face stiff competition from Zach Tom, who proved capable of playing tackle during his rookie season. Elgton Jenkins can kick back outside in a pinch. On top of that, the Packers have  plenty of depth at the position with Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones.

A year from now that room could look drastically different. Will Nijman be on the roster? Will Bakhtiari finish his career in Green Bay?

In the short-term, the Packers are golden at the second most important position in football. The long-term outlook is murky, which is why the Packers selecting an offensive tackle in the first round for the first time since 2011 is very much in play.

Jones checks all the boxes and might have the highest ceiling of any offensive lineman in this class.

“I’d draft Jones at the back end of the Top 10,” Hallam said. “I think he gives you a rock-solid left tackle for years to come.”

Jones plays a premium position. He’s athletic and he’ll turn 22 in May. Add it all up and Jones is possibly sitting atop Green Bay’s big board.

With Bakhtiari, Nijman, and Tom in front of him, Jones would likely redshirt his first season if he were to land with the Packers and then become a starter in 2024.

If the Georgia product is still on the board when the Packers are on the clock with the 15th overall pick, the Packers could have their future left tackle.

Proposed DeAndre Hopkins trade to Giants very intriguing

If the Cardinals could end up with an extra first-round pick in a Hopkins trade, it would be amazing.

The Arizona Cardinals would like to trade wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. They are reportedly seeking a Day 2 pick and more in exchange for the three-time All-Pro.

However, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposes a trade that is super intriguing and the Cardinals would get a first-round pick.

The deal is this:

  • The Cardinals send Hopkins and pick No. 34 (Round 2) to the New York Giants.
  • The Giants send pick No. 25 (Round 1) and pick No. 128 (Round 4)

The Giants get a big-time receiver. The Cardinals shed themselves of the contract.

They also pick up a fourth-round pick and move up nine spots in the draft, giving them two first-round picks.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

At pick No. 25, they could be in position to select a receiver like TCU’s Quentin Johnston or be able to grab Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz.

If they were to also trade back from the third overall pick and pick up a second-round pick, they would still end up with three Day 2 picks in addition to their two picks in Round 1.

Have the Giants inquired about a trade? That’s the part we don’t know.

But this is a deal the Cardinals should definitely make if it is possible.

Bills LB Von Miller says DeAndre Hopkins wants to play for Bills

Miller works out with Hopkins in the offseason and told reporters Hopkins told him he wants to play for the Bills.

The Arizona Cardinals have not yet traded wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, although that is expected to happen at some point between now and the conclusion of the NFL draft next week.

He would like to play somewhere he can win and the Cardinals would like to get his contract off the books.

We know, based on his body language in an interview with Bryant McFadden that he is intrigued with the thought of being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs or Buffalo Bills.

Apparently, Hopkins himself has told people he wants to play for the Bills.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Bills linebacker Von Miller, speaking to reporters this week via video conference, said as much.

“I talk to Hop all the time,” he told reporters. “It’s kind of like the same thing with OBJ (Odell Beckham), you just never know until you know. Hop said he wanted to be Buffalo Bill–And you just never know until you get that DeAndre Hopkins signature on a contract.

“I’m not sure of what circumstances are or what’s going on with that. I would love to see DeAndre Hopkins be here. I would love to have his skill set on our offense.”

Miller works out with Hopkins in the offseason in Texas.

The Bills have picks in the second and third round, which are roughly the range the Cardinals are looking to get in a trade.

Keep an eye on the Bills. Hopkins wants to go there. The Bills could use another receiver for QB Josh Allen.

If a deal happens, it will likely occur during the draft.

Jets re-sign OT Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi is back

The Jets re-signed offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, the team announced Tuesday.

Ogbuehi started five games last season at right tackle and played in seven games total. He’ll be entering his ninth NFL season and second with the Jets. Ogbuehi was drafted in the first round, No. 21 overall, by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015 and played four seasons there. He has also spent time with the Jaguars, Ravens and Seahawks.

Ogbuehi will add depth to the offensive line group but the position is still very much in play for the No. 13 pick in the draft.

Ohio State OT Paris Johnson had official visit with Cardinals

Johnson is one of the draft’s top offensive line prospects. The Cardinals could viably draft him in the top ten, even with a trade.

The Arizona Cardinals have the third overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft at the end of the month. They have been meeting with many of the top prospects at many positions, as they might use the third pick and might trade back.

One such top prospect is Ohio State tackle Paris Johnson. Johnson, considered by some to be the best offensive lineman in the draft class, had an official visit with the Cardinals last week, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Johnson was the Buckeye’s starting left tackle last season and starting right guard in 2021.

He is 6-6 and 313 lbs with good strength and athleticism.

He is projected to go somewhere in the top half of the first round and could be drafted in the top 10.

Cardinals set to host athletic Georgia pass rusher

The Cardinals will meet Georgia edge defender Nolan Smith this week in Arizona.

Nolan Smith is a lean, athletic defender who played for Georgia and has the potential to be a good pass rusher in the NFL.

The Arizona Cardinals are set to bring him in for an official top-30 visit, according to Aaron Wilson.

His draft projections range from as high as the top 15 to in the second round.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

He is 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds but has a long 81-inch wingspan.

He never had more than 4.5 sacks in any season, but his 4.39-second 40 time and 41-inch vertical are intriguing at the next level.

In 2022, he played in only eight games, totaling 18 tackles, three sacks and seven tackles for loss.

He is lean but long and athletic.

He could be in play for the Cardinals in the second round or he could be a target if they trade down from the third pick, depending on how far back they go.

Will you be able to watch Cowboys’ home-away-from-home road trip?

Packed with game information including referee assignment, broadcast team, wager info, coverage maps, local and satellite radio stations and most importantly, a few options if you can’t watch the game on TV.

Times are different in 2020.

Normally, whenever the Dallas Cowboys go wheels up for a trip to Maryland to face the Washington football franchise, they prepare to play a home game on road soil. Because of the proliferation of Cowboys fans that reside in the Washington, DC region, and because the home team is normally bad and rarely gives their home fans a reason to pay to see them, games at Fed Ex Field normally have more Cowboys fans in attendance than any other road venue.

Honestly, they normally outnumber fans of the home team. That won’t be the case thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. No fans in the stands for this one. Also, the game will only be broadcast to parts of the country. If you’re in need of help, we got you fam.
