Future star? UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet would work well with Cowboys

The Michigan transfer turned into a bell cow for the Bruins and he could be the perfect pairing in the Dallas backfield. Here’s what the numbers and evaluations say. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Cowboys being in need of a running back is no secret. Ezekiel Elliott was the face of the franchise for the last seven seasons. They lost a brand ambassador and a key cog in the offense. Although his total touches were down to 234 in 2022, Elliott still led the club in that department. There’s a ton to replace and no reason to believe Dallas has faith in Tony Pollard absorbing a huge piece of that work without concern for the ramifications to his elite efficiency.

Looking over the landscape, and it appears one of the best candidates for the job is UCLA’s Zach Charbonnet. and it’s because his film has a familiar feel to it.

A 2022 highlight reel video planted the seed in less than two minutes; his style resembles DeMarco Murray.

Plugging Charbonnet and Murray into the Relative Athletic Score comparison tool… boom. Next, the pro comparison made by Player Profiler was… DeMarco Murray.  Searches for mentions of Charbonnet among Cowboys outlets turned up Law Nation’s breakdown where he compares Charbonnet to, that’s right, Murray.

Murray was an immediate contributor to Dallas’ offense in 2011 with 5.5 yards a carry and 7 yards a reception, and as part of a carry share with a speedy, shifty Felix Jones. If Dallas got that kind of production out of Charbonnet by pairing him with Tony Pollard, he’d make an excellent Day 2 selection.

WATCH: Highlights from Wisconsin’s ‘launch event’

Wisconsin football held their version of a spring game/practice on Saturday as the Badgers welcomed fans in to watch the offense and defense battle it out at Camp Randall.

Even with a little bit of snow, the Badgers got after it during an event they called “the launch.” It was indeed the launch of the Luke Fickell era in Madison, as Saturday was the first time fans got to see the new-look Badgers in action.

Wisconsin’s version of a red/white spring game was dominated by the defense, as cornerback Ricardo Hallman picked off new first-team quarterback Tanner Mordecai twice during live action. Check out highlights from Wisconsin’s day:

A Badger lands in the first round of CBS Sports’ mock draft

A Badger lands in the first round of CBS Sports’ mock draft

While it still feels like a long shot that a Badger will be off the board in the first round of the NFL draft next week, one CBS Sports draft analyst has a Wisconsin player in the tail end of his first 31 picks.

CBS Sports NFL draft writer Josh Edwards has Keeanu Benton going at No. 30 overall to the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the first round.

Benton not only made a strong case for himself at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, but is also at a position in defensive tackle that lacks depth in the 2023 class.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Benton also recently made The Athletic’s Top 100 list of prospects, coming at No. 56 overall the No. 6 overall defensive tackle. According to many scouts, Benton projects as one of the few three-down defensive tackles on the board in 2023.

Colts hammer offense in latest 3-round mock draft

A QB, WR and TE for the Colts in Touchdown Wire’s latest mock.

The Indianapolis Colts will be looking to improve the offensive side of the ball when the 2023 NFL draft comes around in less than a week.

In Touchdown Wire’s latest three-round mock draft, that’s exactly what they focused on. Though passing on the cornerback position will be a risky move, it’s hard to be totally upset with how the Colts came out in this mock draft from Doug Farrar.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

It started with Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud falling to the Colts at No. 4 overall.

Given new Colts head coach Shane Steichen’s history as Philly’s offensive coordinator, there’s a legitimate thought that Indy could be in play for Anthony Richardson or Will Levis so that Steichen could run the quarterback run-based offense he ran with Jalen Hurts, and to great effect — certainly with Richardson. But Steichen also has a history with Philip Rivers, and he still values the more “traditional” quarterback attributes just as much. Nobody in this class has better ball placement than Stroud, he’s more functionally mobile than people have thought, and he comes into the league able to run an NFL offense right away. I have compared Stroud to a more mobile Philip Rivers, so there you go.

Stroud falling to No. 4 would be a dream for the Colts. It may happen as Will Levis is moving up the boards in eyes of the betting market, but who knows what the board will look like when the event actually takes place.

At No. 35 overall, the Colts added a premier weapon in terms of explosiveness and playmaking ability at the wide receiver position in Marvin Mims Jr. out of Oklahoma.

Mims Jr. is a shifty slot receiver who has elite track speed and can be a vertical threat in Shane Steichen’s offense. He would immediately compete for a starting role as the slot receiver.

Rounding out the three-round mock is a bit of a surprise selection but one that definitely would have its intrigue. At No. 79 overall in this mock, the Colts took tight end Darnell Washington out of Georgia.

Having two of the most athletic tight ends to ever come out of the combine would be intriguing with Washington and Jelani Woods. Known more for his run blocking, Washington has upside as a receiver and red-zone target considering his size, length and elite athleticism.

Dolphins nab two offensive, two defensive players in seven-round mock draft

He has them attack two of their biggest needs first.

In just days, the Miami Dolphins will enter the league’s 2023 draft with the goal of improving their roster for not only this year but for the years beyond as well.

General manager Chris Grier only has four selections at this point for the second straight year, meaning he’ll have to be really confident in his selections if he wants to make the biggest impact.

NFL.com’s Chad Reuter recently published a seven-round mock draft where the Dolphins selected two offensive and two defensive players to address some of their needs.

Here’s who Reuter predicts Miami could select:

Wisconsin offers four-star running back from Florida

The Badgers offered Byron Louis, a four-star class of 2025 running back from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday.

The Badgers offered Byron Louis, a four-star running back from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday. The 5-foot-10, 180 pound athlete still has two more seasons of football at American Heritage before he’d potentially join a collegiate program as a member of their class of 2025.

Louis has now received 24 Division 1 offers, including programs like Georgia, Ohio State and USC. That being said, Wisconsin is known for producing star running backs like Jonathan Taylor, Melvin Gordon, Montee Ball and Ron Dayne amongst others.

Head coach Luke Fickell and offensive coordinator Phil Longo will look to improve upon the early success of current halfback Braelon Allen in 2023 and Louis could potentially be next up to be a star in the Badgers’ backfield.

Michigan football offers 2024 3-star RB from powerhouse West Coast high school

Interesting offer given the board. #GoBlue

There have been a lot of big-time players who have hailed from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman. Namely quarterbacks Tate Martell and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

The Wolverines already have one big-time running back committed in Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller four-star Jordan Marshall, who was atop rival Ohio State’s board, and have been hot and heavy in pursuit of Texas-based four-star Taylor Tatum — who has one Michigan football prediction via the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

But it appears Mike Hart is seeking more bodies in the offensive backfield. Taking to Twitter, it appears that Hart was intrigued by Bishop Gorman prospect, as he offered three-star tailback Micah Kaapana on Saturday.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Kaapana has offers from schools such as BYU and Utah and he’s listed at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds. He’s rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 612 player in the country, the 51st-ranked running back in 2024, and the third-best player in the state of Nevada.

Check out his highlights below.

Prescott to help scout Cowboys’ possible WR prospects: ‘May give them a call’

From @ToddBrock24f7: Dak says whether or not the club follows his advice on which receiver to take, he appreciates having input in the draft process.

Dak Prescott hit the runway Friday night at a special fundraiser in Dallas, but then he was set to hit the books, to tackle some homework for the Cowboys scouting department.

The quarterback served as honorary co-chair of the Children’s Cancer Fund “Light It Up” Gala along with franchise icon Troy Aikman; part of his duties including helping escort pediatric cancer patients down a supermodel catwalk for their paparazzi moment.

But then, he told reporters, he had some game film to watch as the Cowboys consider drafting a collegiate wide receiver later this week in the NFL draft.

“I’m going to do a little bit, like last year,” Prescott said, per the team website. “A couple of receivers, I have their tape; watch them, may give them a call. And maybe we take them, maybe we don’t. But it does feel good even to have an input and to know it is listened to.”

Prescott made pre-draft calls to a few prospects last year, too, including South Alabama receiver Jalen Tolbert. Dallas ended up selecting him in the third round.

It wasn’t a lengthy conversation, and Prescott didn’t tell the wideout that the Cowboys were taking him. But it did help convince both Prescott and the Dallas front office that they had identified someone who would fit well with what the offense is trying to do.

“We talked on the phone for about twenty minutes,” Tolbert said after being taken off the board last May, “and just talked about ball and relationship with quarterbacks and what I could bring to the table.”

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

And while Tolbert made very minor contributions on the field as a small-school rookie learning the NFL ropes, Prescott’s involvement- which was his idea- proved valuable enough to continue the practice in 2023.

“He reached out,” Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay explained last year, “and we said, ‘Hey, here’s some guys for you to do your thing with.’ Because we’re 50-plus years old here, and we have an impression and a feeling about him, and the guys that are in the locker room also pick up tendencies and things. It was important for a great person like him to reach out to these guys and give us some feedback.”

The chemistry and rapport he has with his pass-catchers is something Prescott takes seriously. He routinely invites receivers, backs, and tight ends to his backyard practice field for extra reps to work on timing. And he had CeeDee Lamb’s locker moved next to his own last summer for more immediate and regular communication.

And sometimes, he just picks up the phone before putting in a good word with his Cowboys coaches.

So a word of advice to this year’s crop of wide receivers, from early-round candidates like Zay Flowers, Jalin Hyatt, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba to local standouts like Quentin Johnson and Rashee Rice to likely Day 3 prospects such as Charlie Jones, Rakim Jarrett, and Mitchell Tinsley…

Keep your phone within reach this week. It may your new quarterback calling.

Michigan football offers unranked 2024 DT with big SEC offers

Unranked but with a Georgia offer? OK, then. #GoBlue

Perhaps it’s a trend.

Michigan football offered one unranked 2024 defensive tackle with an Ohio State offer over the weekend, and another has emerged with an offer to play college football in Ann Arbor who is equally unranked, with equally as impressive offers.

Despite having offers from Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, Durham (N.C.) defensive lineman Nnamdi Ogboko appears to be flying under the radar. 247Sports has him unranked despite being a 2024 prospect who plays in a talent-rich area. And it appears that Michigan football is diving into what’s becoming increasingly deep waters for the unheralded recruit, as Ogboko announced he now has an offer to play in The Big House.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Ogboko is listed at 6-foot-5, 320-pounds and the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has a 56% chance that he’ll end up in Athens. But, given his recent Michigan offer, we’ll see if that changes things any time soon.

WATCH: Look back at rookie season of Johnny Davis

Johnny Davis just wrapped up his rookie season with the Washington Wizards, averaging 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.

Johnny Davis just wrapped up his rookie season with the Washington Wizards, averaging 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. Those numbers don’t really speak to how he finished the season though.

Over the last eight games of the season, Davis averaged an impressive 14.6 points per game while compiling 5.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.8 blocks over 32.6 minutes per contest.

With the rookie having to navigate the birth of his first child and the start of his professional career, it did take him a little while to click in the league, let alone the fact that he had a lower-body injury early in the campaign.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Moving forward, Davis should see an expanded role in 2023-2024 and with a roster that also includes Bradley Beal, Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma, Washington will look to make the playoffs next season.
